We're Not Doctors But We Play Patients IRL

from Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl · host Jeannine Luby

What are the symptoms? A little burning during urination and the haunting memories of lost love. To quote the patient, "I burned for her, much like the burning during urination that I would experience soon afterwards." Any diehard Seinfeld fan will tell you that line above was delivered by Kramer in the 16th episode of the ninth and final season. The episode was aptly titled, "The Burning." While I haven't done anything like Kramer, such as lighting a cigarette and delivering such dramatic and poetic words, I have been what's called a Standardized Patient at the medical college in Scranton for nearly 13 years...a role that helps real medical students learn how to examine and interact with patients before they enter a real patient setting...and I have sat for eleven pelvic exams in one morning!!! Yes, you read that correctly!!! This week I speak with Katie Culligan, a fellow standardized patient who has been doing her work in the Washington, D.C. area for several years and loves it so much that she started the podcast, " The Standardized Patients Podcast," which is available on Apple and Spotify. And follow the account on Instagram! Katie and I talk about our experiences in this role and our thoughts on various aspects of health and wellness. Oh, and I share a bit about those 11 pelvic exams. This is Part 1 of the 2-part conversation. We had so much fun that we went a bit long and I wanted to share everything with you. So be sure to tune in next week to hear the rest of our conversation in which we discuss the impact of the pandemic on our work and more.
