What is Incest??

from The Brain Love Podcast · host Dr. Delvena

Mrs. Deborah Ortiz joins me on the couch to talk about her own personal story - being the victim of incest. Can you guess who the perpetrator was? While fathers are reported to be the most common perpetrators of incest, according to a study published in 2014, any family members, including siblings, mothers, cousins, uncles, aunts, and other close relatives, can be a perpetrator, just as any person, of any gender, can be a victim. Incest is generally only brought up in “polite company” after watching Cersi and Jamie Lannister on Game of Thrones, but it’s time it was talked about as a fact of real life.  1 in 9 girls and the 1 in 53 boys that are sexually abused before they’re 18 years old — 80% of whom are sexually abused by a parent, according to RAINN. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. ARE YOU READY TO TAKE THE COUCH? You won't just hear Mrs. Ortiz share her story, but we also talk about healthy ways to cope and how/where to seek help.
