Why You Can't Relax After Work — And How to Reset
from Unpacked
You got the kids down. The house is finally quiet. You sat down with a drink and waited for your shoulders to drop — and they never did.If that's you, this episode is about what's actually happening in your body, and why "just relax" has never once worked.Andy walks through the two settings your nervous system runs on, why a thousand years ago it knew how to come back down after a threat, and why your modern day never gives it the chance. There's real research behind this: in a study of 109 executives, ninety percent of the stressed ones were in chronic stress — and their cortisol stayed elevated even at rest, even sitting still, even when nothing was happening. Their bodies had lost the ability to fully stand down. Then the part most people get wrong. "Just relax" fails because you're using your conscious mind to solve a subconscious problem — speaking English to something that doesn't speak English. What the subconscious does understand is imagery, repetition, and safety. You'll hear how this shows up at different stages of life — the scroll, the car in the driveway you can't get out of, the drink at five, the conversation from 1997 replaying at midnight, the habit of finding the exits in every room. Same problem, different uniforms.Andy also tells the story of the stretch where he was working till eight every night and drinking to slow himself down enough to sleep — and what he eventually understood about it.Then three things you can start tonight: an intentional transition, a single-task hour, and a thirty-second body check. The episode closes with a guided wind-down — a few minutes of relaxation and imagery you can use whenever your body forgets how to let go, ending with a full count back to alert. Please listen safely: the wind-down at the end is a relaxation and guided-imagery exercise. Never listen to it while driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that needs your attention to stay safe. If you have a history of seizures, or have dealt with dissociation or a serious mental health condition, just listen along rather than following the exercise, or check with your provider first. This show is educational and is not medical advice, and it isn't a substitute for care from a doctor or therapist.
