St Laurence teaches us what true wealth is: it is not earthly wealth which fades or rots; it is the poor and needy. The more we give to them, the more we earn treasure in heaven. But we must do so with a disinterested heart: loving Christ in them, and them in themselves, and not merely ‘using’ them as a means to ‘buy’ heaven.

Jesus's compliment to the Canaanite woman, "Oh woman, great is your faith," is well earned. Despite several indications to the contrary, she insists on believing in Jesus's goodness and love. We too, must exercise trust in the face of prayers apparently unanswered.

We sometimes obsess over what we eat, and lose sight of the more important elements of our spiritual health. A similar thing happened to the Pharisees, and Jesus has advice for them we can apply to ourselves.

A Mystery of Light (MM) The transfiguration, truly a mystery of light! It is hard to understand. Jesus is glorious all the time, yet we recall this day when we begin to see Him as He really is in glory. The post resurrection appearances of the Lord are also mysterious. Their eyes are held then. Would we recognize Jesus today? He is truly among us! We meet Him in Sacrament, Word, and in the others as we serve. Faith is needed to penetrate the mystery and we ask for this gift and an increase of it.

Jesus isn't always the Jesus you want him to be. Let him be the Jesus that he is. Have faith. Only then can he work many mighty deeds in your life.

In a day and age where turning one's back on God has become so commonplace, much like how the Israelites turned away from God to worship an idol, the golden calf, Moses and St Ignatius stand as reminders for us to stay faithful to God. Amidst the revelry and the moral corruption of his day, St Ignatius develops this understanding of being a “soldier for Christ” as a way to encourage us today to become disciplined, to grow in virtue, to every day enter spiritual combat by our prayers, penances, and by how we live our lives. This first begins inside us, and then flows to our work, the people around us, and then the world.

Mt 13:44–46 Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

On the memorial of Sts Martha, Mary and Lazarus we meditate on how that home became a factory of saints by having Jesus at the centre. Our families are called, like the one of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, to be a home for Jesus, a place where He is loved and is among friends. Saints are the friends of God.

28-07-23 Yes to Life(DOH) Following Jesus who is Life, Way and Truth.

Jesus speaks out about those who glaze over when it comes to responding to his call: we want to be his disciples on purpose.

Jesus is sowing his seed in our hearts. Are we ready to receive it so that it might give fruit?

In getting their mother to ask Jesus on their behalf for ‘top jobs’ in his kingdom, James and John get it wrong in all sorts of ways: immaturely getting their mother to ask for them, getting wrong the nature of Christ's kingdom and what greatness is in his kingdom, seeing success in merely human terms, and more. The whole episode reveals a catalogue of errors. We also need to recognise the many ways we get it wrong. This self-knowledge is necessary for our spiritual growth.

In spite of his many miracles, the Pharisees and Scribes ask Jesus for a definitive sign to make his claims more evident. Sometimes we too disregard the favors of God in our life and in our disbelief ask or wish for some more definitive sign of God's reality. Jesus responds to the Scribes and Pharisees, and to us, by pointing towards the Resurrection, the greatest of his miracles.

As gardeners in the vineyard of the Lord, we may find ourselves exasperated by the ongoing presence of weeds. How do we foster hopeful patience, and avoid toxic pessimism when looking at the landscape of the Church and the world?

Mary Magdalene is an example of a lay woman who is redeemed from contact with evil, more faithful to Jesus than some of the apostles in the importnant moments of his death and resurrection, and sent to even preach the Gospel to the hierarchy. She can be a great model for many lay faithful who find themselves more visibly active than some of their priests and a role mode for how to preach the gospel to priests and even bishops.

Jesus said "If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men." If we get to know Jesus, we will see His call to be personal with others, especially those we want to bring along. Sacrifice is needed, and is great indeed. What Jesus desires is that the heart is engaged in this giving, that we get personal about it.

Jesus promises us rest for our souls when we shoulder his yoke but picking it up in the first place can be bloody hard.

19-07-23 Jesus Trinitarian Childlike Prayer (JB) God is our Father, we need to pray.

Ex 2:1-15a - God clearly took care of Moses and protected him from death as an infant and many, many dangers as an adult. God also gave Moses a very difficult mission and a heavy Cross to bear. Even though times may be difficult or be tempted to despair, let us remember and relive those moments in which God's presence and love and paternal care were especially clear to us.

This about the passage in Matthew 10:34–11:1 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. I explain the idea of struggle against being passive, not struggling, or ending up being a couch potato.

Jesus and Joseph, who both were in a position to exercise strict justice and exact retribution for the injustices they had suffered. However, they show great love and mercy instead. The good that ultimately comes from what they suffered makes their suffering worth it. So, let us see this as an invitation to understand that we should be more sorry for our sins and that we should rejoice more in the truth of God's infinite and unfathomable love and mercy for us.

“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.”

God had a plan with the patriarch Joseph and left him to be sold so that he could save his people from the famine. As Joseph himself says in the book of Genesis (45:8): «It was not you who sent me here, but God». God has always better plans. Let's learn the lesson: The best that can happen to you is that the Will of God is done.

To come to Jesus means to go out to people. The key to apostolate is a deep friendship with Jesus.

The feast of St Benedict gives us an opportunity to reflect on what we may have left behind to follow Jesus, or perhaps what he is calling us to leave behind now. Whatever it is - Jesus is worth it!

The two characters in the Gospel teach us that we need to have faith and hope in Jesus, no matter what

There is a knowledge of God which only children have, a knowledge of the Father which only Jesus has, and a peace which only comes from knowing ourselves and living as children of God. Jesus outlines the principal aspects of what we call ‘spiritual children’, which is relating to God as children relate to their parents. Only a childlike attitude of humble trust and simplicity will lead us to God and heaven.

At the end of Isaac's life, his son Jacob craftily steals Esau's identity in order to receive his Father's special blessing. Something similar happens to Christians, but resorting to identity theft is no longer necessary.

Matthew is called out of a “spell” of worldliness and self-absorption that shackles him, and embarks on a new adventure that will demand a full gift of himself. Are you ready to do the same??

Jesus casts out the demons from the possessed. He allows them to enter the swine. All these pigs rush into the sea of Galilee and drown themselves. Why? Perhaps they prefer death to demonic possession. A possible route toward that is curiosity about divination, the seeking of knowledge by communication with spirits, who turn out to be demons. We ask rather for a quelling of curiosity and the beautiful indwelling of the Trinity, which is no less than the divinization of the child of God.
