What I Learned From My Marathon Bucket List with Charisse Walker

from Unbreakable Mompreneurs · host Charisse Walker

Hello, Unbreakable Mompreneurs! It’s Charisse Walker, and today I’m sharing a personal milestone that has shaped my mindset and strengthened my resolve in ways I never imagined—my marathon journey. This wasn’t just about running 26.2 miles; it was about proving to myself that I could accomplish something hard, something that tested my physical endurance, mental strength, and unbreakable spirit. As a real estate expert, lender, entrepreneur, coach, speaker, and author of Flipping the Iceberg, I juggle a lot. But this challenge was for me—a reminder that no matter how impossible something feels, with persistence and belief, it can be done. The Decision to RunA year ago, I set a goal: to run a marathon before turning 50. This wasn’t an easy decision—I had undergone multiple hip surgeries, dealt with chronic pain, and recovered from a hysterectomy that required six weeks of strict bed rest. But I was determined. So I started small—running for 30 seconds, walking for a minute and a half, and gradually increasing my endurance. Despite the setbacks, the injuries, and the challenges, I kept going.Overcoming SetbacksIn the months leading up to the race, my training hit a major roadblock. I suffered a stress fracture in my tibia, nearly breaking both legs. This put me out of training for three months. When I tried to start running again, the pain was unbearable. My physical therapist advised against training, saying, "Just go run it."I thought he was crazy. But deep down, I knew: I had to at least try.Race Day: A Battle of Strength and WillpowerI chose Big Cottonwood Marathon—one of the toughest courses, with steep downhill elevations that test even seasoned runners. The night before, I couldn’t find a decent place to sleep. My hotel bed was rock hard, and at the last minute, I switched to another hotel, getting barely any rest before waking up at 4 AM.At the starting line, I was unprepared. The most I had ever run in training was four miles—not exactly marathon-ready. On top of that, I lost my fuel packs (goo pouches) early on, meaning I had no proper fuel for nearly 11 miles. The first four miles felt great. But by mile 13, I hit the reality of my untrained body. Then came mile 18—the wall. My body started shutting down, and my mental battle began.By mile 20, I was completely drained. I called my husband, who brought emergency supplies, while my kids cheered from the car. They were my fuel.At mile 26, I dug deep, sprinting across the finish line. I did it.The Lesson: You Are UnbreakableThis race wasn’t about speed. It was about proving that I could push past limits, silence doubts, and finish what I started. Just like in business, motherhood, and life—when it gets hard, you don’t quit. You adjust, you push through, and you finish. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, questioning whether you should continue, remember: You are unbreakable. If you need help navigating life’s challenges, whether in real estate, business, or relationships, reach out. Let’s build your path forward together.📖 Check out my book, Flipping the Iceberg, and join my workshop on breaking through limitations and reclaiming your power.Visit My website: www.charissewalker.comNow go out and make it a great day! 🚀💪#unbreakablemompreneurs #charissewalker #goalsetting #goals #perseverance #bucketlist #bucketlistadventures #believeinyourself #believe
