Travel company Expedia has announced that it will no longer sell vacations that include experiences with captive dolphins, whales or similar animals.Expedia is one of the largest travel companies in the world, selling flights, accommodation and tickets to many different attractions. Expedia Group also owns a number of popular travel websites and services, including Hotels.com, Cheaptickets and Ebookers.Expedia's new rules mean that from early 2022, it won't sell tickets to shows where dolphins and whales have to perform. Tourists won't be able to use Expedia to buy tickets to attractions where they can do things like swim with captive dolphins and whales either.Expedia will, however, still sell tickets for seaside sanctuaries where the animals won't be made to perform and can only be looked at.Animal rights activists have been asking travel companies to stop selling tickets to whale and dolphin shows for a number of years. Such shows are already banned in places like Canada, India and Bolivia. However, there are still 3,000 captive dolphins being used to entertain tourists around the world, according to The Guardian.Expedia is not the first travel business to stop selling tickets to dolphin and whale shows. Virgin Holidays made the decision to stop selling them in 2019, as did British Airways.In 2018, British holiday company Thomas Cook stopped selling tickets to SeaWorld in the US after a number of animal rights protests. It's no surprise that celebrities can make a lot of money for a lot of people. But what is surprising is how much money they can still make after they have died.According to Forbes latest list of the highest-paid dead celebrities, the total amount of money made by the 13 most profitable dead celebrities in 2021 was nearly $1 billion: triple the amount from the previous year.Revenue is calculated by looking at sales of the dead celebrity's work, deals made with the owners of their estates, and other types of income made from their work in the 12 months since the last list was released in October of the previous year.Forbes has been producing the list every year since October 2001.The highest earner on the list, children's author Roald Dahl, made more money than the other 12 celebrities combined with $513 million. In September 2021, Netflix paid a reported $684 million for the Roald Dahl Story Company, of which around 75% goes to Dahl's estate.In second place is the singer and songwriter Prince, whose living family members sold around 43% of his estate to music company Primary Wave for $120 million. Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai has announced on Twitter that she has gotten married.The 24-year-old married Asser Malik in a small, traditional Islamic nikkah ceremony with a few family members present.Her husband is a manager with the Pakistan Cricket Board from the city of Lahore, Pakistan."We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead," Yousafzai wrote on Twitter. She also shared several pictures of the ceremony.In her home country of Pakistan, Yousafzai was targeted by the Taliban for criticizing the group's interpretation of Islam that limits education for girls.She was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 when she was 15 years old, but survived and moved to Birmingham, England, for medical treatment. Robot food delivery is no longer just a dream, with hundreds of little devices now traveling around college campuses and even some city sidewalks in places like the US and the UK.While robots were being tested in small numbers before the coronavirus pandemic, the companies building them say the pandemic has made them more popular. This is because there are not enough workers and customers are now preferring contactless delivery.Starship Technologies, for example, recently completed its 2 millionth delivery. The company has more than 1,000 robots, up from just 250 in 2019, and hundreds more will soon be on the streets.Delivery companies are also starting to use robots. Grubhub recently started working with Russian robot maker Yandex to bring 50 robots to the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Grubhub plans to add more campuses soon, although the company says that the service will only be for colleges for now.Many restaurants are struggling to find workers, which is making them use robots instead."There is no store in the country right now with enough delivery drivers," said Dennis Maloney of Domino's Pizza.Domino's is working with Nuro, a California company whose about 1.8-meter-tall self-driving robots go at a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour on streets, not sidewalks. Nuro is testing the delivery of groceries and restaurant food in Houston, Phoenix, and Mountain View, California.Maloney said it's not a question of if, but of when, robots will start doing more deliveries. There's nothing worse than getting off a long flight and then having to sit in traffic on the way to your accommodation. But Rome's main airport may have a solution to these travel troubles, as it plans to offer passengers the option of traveling into the city in a flying taxi.Volocopter, a German company that makes flying electric vehicles, has partnered with Fiumicino Airport in Italy to make battery-powered flying taxis available to tourists