West Point Fired its Only Climate Scientist for Refusing to Lie to Cadets

West Point just fired the only climate scientist on its faculty because he refused to lie to cadets.Adam Kalkstein is a civilian professor in West Point’s geography department, which is where the climatology course lives. Seventeen years teaching future Army officers, outstanding reviews. He sued Monday in federal court. And the way they got him is a masterpiece of paperwork.Start with May of last year. His department head, Colonel Mark Read, tells him his tenured position is being cut in a reduction in force. Two civilians got cut in the whole thing. One taught climate. The other taught bias. What a coincidence. Meanwhile the academy was opening a humanities center and announcing it needed more geographers. Colonel Read swore this had nothing to do with climate change. Purely a staffing decision. Because the staffing crisis at West Point was that they had too many geographers and not enough geographers.Then comes the offer. He can stay as a term employee, paid out of his own grant money, if he signs away his tenure. He took it because he had no options. Nothing coercive about handing a man his own paycheck back in exchange for the only job protection he had.Now the gag. September, emergency meeting, geography faculty are told to strip all mention of human causes of climate change from their courses. And the warning attached is that if anybody talks to the press or to politicians, the entire department would likely be dissolved. That’s not a curriculum decision. That’s a hostage note with a syllabus attached.And look at what they threatened to dissolve. Geography. At West Point. The Army has been reading terrain since before it had trucks. They were ready to shut down the map people to keep one guy quiet about the weather.November fifth. The dean, Brigadier General Shane Reeves, meets with the department, and one of Kalkstein’s colleagues presents a PowerPoint on how thoroughly everyone has complied. A slide deck. About obedience. At West Point, where the motto is Duty, Honor, Country. Two out of three, apparently. They kept Country.Kalkstein speaks up. He says, “we’re only telling cadets part of the story. We’re lying to them, deceiving them. It would be like trying to teach the law without being able to even mention the Constitution.” Reeves suggests he resign. Kalkstein says no. And the general gets up and walks out of the room. They teach composure under fire at that school.Six months later his contract isn’t renewed. The stated reason, and I want to be precise here, is poor character and temperament. The evidence for the poor character is the meeting where he objected to lying. They built a system where the only way to pass the honor check is to fail it.He wrote to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth about Arctic shipping lanes and melting sea ice. Not sure what he expected there. That’s like mailing a fire safety complaint to the arsonist.Oh, and Kalkstein is a conservative Republican. His own lawyer volunteered it. This is not a professor with a politics problem. This is an institution that decided reality is a political position.West Point’s response was that they are aware of the allegations and take such matters seriously. They’re aware. They’re the ones who did it. Awareness was never the problem here.
