Women and Alcohol and Beyond Bullying

from The Kathryn Zox Show · host Kathryn Zox

Kathryn interviews award-winning journalist Ann Dowsett Johnston, author of "DRINK: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol". Named one of Washington Post's best books of 2013, DRINK takes aim at an alarming epidemic: the worrisome rise in binge drinking and alcohol abuse among girls and women. Dowsett Johnston reveals how dangerous levels of female drinking are on the upswing, precipitated in part by an unmitigated push by the alcohol industry to woo women drinkers from an early age. Kathryn also interviews Jonathan Fast MSW, PhD and author of "Beyond Bullying: Breaking the Cycle of Shame, Bullying, and Violence". Why are some kids magnets for bullying? Dr. Fast weaves together research from the fields of psychology, sociology, economics and history to create a single overarching theory centered on the root theme of bullying behaviors: shame. This book provides concrete suggestions for dealing with shame, including techniques for diffusing potentially harmful situations.