by 2024.The taxis will seat two passengers, and the journey from the airport to the city will take around 15 minutes, said Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, the company that manages the airport. This is half an hour shorter than the 45 minutes the journey currently takes by car.Volocopter's air taxis have been designed to travel up to 35 kilometers with a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour.A ride in one of the taxis will cost around $175, but the price is expected to decrease as the service becomes more popular, Troncone said.Troncone told Reuters that the battery-powered taxis will not create harmful emissions, making them more environmentally friendly than normal taxis.Volocopter is just one of many companies working on flying taxis. The California company Joby Aviation says it has completed more than 1,000 test flights of its flying taxi, which can seat four passengers and a pilot. A 28-year-old Frenchman has broken his own record for standing on top of a hot air balloon at altitude.On November 10, Remi Ouvrard flew high above the town of Chatellerault in western France with his father, Jean-Daniel Ouvrard, who was flying the balloon.They were taking part in France's Telethon — a charity event that raises money for research and support for people with neuromuscular diseases.To match the charity event's 36-37 phone number, father and son wanted to get Remi and the balloon 3,637 meters above the ground.An Agence France-Presse video shows Remi standing on a pink chair on top of the balloon while wearing a white astronaut suit. He holds two signs with the numbers 36 and 37 on them — numbers that are also on the side of the balloon.But Remi and his father didn't just get to 3,637 meters. They went even higher.Remi got to 4,016 meters, much higher than his February 2020 record of 1,217 meters.After the flight was over, Remi said everything went really well and that the weather had been perfect. 👉ArticlePortugal has banned bosses from contacting staff outside of working hours as part of its new "right to rest" law.The new law means companies with more than 10 employees could get fined if they contact staff after their working hours are over — unless they contact them because of an emergency.The new law hopes to protect employees' right to a healthy work-life balance, since there has been a large increase in remote working due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Other changes include more support for parents with young children. Now, they won't have to ask for their company's permission to work from home if their children are under 8 years old.Companies will also have to help pay for some of their staff's home electricity and internet bills. And so that workers don't feel isolated, they'll need to arrange meetings in the office at least once every two months.Government minister Ana Mendes Godinho told the Web Summit technology conference in Lisbon that she hopes the new rules will also help attract more remote workers from abroad.Godinho said she believes Portugal is one of the best places in the world for remote workers to live.Other countries already have similar laws. With this in mind, a UK website has published a list of the world's most beautiful beaches by using data from over 26 million Instagram hashtags.The team at Money.co.uk researched some of the most popular beaches in the world, then used the distance calculator on Google Maps to check their lengths. By searching through Instagram hashtags, they were able to find out how many photos were taken at each beach. They then divided that number by the length of the beach to calculate how many pictures were shared per meter.The beaches with the most Instagram posts per meter, as of June 2021, were called the most beautiful. 👉Article A man in China has been banned from an all-you-can-eat restaurant for eating too much. The man, who is known by the name Mr. Kang, is a Chinese livestreamer who makes videos about food. Mr. Kang told Hunan TV that he was no longer allowed at Handadi Seafood BBQ Buffet in Changsha city after going there several times and eating a large amount of food. He said that the restaurant is not fair to people who are able to eat a lot. According to Mr. Kang, he ate 1.5 kilograms of pigs' feet on his first visit and 3.5-4 kilograms of prawns during a later visit. On another visit he drank 30 bottles of soy milk. The owner of the restaurant told Hunan TV, "Every time he comes here, I lose a few hundred yuan." 100 yuan is about $16. He also said that he is banning all livestreamers from the restaurant. The story has more than 250 million views on the Chinese social media website Weibo. Some people believe that the restaurant owner is right to ban Mr. Kang, while others say that the restaurant should not be allowed to offer an all-you-can-eat buffet if it can't afford it. In April, China banned videos of people eating too much on social media to try to reduce food waste. DogTV has shows it says are made to keep dogs happy and less stressed when left at home alone. Its website says that the channel was made with help from pet experts and is based on more than 60 studies. According to a survey from CertaPet, 76% of American dogs get separation anxiety, meaning they feel very stressed when