Why You Wake Up at 3 AM — And Why Fixing the Cause Isn't Enough
You didn't wake up from a noise. Your eyes just opened, your heart was already going, and nothing had happened. Then you looked at the clock and did the math. This one is about the nights you did everything right and woke at three anyway.Sleep is built in two halves that do completely different jobs, and that structure alone explains why 3 a.m. feels the way it does. The cortisol claim you've read online is wrong in a way that makes people feel broken — cortisol climbing in the early hours is supposed to happen. And if stress or discomfort started the waking, shouldn't fixing it end the waking? It's been tested, and the answer surprises most people: the thing that starts a sleep problem and the thing that keeps it going are often not the same thing. Then why the same thought is manageable at noon and unbearable at three — when you wake in the night, the part of you that worries wakes up first, and the part that puts things in proportion is still asleep. The practical half starts by taking something away. Cool room, dark curtains, no caffeine after two. That's sleep hygiene, and the clinical guidance is that on its own it doesn't do what people think. The tools that actually work are in this episode, free, whether or not you ever speak to me. It ends with a two-minute reset.WORK WITH MEFree 20-minute consultation, in person in Portsmouth, New Hampshire or over Zoom.https://calmopshypnosis.com — (207) 606-8745PLEASE LISTEN SAFELYThe reset at the end of this episode is a relaxation and guided-imagery exercise. The 5 PM Drink That Nobody Calls a Problem Yet
You know the one. The drink at five. Nobody's worried about it — including you. This episode isn't about quitting. It's about what that drink is actually doing, and why every obvious attempt to cut back falls apart on a Tuesday that wasn't even a bad day.We get into why your body reaches for it at five and not at noon, why alcohol is a brake you're borrowing rather than something you're adding, why the drink stops working even when you keep it, and what's really happening at three in the morning. Then three things you can do tonight — none of which are "quit."Andy also tells his own version of this one, plainly. This episode is not treatment, diagnosis, or medical advice. If you drink daily and your body may be physically dependent, stopping suddenly on your own can be medically dangerous — talk to a doctor first. Why You Can't Relax After Work — And How to Reset
You got the kids down. The house is finally quiet. You sat down with a drink and waited for your shoulders to drop — and they never did.If that's you, this episode is about what's actually happening in your body, and why "just relax" has never once worked.Andy walks through the two settings your nervous system runs on, why a thousand years ago it knew how to come back down after a threat, and why your modern day never gives it the chance. There's real research behind this: in a study of 109 executives, ninety percent of the stressed ones were in chronic stress — and their cortisol stayed elevated even at rest, even sitting still, even when nothing was happening. Their bodies had lost the ability to fully stand down. Then the part most people get wrong. "Just relax" fails because you're using your conscious mind to solve a subconscious problem — speaking English to something that doesn't speak English. What the subconscious does understand is imagery, repetition, and safety. You'll hear how this shows up at different stages of life — the scroll, the car in the driveway you can't get out of, the drink at five, the conversation from 1997 replaying at midnight, the habit of finding the exits in every room. Same problem, different uniforms.Andy also tells the story of the stretch where he was working till eight every night and drinking to slow himself down enough to sleep — and what he eventually understood about it.Then three things you can start tonight: an intentional transition, a single-task hour, and a thirty-second body check. The episode closes with a guided wind-down — a few minutes of relaxation and imagery you can use whenever your body forgets how to let go, ending with a full count back to alert. Please listen safely: the wind-down at the end is a relaxation and guided-imagery exercise. Never listen to it while driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that needs your attention to stay safe. If you have a history of seizures, or have dealt with dissociation or a serious mental health condition, just listen along rather than following the exercise, or check with your provider first. This show is educational and is not medical advice, and it isn't a substitute for care from a doctor or therapist.
