You Reproduce What You Embody

Many labour under the misapprehension that the best way to change others is to control them; to command, to force them. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. The subtle art of influence is so much more powerful as an agent of change. John Newton, once a brutal slave trader, was deeply impacted by the kindness, faith, and persistence of Christians — especially those like William Wilberforce, who later led Britain's abolition movement. Newton eventually turned, became a pastor, and publicly condemned the slave trade he once profited from. His transformation, shaped by the goodness of others, in turn influenced Wilberforce and strengthened the moral cause that led to the abolition of slavery across the British Empire. One man's quiet goodness helped turn an evil man into a force for good. Newton went on to write the beautiful hymn, Amazing Grace. Everything changed for him through the light that the goodness of William Wilberforce (against huge opposition) shone into his life. And in turn, Newton reflected that back, strengthening Wilberforce's resolve to emancipate the slaves. Jesus put it like this: Matthew 5:16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven. It turns out that you reproduce what you embody. When the light of the love of God in Jesus Christ shines out of your heart into the darkness around you, let me tell you, it'll change the world. Light transforms people; it draws them in.
