Yellow-rumped Wanderers

from Wild With Nature · host Shane Sater

My newest podcast is about yellow-rumped warblers—but it’s not just for birders. It’s for your neighbor or friend who raises their eyebrows whenever you start talking about nature. And, of course, it’s also for those of us who are already amazed by the natural world around us.  Yellow-rumped Wanderers is a special production in collaboration with Will Valentine, of the Will’s Birdbrain podcast. Our joint podcast explores the fascinating lives of these 12-gram migrants—as well as the similarities between their lives and our own. On the way, we get to hear about spring yellow-rumped warbler migration on a stream restoration site in Montana, the wonder of finding birds wherever we are, and the opportunities and challenges of moving from one place to another. Through our conversation, we draw the connections between the lives of yellow-rumped warblers and our own experience as human beings—making birds accessible and relatable to all of us. Will this podcast convince your skeptical neighbor to develop an interest in birds and nature? Maybe, or maybe not… but it’s worth a try, right? Here are a few of my favorite excerpts: “People experience all sorts of traumatic events during their life. And just like yellow-rumped warblers… I think we can figure out how to make it work.” “When we kind of take a step back and appreciate the wildlife and the little bit of nature that we get to experience every day, we'll find tremendous value in that life.” “It's also right outside our doorsteps. It's also right along the freeway and in the middle of our cities and wherever we live. And then we see something like the yellow-rumped warbler that crosses those barriers and it's in all of these different habitats, from really rural, wild Maine to the middle of Seattle. And I think that's amazing.” “His crisp gray head blended in with the bark of the thinleaf alder as he flitted through the branches, but his brilliant yellow throat and crown glowed like feathered sunshine.” Full transcript available at: https://wildwithnature.com/2023/07/12/yellow-rumped-warblers/