left alone. The most common ways owners try to help include exercise, toys and calming music. DogTV offers shows with relaxing sounds and images, and others that are made to help dogs get used to things like car rides or the sound of a doorbell. There are also shows with things dogs might find interesting — like videos of other dogs and animals — to stop them from getting bored. No one is saying dogs should be watching TV all day. Instead, DogTV says the channel can be put on when dogs are home alone. It also says that some owners put the channel on while working from home or cleaning the house. Professor Nicholas Dodman, chief scientist for DogTV, said that the channel is great for dog owners who want to try and reduce some of the behavior problems their pets can have when left alone. These problems could include barking a lot, destroying things or trying to get out of the house. 👉ArticleIf you've ever been worried about calling in sick to work, a new study says that you are not alone. A survey by OnePoll asked 2,000 employed Americans about the stress they felt when asking their bosses for time off work. It found that 58% of workers avoid calling in sick because they are worried about being criticized by their employer. The survey also found that 55% of US workers have to give their managers a reason for calling into work sick. Of that group, two in three said they feel that their bosses never believe their reasons for needing time off. Of the roughly 1,700 survey participants who can work from home, 68% said that they would work even when sick instead of taking the day off. These workers said they feel they should only take time off if they have COVID-19. Sixty-eight percent of people also said that they would work through illness because they "can't afford" to take a sick day. Some US states have laws that require workers to have paid sick leave from work, but there is no national law requiring it. 👉ArticleK-pop has gained international popularity in recent years, but it's not the only South Korean entertainment that's popular outside of the country. South Korean TV shows, often called K-dramas, now have a growing audience in the US. Streaming site Rakuten Viki has shows from South Korea — as well as other Asian countries — and subscribers from around the world. Its largest audience is from the US, 75% of which is non-Asian. Other streaming sites are also adding more South Korean shows. Apple TV+ is working on two Korean language projects, one based on the show Dr. Brain, and another on Min Jin Lee's book Pachinko. In 2021, Netflix is spending nearly $500 million to produce South Korean shows and has worked with major companies in the country, including Studio Dragon and JTBC. The awareness of K-dramas outside South Korea seems to be growing, said Joan MacDonald, a Forbes writer who covers entertainment from the country. "The number of people that contacted me in the last year and a half to say, 'Oh, I just discovered K-dramas, what do you recommend?' It's significant." Streaming services have made it easy to watch shows from other countries, but MacDonald believes one reason for the popularity of K-dramas is because they blend genres like K-pop does. She said that you could watch a TV show that "keeps changing genres all the way through." MacDonald says K-pop fans also try K-dramas because "a lot of K-pop stars are in dramas." 👉ArticleA team of designers in the US, called Wonder Substance, has developed a robotic chess set made of real wood with pieces that are able to move on their own. While online chess lets you play against and learn from people around the world, it isn't always as fun as playing with a real board. Wonder Substance's chessboard, Phantom, lets you play online while still giving you the experience of a real-life game. Phantom users can play against anyone else in the world, with their opponent either using an app or another Phantom board. The Phantom board is made with sensors that tell the board where the chess pieces are. When your opponent moves a piece, the same piece will move on your Phantom board. And of course, if they're playing with a board instead of an app, your moves will happen on their board too. If you don't want to use your hands, you can also just tell the board which piece to move and it will do it for you. For players who want to learn from famous games, the chessboard can play through over 100 famous chess matches for you to watch. And you can also play games against a chess program called Maia. 👉ArticleLondon's newest tourist attraction has disappointed visitors to the centre of the British capital. Designed by Dutch architecture company MVRDV, the Marble Arch Mound is a 25 meter artificial hill that offers views of Hyde Park, Oxford Street and other famous areas of London. City officials hope the attraction will help bring people back to the centre of London after more than a year of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, just a few days after it opened the Marble Arch Mound began offering refunds to tourists who were unhappy with their visit. Visitors compared the hill to a construction site, and said that it does not look like the pictures on the Marble Arch Mound website. A promised shop and café have not yet been finished. Westminster Council, which is in charge of the hill, have said that parts of the attraction "are not yet ready for visitors." They also said that anyone who booked a ticket during the first week that the attraction was open will be offered their money back, and a free ticket for another visit at a later date. 