What Nolan Wells' Medical Examiner Got Wrong Before

Dr. Staci Turner has Nolan Wells' sealed autopsy results in her hands right now, and this isn't the first time her office's conclusions haven't matched the evidence. In 2021, Turner ruled Damien Cameron's in-custody death "undetermined" — despite documenting neck injuries in her own autopsy consistent with compression. The New York Times and Mississippi Today brought in three independent forensic pathologists to review the same file. All three disagreed with her. Dr. Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner of New York City, called it "homicide, absolutely." A Rutgers pathologist said there was nothing undetermined about it at all. A grand jury leaned on Turner's ruling and declined to charge the deputies who restrained Cameron. One of them, Hunter Elward, is now in federal prison — convicted as part of the Rankin County "Goon Squad" torture cases, though not for Cameron's death. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins this episode to break down what Turner's history means for the Wells investigation, why the district attorney — not a court, not a deadline — controls when Nolan's results become public, and why Christine Wells-Wonsley filed subpoenas on the day she buried her son.
