Why Investigators Kept Nolan Wells' Throat

from Hidden Killers Live! Daily True Crime News & Breakdowns · host Hidden Killers Podcast

During the first autopsy on eighteen-year-old Nolan Wells, the state of Mississippi retained specific structures from his throat. The trachea. The hyoid bone. The laryngeal cartilage. When the family's independent pathologist later reviewed the case, he noted that this kind of retention is standard when there are concerns about compression injuries.Nolan went to a July Fourth boat party on Horn Island with a group of friends. He was the only one who did not come home. Two days later, a park ranger found his body at the island's northwest tip. He was the only Black member of the group. The independent autopsy returned a finding of undetermined cause and manner of death. The pathologist could not rule out that non-accidental factors contributed to or caused the death. The official state autopsy has still not been released. Nineteen days after retaining the throat structures, the state has said nothing about what those tissues revealed. The DA referred the case to a grand jury. Ben Crump announced the independent findings at the NAACP National Convention. The national board passed a resolution calling for transparency.Whether the public accounts given by the people who were on that island hold up under oath is the next question. A grand jury can compel testimony that no media interview can. And the phones belonging to everyone in that group will produce a digital record of every message sent, every call placed, every search made, and every deletion attempted.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer breaks down what the throat retention signals about where investigators think this case is heading, what the grand jury's subpoena power changes, what the phone evidence will show, and how long an investigation of this scope takes before it reaches a grand jury.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
