Where Did My Sex Drive Go? And Is Testosterone Really the Answer?

from Healthspan on Her Terms with Dr. Sheri · host Sheri Erwin, DNP, MBA, APRN, FNP-C Doctor of Nursing Practice | Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner

What happens when you still love your partner, may still find them attractive, but sex simply does not cross your mind anymore? It can feel as though someone slowly turned down the volume on your sex drive until one day you realized it had gone completely quiet. That change can feel confusing, lonely and deeply personal. I understand that experience not only as a clinician, but as a menopausal woman who has experienced it herself.A quiet sex drive does not automatically mean your relationship is failing. It does not automatically mean your testosterone is low. And it certainly does not mean you are broken. In this episode, we talk about the different ways low desire can show up. You may love your partner but rarely think about sex. You may enjoy intimacy once it begins but never feel the urge to initiate. Or perhaps you do not particularly miss sex, but your partner does, leaving you feeling pressured or guilty. We also explore something many women were never taught: desire does not always arrive first. Sometimes interest develops only after affection, privacy, connection and touch that genuinely feels good. This is known as responsive desire, and it is every bit as real as the spontaneous, lightning-bolt version we see in movies. But responsive desire is not the explanation for everything. Sleep loss, stress, mood changes, medication, vaginal dryness and painful sex can all turn the volume down. Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause may be part of the story, but hormones are only one control on a much larger soundboard. Then we answer the question many women are asking: Is testosterone the answer? I explain when testosterone may help, why a laboratory result alone cannot diagnose low desire, what realistic improvement may look like and why more is not better. Testosterone can be a useful tool for selected women, but it cannot correct pain, restore emotional safety or create enough energy to overcome months of disrupted sleep. Most importantly, this episode will help you ask three questions: Is this different for me? Does it bother me? What do I want now?Your sex drive is not a measure of your femininity, your love for your partner or your worth. If you want help understanding what changed, you deserve a thoughtful conversation rather than being told it is simply part of getting older.Subscribe to Healthspan on Her Terms with Dr. Sheri, share this episode with a woman who may need it and leave a review so more women can find these honest conversations.Start Here: Take the Next Decades Healthspan Quiz.
