Ireland Announces Equal Pay for Men's, Women's Soccer Teams

👉Article The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has announced that women will be paid the same amount of money per match as men when playing for the country's senior national soccer teams. Members of the men's team had previously been paid about $3,000 per match, while members of the women's team had been paid about $600 per match. The FAI said that the men's team has agreed to a reduction in fees for international games, with the money making up part of the new payments for the women's team. Women's team captain Katie McCabe said that the decision was "a huge step forward" for equality in Irish sports, and thanked the men's team for agreeing to it. As recently as 2017 the women's team was in the news because they did not get paid at all for their matches. The players said that they also had to share uniforms with Ireland's underaged teams and get changed for games in airport bathrooms. At the time the team asked for a gym membership, more uniforms and about $350 per match, with extra payments for winning or drawing games. The players threatened to not play a game against Slovakia, but were able to come to an agreement with the FAI and the game went ahead. Ireland is not the first country to give its men's and women's soccer teams equal pay. It joins England, Brazil, Norway, Australia and New Zealand, which have also made the change over the last four years.
