Why Did Nolan Wells' Search Find Nothing Until Monday?

from Hidden Killers Live! Daily True Crime News & Breakdowns · host Hidden Killers Podcast

Search crews covered a patch of water off Horn Island on Sunday and found nothing. A ranger went back Monday morning and found Nolan Wells. Nolan was eighteen, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was last seen on the island around three in the afternoon on the Fourth of July. About ninety minutes later, the boat's operator called a towing company to report the boat was taking on water. The boat left the island at 4:31, and a National Park Service ranger recovered Nolan's body at 8:45 the next morning, off the island's northwestern tip, in the same general area searched the day before. Robin Dreeke joins Tony Brueski to walk through what that gap between the two searches actually means, and what it doesn't. Currents, timing, visibility, and search patterns can all explain a miss like that. So can other things. Neither of them is claiming to know which one this is. They also dig into the parts of this case that still don't line up: a phone left on the dashboard with two competing explanations, an empty photo roll with two competing explanations, and a video that circulated widely with two competing accounts of how it got out. Attorney Ben Crump says Nolan's friends had control of his phone after he was left behind, and that messages had already been deleted by the time the family got it back. No agency has released a cause or manner of death. The family has arranged its own independent examination in Washington, D.C., separate from the one done by the state, and District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath says the case is heading to a grand jury once the investigation is complete. Where a body is found, and when, tells its own part of the story. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
