Winning by Losing

What do you do when someone wrongs you – I mean, really wrongs you? Instinctively, we want to even the score, prove our point, protect our pride, don't we? But in that moment, there's a choice: either to strike back … or to break the cycle of evil. In South Africa, after decades of racial oppression, the end of apartheid could easily have led to revenge. Instead, leaders like Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu chose a different path – the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It was by no means perfect, but through it they faced evil head-on, answering it with forgiveness and truth rather than revenge and retribution. It didn't erase all the pain, but it unquestionably broke the cycle of hate and changed a nation's future. A couple of thousand years earlier, the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome – a society steeped in violence, pride, and vengeance – and gave them this radical instruction: Romans 12:21 Don't let evil defeat you, but defeat evil by doing good. It's the last line of a chapter all about genuine love, patience in suffering, and blessing those who persecute you. Paul isn't being naïve here; he's echoing the very heart of Jesus – the One who conquered evil not by force, but by sacrifice. Look, evil feeds on retaliation, but it starves in the presence of grace. So, when next you're tempted to get even, remember: Victory doesn't come from striking back. It comes from loving when it costs the most. Because that's how evil is defeated – one act of good at a time. Don't let evil defeat you, but defeat evil by doing good. That's God's Word.
