यत् यदा, तत् तदैव

इयं कथा राजचोरयोः विषये अस्ति। चौर्यार्थम् आगतः चोरः राज्ञः प्राणरक्षणं करोति । तदर्थं राजा तस्मै दश सुवर्णनाणकानि उपायनत्वेन दत्त्वा प्रेषयति । अपि च चौर्यार्थं दश रजतनाणकानि दण्डत्वेन दातव्यम् इति दण्डयति च । कोषाधिकारी कुतूहलत्वेन चोरम् अपृच्छत् 'चौर्यार्थम् आगतेन त्वया चौर्यप्रवृत्तिं परित्यज्य राज्ञः प्राणरक्षणाय किमर्थम् उद्यतम्?’ इति । तदा चोरः 'परेषां प्राणरक्षणाय प्रयासः मानवमात्रस्य आद्यं कर्तव्यम् । तदेव मया कृतम् इति'  अवदत् । यत् यदा करणीयं तत् तदैव करणीयम् इति अचिन्तयत् कोषाधिकारी ।(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)This story concerns a king and a thief. A thief came intending to steal, but instead saved the king’s life. In gratitude, the king sent him ten gold coins as a gift, yet also fined him ten silver coins for coming with the intent to steal. Curious, the treasurer asked the thief: “Why did you abandon theft and choose to save the king’s life?” The thief replied: “To protect another’s life is the foremost duty of every human being. That is what I did.” The treasurer reflected: “What must be done should be done at the right time.”
