Atma Vicharam: Who Am I Beyond the Body, Mind, Intellect? — Gurumahan’s 26th Velvi Discourse. If you want to know Brahman, the supreme reality that pervades the entire Universe, you do not have to go anywhere. It is within you. It is you. Do not search for it outside. Begin with the understanding that God exists, and that God is one. There are different stages on this path. First come the external practices. Then come the inner practices of the mind. These lead you from ordinary awareness to the path of light. Among all mantras, Gayatri is considered the seed mantra. It points us beyond the three states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep; beyond earth, heaven, and the higher realms; beyond creation, preservation, and dissolution; beyond past, present, and future; and beyond the three gunas, Tamoguna, Rajoguna, and Sattvaguna. There is something beyond all these threefold divisions. If you know that one reality, you can understand everything. This is the wisdom of the Upanishads: knowing one thing is equal to knowing everything. Our ancestors expressed this through a simple example. To know whether a whole pot of rice is cooked, you need to test only one grain. In the same way, you do not need to understand the entire universe first. Take yourself as that one grain. Know yourself. Examine yourself deeply. When you awaken yourself, you awaken your understanding of the universe, because the universe is hidden within you. That reality within you is mystical. The power that arises from realizing it is spiritual power. When you realize that power, you can remain in a state of happiness wherever you are and whatever happens around you. Develop the determination to overcome whatever comes your way. No matter how many difficulties or obstacles arise, the wisdom to overcome them is within you. That is where creation itself arises. Look deeply into your own experience. In waking, I am aware. In dreaming, I experience another world. In deep sleep, all these experiences disappear. Yet something continues to exist. The one who sees, the one who hears, the one who experiences, and the sense of “I am” all merge into that deeper consciousness. This is the truth that the ancient teachings asked us to realize. Indra and Virochana once approached Prajapati to understand the Self. When they were told to look at what appeared before them, Virochana concluded that the physical body was the Self. This is the way of the asuric nature. It identifies the body as the Self. It gives importance to the body, decorating it with clothes and ornaments and continuing to identify with it even when the life within the body has departed. But the divine understanding is different. What is unchanging, imperishable, and eternal is the Self. The body grows, changes, decays, and finally perishes. Therefore, the body cannot be the true Self. Then examine the mind. The mind constantly changes. It experiences pleasure and pain, happiness and sorrow. What keeps changing cannot be the eternal Self. Go deeper still. Is knowledge the Self? We may say, “I know this. I know that. I have mastered many skills.” But knowledge also changes. In deep sleep, our ordinary knowledge disappears. Yet we continue to exist. That which comes and goes cannot be the eternal Self. The Self does not come or go. It simply exists. Nothing in this universe can arise without a source. Therefore, know the source from which everything arises. Where is that source? It is within you. You are that reality. The Vedas point to this truth. What you see in the mirror is only your image. The body you see, the mind that understands the world, and the experiences you go through are not the whole of who you are. Beyond the body, mind, and ordinary experience is the fourth state, the state of pure consciousness. This is the state of true greatness. Therefore, believe in yourself. Know that you are that. Know that you are the Self. Know that you are divine. When you truly realize this, you cannot be deceived by falsehood. You will no longer be easily disturbed or influenced by what happens around you. Who are you? You are that divine consciousness. Send us Fan Mail Let Wisdom Flourish! Let Peace Prevail!
