唐代竹枝词，最早是一种特有的歌谣，古代巴蜀间的民歌，人们在地里干完农活儿，总会吹笛鸣鼓，边唱边跳，抒发感情，赶走疲惫。诗人刘禹锡在夔州这个地方正好看到，特别喜欢，就向当地人们请教，填写了很多竹枝词，不过流传下来的也就十一首，这是其中之一。但也因为刘禹锡把民歌变成了文人诗体，对后代产生了很大的影响。
