When Jesus Became Sweeter Than Sugar 🤍✝️

from "The Exchange" -Episode 01

Trading the cravings that control us for the satisfaction only Christ can give Welcome to Strength Exchanged — the podcast where we trade the heavy for the holy. I’m your host, Juanita, and I’m so glad you’re here. Today’s episode is a very personal one. It’s called: “When Jesus Became Sweeter Than Sugar.” And I want to begin by saying this… This is not just a story about food. It’s not just a story about weight loss. It’s not just a story about breaking a habit. It’s a story about what happens when Jesus becomes greater than the thing we once ran to for comfort. For many years, I thought my struggle was with sugar. I thought if I could just have more discipline… if I could just try harder… if I could just control myself better… then I would finally be free. But what God showed me was something much deeper. The problem wasn’t just what I was reaching for. The deeper question was: “What was my heart searching for?” Because sometimes the things we crave are not really about the thing itself. Sometimes we are searching for comfort. Sometimes we are searching for peace. Sometimes we are trying to numb disappointment, stress, loneliness, fear, or exhaustion. And for me, food became something I looked to for what only God could provide. I didn’t realise I was asking sugar to do something it was never created to do. I was asking it to comfort my soul. To calm my emotions. To fill the empty places. But temporary comfort can never satisfy a soul created for eternity. Only Jesus can. Psalm 34:8 says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Isn’t that beautiful? God invites us to taste and experience His goodness. Because He knows our hearts are always searching for satisfaction. The world offers us things that promise comfort but leave us wanting more. But Jesus offers us something different. He doesn’t just give us something to consume. He gives us Himself. For so long, I thought freedom meant having enough strength to resist. But I discovered something even better: Freedom came when I surrendered. When I stopped trying to fight in my own strength and started exchanging my weakness for His strength. Because the truth is… I could not overcome my struggles by simply trying harder. I needed heart transformation. I needed Jesus to become my greater desire. And slowly, God began changing my appetite — not just physically, but spiritually. The things that once had power over me started losing their grip. Sugar was no longer my comfort. Food was no longer my refuge. Jesus became my refuge. And that doesn’t mean every day is perfect. It doesn’t mean temptation never comes. But it means I have discovered something sweeter. A love that satisfies deeper than any craving. A peace that doesn’t disappear when circumstances change. A joy that isn’t dependent on what I consume, achieve, or accomplish. Because Jesus is enough. Can I encourage you with this? Don’t just ask: “Why can’t I stop?” Ask: “Lord, what am I really searching for?” Because often, beneath the craving is a deeper longing. And Jesus is inviting you to bring that longing to Him. He doesn’t come with shame. He comes with grace. Romans 8:1 reminds us: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God is not standing over you waiting to punish you. He is inviting you closer. He wants to heal the places where you have been trying to satisfy yourself with things that were never meant to carry that weight. Friend, whatever you are carrying today… Whatever you have been running to… Whatever has felt stronger than you… Remember this: Jesus is sweeter than anything this world can offer.
