S02 EP08: Music Season with Nils Lofgren

For much of his professional rock & roll career, Nils Lofgren has been known as the lead guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band -- the guy who replaced Steven Van Zandt in 1984 and stayed on after Little Steven returned to the fold. Prior to the E-Street Band, Lofgren was a member of Neil Young's backing band Crazy Horse, and these associations have tended to dominate any mention of the guitarist's career, as any support for two legendary singer/songwriters would. But take Springsteen and Young off Lofgren's résumé, and he has an impressive, idiosyncratic cache in his own right, starting with the records he made with Grin, an acclaimed but underappreciated band from the late '60s, running through his own compositions with Crazy Horse, and then on a series of solo recordings that started with 1975's eponymous debut. Anchored with "Keith Don't Go," a tribute to the Rolling Stones guitarist that stands as one of rock's great love letters, that record earned good reviews, but his subsequent Cry Tough (1976), I Came to Dance (1977), and Night After Night (1977) performed better on the album rock charts, laying the foundation for a discography that stretched well into the new millennium, consisting of records made during downtime for the E-Street Band, but once he re-joined Crazy Horse in 2018, he managed to release such solo album as 2023's Mountains while simultaneously supporting both Springsteen and Young.Known through the years for his athletic prowess, and trampoline tricks, Nils Lofgren is an original in the rock althelics field - or as he refers to it - a "Rocklete!™".Video of Nils performing!!Websitehttps://www.nilslofgren.com/index.htmlThis podcast is kindly supported by Camera Museum of London, pre-owned Hasselblad specialists, and Tang Cigars, connoisseurs of Cuban cigars, located at 44 Museum Street LONDON WC1A 1LY. S07 EP07: Theremin Season with OoopopoiooO

OoopopoiooO was born in 2012 from the close encounter between two bizarre characters: Vincenzo Vasi and Valeria Sturba. Since their birth they have had an intense concert activity in Italy, Europe and the Americas. In 2015 their first album, with the same title, was released under Tremoloa Records, the label of the guitarist and producer Asso Stefana. In March 2019 Elettromagnetismo e Libertà was released. In addition to the theremin, an instrument of which they are both considered virtuosos and maximum exponents, in their sound playground you can find everything: violin, electric bass, keyboards, minisynths, toys, pieces of cardboard, rubber pigs, percussions, snare drums, suggestive voices, persuasive voices, terrifying voices. The instruments of all kinds distributed in two almost specular sets, the extensive use of loop stations and “played” electronic music bring the acoustic mass of this unusual duo to the levels of a small orchestra, capable of hosting all their parallel worlds in a sort of floating multiverse, which straddles pop and sound experimentation, often crossing “distant” artistic universes. In fact, their collaborations find space in the world of writing (Ermanno Cavazzoni, Stefano Benni), visual art (Cosimo Miorelli, Luigi Minguzzi, Massimo Ottoni, Frame by Frame Animation Studio), the soundtrack of silent films (in 2014 and 2018 they won the Rimusicazioni Festival), the independent and experimental music scene (Enrico Gabrielli and Calibro 35, Surgical Beat Bros, Luke Fishback – Lucky Dragons, Martin Benavides, Edoardo Marraffa, Sebastiano De Gennaro, Filippo Monico…)OoopopoiooO is a transversal project, not classifiable in any genre; their bizarre name, with the big O's on the sides, has appeared on the posters of the most disparate festivals: Young Jazz for Umbria Jazz, ROBOt Festival, Isole che Parlano, Verucchio Festival, B-classic (Tongeren, Belgium), Electromagnetica Theremin Fest (Santiago de Cile), Flussi, Dancity, Hai Paura del Buio?…Every concert of OoopopoiooO is an experience of sounds and visions, in which it is easy to get lost in dreamlike atmospheres and let yourself be lulled by impalpable sounds, but also to be transported by the rhythm and lightness of the songs.Website (in Italian)https://www.ooopopoiooo.comVideo of Podcast (excellent for demonstration of the Theremin)Videos of performances (see YouTube)Self-Portrait for three theremin!OoopopoiooO - Mandorle - La Tenda, Modena (2019)Shostakovich with theremin!
