World Stage, MAGA Script: When Diplomacy Became Dinner Theater (🇬🇧 UK edition)
from ~ Civics Unhinged: Dispatches from Trumpistan! · host F.P. Dunneagin
Let me get this straight. Trump destroyed Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, promised a better one, failed to deliver, bombed Iranian sites in his second term with no meaningful result, and is now offering Tehran $30 billion to talk. That’s not diplomacy — it’s an audition tape for a geopolitical reality game show. And Iran is just the opening act.Because what we’re witnessing now, in real time, is a second Trump term hell-bent on turning U.S. foreign policy into a global grievance pageant — complete with a curtain call for Putin, a warm-up act for Kim Jong Un, and a national anthem rewritten to the tune of “Macho Man.” Trump’s global shenanigans aren’t just diplomatic incompetence; it’s a deliberate plan to dismantle the postwar liberal order in favor of an authoritarian carnival where the world’s worst actors get top billing, reflecting Trump’s desire to return to a time when spheres of influence ruled the world and placing himself alongside the despicable duo of Putin and Xi.Act I: Theater of the Grotesque — Trump’s 2025 Foreign Policy in Real TimeThis isn’t about his first term anymore. It’s about what he’s doing right now, with the full machinery of the executive branch in his hands again. He has openly threatened to withdraw from NATO unless member nations prepay their military dues like Netflix subscribers. He’s already called the EU “worse than China, just smaller” and has even threatened punitive measures against allies for failing to follow suit. The result? European allies are now holding crisis meetings without the United States — although he was ‘warmly’ welcomed at the recent NATO meeting, where NATO ministers wittingly played ‘stroke Trump’s ego’ to get him to support Article 5, which he did.He has made no effort to support Ukraine, effectively greenlighting Putin’s continued invasion by blocking weapons deliveries, ending humanitarian funding, and resuming his line about it being “a regional conflict that doesn’t concern us.” Trump, in essence, has taken a wrecking ball to the transatlantic alliance and handed Moscow the blueprints.Act II: Annexation Fantasies and Post-Truth GeopoliticsIran may be the week’s scandal, but it’s part of a pattern. Trump’s second-term foreign policy is no longer about mistakes, but incompetence disguised as malice in motion. He has revived proposals to annex Canada, calling it “strategically inevitable” and suggesting that “most Canadians would welcome it.” He has again floated plans to retake the Panama Canal, accusing Jimmy Carter of “surrendering our sovereignty” — as if history were a casino bet he can reverse. He openly discusses forcefully acquiring Greenland, describing it as “a national security imperative.” America has long sought, but never owned, Greenland.None of this is satire. This maleficence is the foreign policy of a man who sees maps as Monopoly boards and sovereign nations as branding opportunities.Act III: From Bad Faith to No FaithHe’s not even pretending to consult the intelligence community. Although the CIA and DNI were initially cut out of the Congressional Iran bombing briefings, Trump subsequently relented and included the CIA in the briefings, but only after bipartisan pushback.Meanwhile, Trump’s State Department has become a shell, with ambassadorships unfilled or occupied by campaign donors. A notable exception in the ambassadorial ranks is the confirmation of Jared Kushner’s father, Charles, as ambassador to France. The elder Kushner previously served time in prison for tax evasion and witness tampering; he was pardoned by Trump in 2020.Multilateral diplomacy has been replaced by transactional thuggery: if you pay up, you get attention. Suppose you don’t, then expect tariffs, troops, or tweets. Trump is also moving to defund U.S. contributions to the UN, the WHO, and international climate pacts, citing “woke globalism” as the enemy.Act IV: Spectacle as Strategy, Empire as EgoThis ‘spectacle as strategy’ is Trumpism unbound. A foreign policy no longer guided by doctrine or ideology — just a pure, distilled ego.The mission is not peace. It’s dominance. The method is not diplomacy. It’s coercion. The message is not unity. It’s me first, or else.Trump has already hinted that “we need a strong hand in the Middle East,” refusing to condemn Netanyahu’s escalation in Gaza and agreeing to ride shotgun on Israel’s attacks on Tehran by bombing Iranian nuclear enrichment sites. He has proposed “reforming” NATO to allow preemptive strikes without consensus. He’s appointed loyalists to the Pentagon, many of whom are on record advocating first-strike nuclear policy as a viable deterrent.Trump doesn’t just want to withdraw from the world. He wants to punish it by making it conform to his limited, ill-informed image/vision.Finale: The MAGA Doctrine — America Alone, Arrogant, and ArmedSo yes, the $30 billion offered to Iran is absurd. But it’s only one act in a broader circus of foreign policy regression. This is no longer the foreign policy of a narcissist. It’s the foreign policy of a restoration project, aiming to reverse every American/multilateral gain made before the 21st century. He’s not improvising anymore. He’s executing his self-styled MAGA game plan. The result is that the United States is increasingly feared but no longer respected. It is militarily menacing but diplomatically neutered, alone, arrogant, and armed.Welcome to the Second Trump Administration. Where diplomacy goes to die, and the world stage becomes a one-man circus, with Trump as one of three ringmasters. The curtain hasn’t dropped. But the exits are narrowing.~Dunneagin🎧 Find Civics Unhinged on your favorite platform:* Apple Podcasts* Spotify* Pocket Casts* 📡 Prefer RSS feed?
