What Educators Want You To Know

from A Monday Moment with Dr. Mal · host Dr. Mallory D. McCoy

In this episode of "A Monday Moment with Dr. Mal," I asked educators what they want others to know about education. Special guests Tara Haskins and Julian Johnson-Marshall, both experienced educators, share insights from the front lines of the school buildings in which they serve. From the importance of centering the experiences of Black women to the evolving demands of the profession, we explore the challenges educators face and how the community can work together to uplift schools, teachers, and students. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the education system from those who live it daily. Tara has spent the past 10 years of her career supporting the genius of Black and LatinX girls in education, and as a proud Hampton University graduate, she is an HBCU advocate who truly believes that representation not only matters but is essential to any community. She has supported girls by serving in two single-gender schools in both Houston, TX, and Kansas City, MO. During her time as a Dean of Restorative Justice, her implementation of school-wide restorative practices led to out-of-school suspensions decreasing by half in a single year. As the Founding School Leader of Kansas Citys first public single-gender school, the school was most recently recognized by the state of Missouri as a Top 5 school for academic growth and a Top 5 school for Black student growth in Kansas City. She currently serves as the Director of Academics for the SEED School of Los Angeles County and is the Founder and CEO of Honoring Her H.U.E., an organization that believes in the brilliance of black women in education. She is the first Black woman I had the pleasure to interview, and I was honored to have her! #iykyk Julian serves as an educator who was born, raised, and currently lives in Kansas City, Mo. He is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago and holds a Master of Arts in Education from Ottawa University. He currently serves as an English teacher and Head Boys Track & Field Coach at Grandview High School in Grandview, MO. Additionally, he is the Building Programs Coordinator for Brother Liberating Our Communities (B.L.O.C.), a Kansas City professional network of Black men working in education to uplift the local communities. As a licensed Baptist minister, he proudly serves his childhood church, Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. He is a committed (and PROUD) father to his daughter Shiloh. We had a beautiful conversation that you'll get to hear in its entirety if you stay tuned into my social media, but I had to cut it short. I can't wait to share snippets of the conversation you won't get to hear on THIS show, but you'll still get to hear a great conversation!
