WWE SmackDown 7/10/26 Review: Punk vs Cody Set, Corbin Returns, Gunther Loses It

SmackDown was a strange show this week, folks. Some important developments, some dead spots, and one absolutely vicious closing angle with Gunther going completely off the rails. CM Punk opened the show as the new Undisputed WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes came out, and just like that we’ve got Punk vs. Cody official for SummerSlam. Big match? Absolutely. Logical process? That’s another story, because if Sami Zayn was the former champion, maybe he should be the one getting that rematch instead of Cody walking in and saying “SummerSlam.”Finn Balor beat Tama Tonga in a fine opener, the Bloodline business with Royce Keys had almost no life to it, Jade Cargill and the Baddies looked vicious again, and Baron Corbin got a great reaction returning to wreck Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes. Then Gunther closed the show by assaulting Nick Aldis like a complete maniac when he didn’t get the answer he wanted.Overall, definitely not a bad SmackDown, but a very uneven one. The big angles mattered, the middle dragged, and Gunther absolutely stole the ending.
