Help is defined as assisting someone with resources in attempting to do something. Help requires submission. Needing help is not the same as asking for help. Because of the selfish characteristics associated with the disease of addiction, many times an individual in need of help is not ready to be helped. Assisting an addict often can be more destructive than constructive. Because of the manipulative nature of a person in active addiction, help is often felt as a right. This, however, is untrue and in fact, help is an act of compassion and love by the person offering the help. No one is mandated to offer help. This is especially true when help is not requested sincerely in submission. The one requesting help should be searching for a path to follow in their recovery journey. The question should always be Who is doing the work. We must be mindful that we are not GOD. We can only fix ourselves. By keeping the focus on ourselves and offering our life experience as what to and what not to do, we avoid the pitfall of overstepping our boundaries and steering someone onto what could be a destructive path for them. Listen as Trent espouses on what help looks like in recovery for him.
