Poor in Spirit: Why Strong Men Need Help | Matthew 5:3
What does Jesus mean when He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”?For a lot of men, three words are surprisingly difficult to say:I need help.We want to be capable. We want to solve problems, provide, protect, lead, and carry responsibility. Those are good things. But somewhere along the way, capability can quietly become self-sufficiency—and “I can handle this” can become “I don't need anybody.”Eventually, that can include God.In Episode 7 of Armed Disciple, we start with two very different shooters. One can't be taught because he thinks he already knows everything. The other is disciplined, hungry, and working hard—but eventually reaches the limit of what he can accomplish on his own. They look completely different. But both eventually have to admit the same thing:I can't get where I need to go by myself. And that isn't just a shooting problem. It's a human problem. We trace that problem all the way back to Adam in Genesis 3, where humanity reaches for independence from God. Then we move forward to the opening words of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where the King describes His Kingdom in exactly the opposite way:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3Being poor in spirit isn't weakness, passivity, or incompetence. It's recognizing our true condition before God.I can't save myself.I can't make myself righteous.I can't erase my own sin.I can't. He can. I need Him.In this episode, we'll talk about biblical masculinity, self-sufficiency, Adam's failure, Paul's strength in weakness, and why Christianity isn't another self-improvement program.Because ultimately, we don't just need someone to show us how to do better. We need a Savior. The shooter says, “Show me.”The sinner says, “Save me.”And the Kingdom belongs to people who know they need the King.SCRIPTURE IN THIS EPISODEMatthew 4:17Matthew 4:23–25Matthew 5:3Genesis 3:52 Corinthians 12:7–10Romans 3:23If this is your first time here, Armed Disciple is a show about firearms, competitive shooting, biblical manhood, discipleship, and what happens when those worlds collide.Stay front sight focused. What is a Man? | A Biblical Answer from Genesis
What is a man? There are plenty of voices willing to answer that question. Culture has an answer. Politics has an answer. Social media certainly has an answer. But what if we went back to the beginning and asked a different question:What did God create man to be?In Episode 6 of Armed Disciple, we go back to Genesis and look at God's original design for man—his purpose, his responsibility, and ultimately his failure in the Garden.Adam wasn't absent because he didn't know what God had said. He knew. But when the moment came, knowledge had to become obedience. And before we get too comfortable judging Adam, we should probably recognize something about ourselves:Life happens.Temptation comes.Pressure comes.Fear comes. And that's when we find out whether God's Word is something we just know… or something we're actually willing to live by.This episode also begins something bigger for Armed Disciple.Over the coming episodes, we're going to explore biblical manhood through the Beatitudes in Matthew 5—not as a checklist for becoming “more masculine,” but as Jesus' description of the character of a citizen of His Kingdom. Before we get there, though, we need to understand where man started, what went wrong, and why we desperately need the King.IN THIS EPISODE:• What does the Bible actually say a man is?• God's design for Adam in Genesis• Man's responsibility to work, protect, lead, and obey• What really happened in Genesis 3• Adam's failure under pressure• Why knowing God's Word isn't the same as living by it• What Adam's failure teaches Christian men today• Why biblical manhood ultimately points beyond Adam• Setting the stage for our study through the BeatitudesCHAPTERS:00:00 Defining Manhood Through Creation00:57 Welcome back02:09 Before the Fall03:11 Created with Purpose04:55 The First Relationship06:27 The Serpent07:38 The Lie08:30 Where is Adam09:32 When the Timer Starts10:48 There Eyes Were Opened11:40 Where Are You?12:22 The Blame Game13:10 Own the Miss14:10 What Actually Broke14:52 God Doesn't Leave15:45 Another Adam16:52 So What is a Man?18:02 Where Do We Go From Here?19:20 This Week's Challenge20:14 Next TimeABOUT ARMED DISCIPLEArmed Disciple is where firearms, competitive shooting, biblical manhood, discipleship, and faith collide.Whether we're talking about what happens when the timer goes off on a USPSA stage or what happens when pressure hits us in everyday life, the goal remains the same:Keep our eyes fixed on Christ.Front Sight Focused.Hebrews 12:2If this episode challenged or encouraged you, subscribe and share it with another man who needs to hear it.Music credit:Artist: Dan LebowitzTitle: A Dusty Road#ArmedDisciple #BiblicalManhood #WhatIsAMan #ChristianMen #Genesis #Discipleship #MensMinistry #ChristianPodcast #Faith #FrontSightFocused

