"What is that you do, exactly?"

“What is it that you do, exactly?” is as familiar to me as sunshine. As “What’s that accent?” and the eyebrow raised while its owner determines the right combination of curiosity, admiration, and distrust my unusual person warrants. Hosting a gathering of seasoned change-makers at our San Francisco home on July 11 offered an opportunity to connect the dots in a recording.Growing up in the traumatically imploding Soviet Union, I committed to figuring out how we do change better; a commitment I have kept for over 20 years of research and practice across 5 continents by balancing the advancement of our collective understanding of change-making with paid consulting, speaking, and Board positions that pressure-test that understanding while paying my bills.I work to professionalize change-making in part because I have had to define this career path for myself and those needing to make sense how I fit into their universe. I professionalize change-making in hope that the next generation does not have to.
