What is your business really worth? | Profit, freedom & the courage to subtract | Josh Berg

from Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO

In this episode of the Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO Podcast, I connected with Josh Berg, Founder of Hedgehog Marketing and Mechanic Marketing, to explore what happens when a founder stops asking, "How do I grow this business?" and starts asking a far more uncomfortable question:"Is this business still creating the life I wanted it to?"Josh had built the kind of agency many founders aspire to. The team was growing, new clients kept arriving and, from the outside, the business looked successful. Yet beneath the momentum, revenue wasn't translating into meaningful profit, complexity was replacing clarity and the business was demanding more of him than it was giving back.Rather than chasing another growth strategy, Josh chose to redesign the business itself. That meant letting people go, questioning long-held assumptions about scale, confronting his own sense of business self-worth and learning that saying yes to everything was slowly taking him further away from the work he genuinely valued.Josh realised he had spent years hiring people to solve problems that he, as the founder, first needed to understand himself. That shift changed not only the structure of the business, but the way he thought about leadership, pricing, value and growth.Today, his business generates around 80 per cent of its previous revenue with a fraction of the team, stronger profitability and something that had become far more valuable than growth alone. As Josh put it: "It was better on my soul." Sometimes it begins with having the courage to subtract.THE SHAPE SHIFT IN MOTIONAt the heart of this conversation was a shift from growing for appearance towards building for value, freedom and long-term alignment. LEARN (LETTING GO)✨ The belief that more employees, clients and revenue automatically create a stronger business.✨ The pressure to keep scaling because slowing down might look like failure.✨ The habit of hiring people before fixing the foundations of the business itself.UNLEARN (CREATE, REIMAGINE & RESHAPE)✨ Reimagine subtraction as a form of strategic growth.✨ Reshape pricing around expertise, value and business self-worth.✨ Release clients, services and structures that demand more than they return.RELEARN (TEST & IMPLEMENT)✨ Build relational partnerships rather than remaining trapped in transactional work.✨ Create enough space to think clearly, recover and make better decisions.✨ Say no more often, so your energy can go towards the work that matters most.ACTIVE RECOVERY (REFLECT & RESET)✨ What is your business asking you to keep carrying that no longer belongs?✨ Where are you measuring success by appearance rather than value?✨ What could become stronger if you allowed something to become smaller?🔗 https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshberg1/🌐 https://hedgehogmarketing.com.au🔧 http://www.mechanicmarketing.co/💭 What would you stop carrying if bigger was no longer the goal?If something is shifting in your business, leadership or growth journey, start with a Strategic Shape Shift Diagnostic:https://calendly.com/beeformless/strategicshapeshiftdiagnostic#beeformless #flowdrivenceo #hedgehogmarketing #mechanicmarketing #growth #founderjourney #selfworth #entrepreneurship #freedom #soul
