Why People Pull Away When You Get Too Close

from Emotional Intelligence Developer Hosted by Emotional Intelligence Developer

Everything seems to be going well. You're getting closer, the connection feels real, and then suddenly the other person starts creating distance. Why does that happen? Sometimes people pull away because they've lost interest. Sometimes life gets complicated. And sometimes emotional closeness brings up discomfort, fear, or a need for independence. This episode explores what can happen when one person wants more closeness while the other starts pulling away. We look at attachment, emotional availability, communication, boundaries, and the difference between understanding someone's behaviour and accepting behaviour that continually hurts you. Most importantly, this isn't about diagnosing somebody or trying to solve the mystery inside their head. It's about looking at the relationship that's actually in front of you. Are they communicating? Are they making an effort? Are they willing to meet you halfway? Because you can understand someone's struggles without making those struggles your responsibility. Sometimes the most emotionally intelligent question isn't, “How do I get this person to come closer?” It's, “Is this person actually willing to meet me halfway?”
