What Is the Difference Between Living Together and Living in Unity? | ஒன்றாக வாழ்வதற்கும், ஒன்றுபட்டு வாழ்வதற்கும் என்ன வித்தியாசம்?
from Santhosam Podcast: Guiding Light of Spiritual Wisdom · host Santhosam
In the 26th Velvi discourse, Gurumahan explains the Pancha Yajnas, the five sacred duties of gratitude toward the Divine, sages, ancestors, humanity, and all living beings. The ancient wisdom teaches that there are five great duties in this Universe. Whatever we receive, we must learn to give back. This Universe has given us everything, and therefore, we have a responsibility to express our gratitude. The five elements have given us everything we need. From the Earth, we receive our food. We need water, sunlight, air, and nourishment to sustain our lives. It is through the harmonious combination of these five elements that life becomes possible. Therefore, our first duty is to offer our gratitude to the Divine through the five elements. In the Sarva Shakti Siddhiyaga, we offer our salutations to the origin, to the evolution of that origin, and to the five elements through which creation expanded and manifested. Who are we indebted to next? Our ancestors. Our ancestors have given us the knowledge and wisdom that guide our lives. They preserved both scientific and spiritual understanding for future generations. Therefore, if we wish to express our gratitude to them, we should study the wisdom they left behind: the teachings of the sages, the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, and the ethical teachings that illuminate the right way to live. This is known as Rishi Yajna, our sacred debt to the sages. Then comes Pitru Yajna, our debt to our parents and ancestors. Our father gives us life, and our mother gives us the body through which we experience this world. We can never repay such a profound gift. Our gratitude is expressed by caring for and protecting our parents throughout their lives. That is why, in our spiritual practices and meditation, we offer salutations to the elders, to our parents, and to the Guru. Who comes next? Our fellow human beings. Think about the food we eat every day. Behind a single meal are the efforts of farmers, agricultural workers, traders, cooks, servers, and countless others. Only through the contribution of all these people does food reach our hands. The same is true of the clothes we wear. Farmers grow the cotton. Workers process it. Merchants transport it. Weavers transform it into cloth. Many others contribute before it finally becomes the clothing that protects our dignity. Therefore, we must recognize our debt to our fellow human beings and live with gratitude toward them. Beyond humanity are the countless other living beings with whom we share this Earth. Even the smallest creatures have their place and purpose. Earthworms, for example, play an important role in agriculture. Cows, goats, horses, camels, donkeys, and countless other animals have supported human life in many ways. Human beings are therefore connected not only to one another but to all forms of life. To live in harmony with all beings is the essence of Yoga. But understand one thing clearly: there is a difference between merely living together and living in unity. Many people may live together, yet they may not truly be united. Unity means living with love, understanding, compassion, and acceptance. Even if someone in your family has weaknesses or makes mistakes, there is no need to live with hatred toward them. For example, if a husband struggles with alcoholism, the answer is not hatred or rejection. What is needed is compassion and love. When we live with love, a person may recognize their mistakes, transform themselves, and eventually repent. Therefore, begin with your own family. Live in harmony with your parents. Live in harmony with your neighbors. Live in harmony with your community. Live in harmony with your city. Live in harmony with the entire world. That is Yoga. True Yoga is not merely sitting in meditation. It is learning to live in harmony with everything around us. And there is only one way to create that harmony: Love. Love. Love.
