Why are people paying 2000 a month to rent a newyork city apartment

I really don’t get it. I’m trying to understand how we got to a place where people are willingly paying close to $2,000 a month to live in what is basically a box — 300 square feet — in New York City. That’s not an apartment, that’s a storage unit with a stove. And somehow, this has been normalized like it’s just part of “the dream.”What dream?Because from the outside looking in, it feels like people are chasing an image more than an actual quality of life.
