What is Incest??

Mrs. Deborah Ortiz joins me on the couch to talk about her own personal story - being the victim of incest. Can you guess who the perpetrator was? While fathers are reported to be the most common perpetrators of incest, according to a study published in 2014, any family members, including siblings, mothers, cousins, uncles, aunts, and other close relatives, can be a perpetrator, just as any person, of any gender, can be a victim. Incest is generally only brought up in “polite company” after watching Cersi and Jamie Lannister on Game of Thrones, but it’s time it was talked about as a fact of real life.  1 in 9 girls and the 1 in 53 boys that are sexually abused before they’re 18 years old — 80% of whom are sexually abused by a parent, according to RAINN. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense.
