On May 6, 2020, three-year-old Dylan Ehler vanished while playing in his grandmother’s backyard in Truro, Nova Scotia His grandmother claims she had briefly turned away to leash a dog, and in that fleeting moment, Dylan disappeared. A massive search followed, but the only trace ever found were his two rubber boots—discovered caught in debris in a shallow brook not far from the property. With little progress in finding Dylan, the case has taken on a life of its own online. Fueled by speculation and emotion, it has become a magnet for conspiracy theories, unrelenting armchair detectives, disturbing ransom hoaxes, and a cyberbullying case that ended up before the courts. In this series, we explore all of it—from the facts of Dylan’s disappearance to the chaos that followed.
