What Nancy Guthrie's Hoaxer Actually Got

from Hidden Killers Live! Daily True Crime News & Breakdowns · host Hidden Killers Podcast

A woman is still missing, and the man who tortured her family with a fake ransom scheme just got a sentence that fits in a headline: probation. Tony Brueski lays out what happened to the person behind the bogus bitcoin ransom notes sent to the Guthrie family, and why a retired FBI agent is calling the outcome a disgrace. The charge was knocked down to harassment. The sentence was five years of probation, all counts running concurrently instead of stacked on top of each other. Retired special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer says the light punishment risks emboldening the wave of copycats already flooding investigators, a group now referred to inside the Bureau as the TMZ Twelve. There's more sitting underneath that plea deal than one bad sentence. An original ransom note demanded four million dollars with an escalating threat attached. A second letter, stranger still, went only to local television stations, apologizing and calling Nancy's death an accident. Both were reportedly linked to the same IP address, one of the only solid threads investigators have. And Porch Guy, a person tied to the case, remains unidentified. Meanwhile, the search itself keeps producing contradictions. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been dodging questions about his own record, at one point telling a reporter to enjoy his hit piece. The FBI and the Sheriff's Department can't settle who's actually leading the investigation, and a retired agent says there's genuine disagreement inside the Bureau about whether certain pieces of evidence are even legitimate. Kash Patel added his own layer of confusion, telling a podcast audience his agents were locked out for days, while one of his own special agents was already standing beside Sheriff Nanos at a press conference, a fueled plane waiting in the background. Nancy Guthrie is still out there.
