Wishing everyone have a happy new year, Laos new year
from Shattered but Unbroken · host Anousone
In this episode, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Aprilis a special time of year in Lao culture, marking the Lao New Year—atime filled with joy, tradition, and togetherness. It is a season whenpeople travel from near and far to return home, reunite with family andfriends, and celebrate life.During this festival, there is an abundance of food, laughter, music, and dancing. One of the most meaningful traditions is the waterfestival, where people splash water on each other as a symbol ofcleansing, renewal, and good luck for the year ahead. The streets comealive with celebration, and for a moment, everyone shares in happinessand unity.Even though this time of year brings back many beautiful memories forme, it also reminds me of how much life has changed. I no longer have ahome to return to in Asia. Since coming to the United States in 1990, Ihave built a new life here. Now, in 2026, I realize that this countryhas become my home.Looking back, life in Laos was extremely difficult. Under the conditionsat that time, there was very little freedom, limited access to food, andconstant fear. Speaking freely was not always safe, and many peoplefaced unimaginable hardships. Survival itself was a daily challenge, andmany lives were lost. These experiences shaped who I am today.Because of that past, I carry deep gratitude for the life I have now.Living in the United States has given me opportunities, safety, and thefreedom to speak and live openly. It is something I never take forgranted. This New Year, while I may not be able to return to the place I oncecalled home, I hold onto the memories, the culture, and the spirit ofcelebration in my heart. I wish everyone happiness, good health, andpeace in the year ahead. Wherever you are, may you find joy, connection, and a place to call home.
