Why is it that only Republicans in the United States are complaining about Canadian wildfires?I haven’t heard a peep from a Democrat.About 99 percent of climate scientists agree that human activity is warming the planet. The connection between that warming and larger, more destructive wildfires is established science. It is not a theory or an opinion.Donald Trump has repeatedly called climate change a hoax while continuing to attack renewable energy.On July 16, 2026, four Republican members of Congress from Michigan sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney. John James, Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar, and Lisa McClain argued that “American lungs are paying the price for Canadian inaction.”They claimed Canada has the tools to prevent these fires but has chosen not to use them. They said American hospitals are treating children, older adults, and dialysis patients because of smoke crossing the border. They warned that if Canada failed to improve forest management, the United States would act on its own.At the time, Ontario had 136 active wildfires in the northwest, including 63 burning out of control.The letter was only the beginning.Lisa McClain later claimed Canada was doing very little and said she had spoken with the White House. John James posted, “Canada: No Excuses. Stop The Smoke.” Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno announced plans to introduce legislation to sanction Canada. Congressman Tom Barrett even questioned whether the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge should be delayed until Canada got the fires under control.But here’s the question.Why are these attacks coming almost entirely from Republicans?
