What is Health?
from The Health and Sport Show
Welcome to the first episode of The Health and Sport Show with Tom Butterfield. Today Tom is going to discuss the concept of health and what that concept actually means to everyone. The dictionary definition is “the state of being free from illness or injury” but if we investigate further is the idea of health a more personal and complex one? KEY TAKEAWAYS Health is a sliding scale between the fit and healthy to sick and infirm. The WHO classify health as the following ; “Health is a state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Physical fitness is how efficiently our body systems work together to allow us to perform all our tasks of daily living. Our fitness levels are relative to our needs. When we are thinking about getting fitter we should think of the context of our health. We should be targeting our fitness requirements toward our personal circumstances. Mental health problems are often invisible and are often difficult to empathise with. This is hopefully improving in this area as a society. The road to good mental health can be complicated and varied. Define your idea of good health and what it means to you in relation to your lifestyle and your personal requirements. The concept of health is subjective. BEST MOMENTS ‘Does this mean that there is only healthy or unhealthy people in the world? Does this mean that a person with a slight cold is as unhealthy as person with hypertension, angina, insomnia a broken leg and a broken arm?’ ‘Are the need of a professional Tour de France cyclist the same as an office worker who cycles for fun at the weekend?’ ‘There are some really good wearable devices out there that can track all of these measurements and notify you of any changes.’ ‘We are finally waking up to the fact mental health is as important as physical health.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/ ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player.