👉ArticleFrom America to Italy to South Korea, birthrates have been decreasing in many countries around the world. Since 2005, Japan has been doing international surveys every five years to try to learn what it can do to raise its own low birth rate. The most recent survey was done between October 2020 and January 2021. It included a total of about 4,400 people aged 20 to 49 in Japan, France, Germany and Sweden. People were asked if they thought it was easy to have and raise children in their country. In Japan, only 4.4% of people said it was "very easy" to have and raise children there. This compared to 25.5% in France, 26.5% in Germany and 80.4% in Sweden. Just 2.1% of people in Sweden said it was "very" or "somewhat" difficult to have and raise children there. But in Japan that figure was 61.1% — and this number has been rising over the last 10 years. When people were asked why they think it is easy to raise children in Japan, the top reason given was that the country is safe. In France and Germany, the top reason was good child care. Now about 30,000 people climb the mountain every year. It's thought of as the easiest of the world's tallest mountains to climb because you don't need any special skills or climbing equipment. But that doesn't mean it's easy. About 30% to 50% of climbers fail to get to the top. 👉ArticleCelebrities may live exciting lives, but sometimes we're reminded that they have bad days too. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise had a very bad day recently: he was filming a new movie in the UK when his car was stolen. The actor was in Birmingham to film the seventh Mission: Impossible movie when his $130,000 BMW X7 was stolen while it was parked outside the Grand Hotel Birmingham. Several thousand dollars of luggage was also in the car when it was stolen. Like something from the Mission: Impossible films, it's believed that the car was stolen by copying the signal from its electronic key. Cruise was lucky, though: police were able to quickly find the car because it had a tracking device. However, everything inside the car was already gone. Cruise had already caused a lot of excitement in the UK before his car was stolen. The actor has been seen filming at Grand Central shopping center in Birmingham, and a few days earlier, his helicopter landed in a family's garden. If you buy or sell something "for a song," you do so for very little money. This expression was first used in writing in 1596, at a time when people singing in the street were given coins worth a very small amount by those walking past — so their songs weren't worth very much. To "make a song and dance" about something means to act as though it's more important than it really is. A "song and dance" is a type of show, so to act in this way is to behave like a performer. To have "a song in one's heart" means to be extremely happy. Throughout the history of the English language, the heart was often thought of as the part of the body that controls our emotions, and this is the meaning of the word that the expression uses. For many people, a basic treehouse is still the way to go. Jim Brook, a 71-year-old grandfather from Colorado, said building a simple treehouse was a fun way to get his three grandsons to play outside. Nanci and Ethan Butler from Massachusetts built their own backyard treehouse too. However, theirs took three months, and is big enough for the Butlers and their two kids to sleep in. For those who don't want to build their own, treehouse rentals now have their own section on Airbnb. Places like the Mohicans Treehouse Resort in Ohio offer customers a chance to experience the outdoors but with modern amenities. The resort's nine treehouses are more like hotel rooms, with bathrooms, electricity and even air conditioning. Aaron Smith, who owns Treecraft Design-Build in Colorado, said business is booming. He said that there has been a big increase in people asking for backyard treehouses during the pandemic. The company's treehouses can be anything from basic structures costing about $10,000, to ones you could live in that cost half a million dollars. 一隻重達 36 公斤 的美洲獅， 竟然被人非法飼養在紐約市的公寓裡！🏙️😮 👉Article A 36-kilogram cougar has been removed from a New York City apartment where she was being kept illegally as a pet. The owner of the 11-month-old female cougar surrendered the animal, said Kelly Donithan of the Humane Society of the United States. The cougar, called Sasha, received vet care at the Bronx Zoo for a few days before being sent to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, officials said. Donithan said the removal showed how the exotic pet trade hurts animals and their owners, who often buy wild animals with the false belief that they will make good pets. She said Sasha was lucky because her owners understood that a wild cat couldn't live in an apartment and surrendered her. Basil Seggos of the Department of Environmental Conservation said that while cougars may look cute when young, they grow up to be very dangerous.