Pressure Reveals | What Trigger Control Taught Me About Faith
Pressure has a way of telling the truth. On the range, the timer doesn’t create bad habits. It exposes the ones that were already there. A poor grip. Anticipation. A flinch. Trying to outrun your fundamentals.Life works the same way.Pressure doesn’t always create anger, fear, pride, bitterness, or the need for control.Sometimes it simply reveals what was already in the heart. In Episode 5 of the Armed Disciple Podcast, we use trigger control and competitive shooting to dig into a much deeper question:What do we do when pressure reveals something about ourselves that we don’t like? We’ll open the Bible to Luke 6, James 1, and Proverbs and look at what Scripture says about the heart, trials, steadfastness, trust, and spiritual growth.James tells us:“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”— James 1:2–3 ESVTesting reveals something. But in the hands of God, testing can also produce something. That’s the difference. The goal isn’t to pretend the miss didn’t happen.Study it.Learn from it.Ask what it revealed.Bring it to Christ. And then take the next faithful step.Because Christianity isn’t a self-improvement program. We aren’t trying to train ourselves into becoming people who no longer need Jesus.Spiritual maturity is realizing more and more just how desperately we need Him.Pressure doesn’t create character. Pressure reveals it.And sometimes what it reveals may be exactly where God wants to begin working.IN THIS EPISODE:• Trigger control under pressure• Why the timer exposes your actual training• What shooting competition can teach us about character• Luke 6:45 and what comes out of the heart• James 1:2–4 and the purpose of testing• Why you shouldn’t waste your misses—or your failures• Dry fire and the hidden repetitions of discipleship• The spiritual equivalent of a flinch• Proverbs 3:5–6 and trusting God when you can’t see the whole stage• Why Christianity is not self-improvement• Biblical strength, dependence, and the need for ChristIf this episode encouraged you, subscribe to Armed Disciple, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a comment:What has pressure revealed in your life lately—and what are you doing with it?Keep training.Keep growing.Stay front sight focused. And above all, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.Chapters:00:00 The Pursuit of Speed in Shooting00:56 Welcome02:48 The Easy Shot05:11 What Happens When Speed Arrives?06:29 Pressure Reveals08:33 The Target Doesn't Lie10:01 James and the Purpose of Testing11:54 Don't Waste the Miss13:14 Dry Fire and the Hidden Work14:58 Guard Your Heart15:54 The Flinch18:06 This Isn't Self-Improvement20:00 Where the Analogy Breaks21:43 Practical Challenge22:45 ClosingMusic credit:Artist: Dan LebowitzTitle: A Dusty Road#ArmedDisciple #PressureReveals #ChristianMen #BiblicalManhood #Discipleship #ChristianPodcast #Faith #Jesus #USPSA #CompetitiveShooting #TriggerControl #James1

Aim Small, Miss Small | A Biblical Approach to Growth
Last episode, I completely bombed a USPSA match. This time, we're talking about what comes next.Failure can expose weaknesses in our shooting—bad grip, inconsistent presentation, poor dot discipline, or fundamentals that disappear under pressure. But once we've honestly identified what went wrong, trying to fix everything at once can become its own problem.Instead, focus on the next faithful step.In this episode of the Armed Disciple Podcast, we look at how deliberate training, honest self-evaluation, and the shooting principle “aim small, miss small” can teach us something much bigger about following Jesus. Then we dig into Philippians 3:12–14 (ESV) and Paul's words:“I press on…”Paul wasn't imprisoned by yesterday's failures—and he wasn't living off yesterday's victories. His focus remained on Christ and what was ahead.Maybe your bad match didn't happen on a shooting range.Maybe it happened at home.Maybe you lost your temper.Maybe you fell back into an old sin.Maybe you've stopped spending time with God.Maybe the distance between the man you are and the man God is calling you to become feels enormous.Don't try to cross that entire distance today.Ask one question:“Lord, what is my next faithful step?”Then take it.Faithful steps, repeated over time, become a faithful life.🎯 In this episode:• Learning honestly from failure• The difference between shooting and deliberate training• Why trying to fix everything at once doesn't work• “Aim small, miss small” as a philosophy for growth• Why success—and failure—should stay small• Philippians 3:12–14 and what Paul means by “press on”• Why our confidence is ultimately in Christ, not our performanceFaith. Firearms. Freedom.Stay Front Sight Focused.#ArmedDisciple #ChristianMen #USPSA #CompetitiveShooting #ChristianPodcast #Discipleship #Philippians3Music credit:Artist: Dan LebowitzTitle: A Dusty Road

I Bombed My USPSA Match — What Failure Taught Me
I completely bombed my last USPSA match. Bad stages, missed fundamentals, sloppy transitions, lost stage plans—and one of the worst stage scores I’ve ever shot. So instead of hiding it, we’re breaking it down.In this episode of the Armed Disciple Podcast, I review footage from my latest USPSA Carry Optics match and look at what actually went wrong. From slow transitions and missed reload opportunities to losing dot discipline and completely abandoning a stage plan, this match exposed something important:Practice shows you what you can do. Pressure shows you what you actually own. That lesson goes far beyond competition shooting. We’ll look at all five stages, including a brutal 9% finish on my final stage, and talk about grip consistency, vision, dot discipline, transitions, stage planning, and why trying to outrun your current skill level usually ends badly.More importantly, I came away from this match realizing that I need a repeatable pre-stage routine—one that gets my mind, shooting fundamentals, and faith pointed in the same direction before the buzzer ever sounds.Because whether you're shooting a USPSA stage or walking through a difficult season of life, sometimes the answer isn't trying to conquer everything at once. It's simply taking the next faithful step.Bring glory to God on the next target. Then the next one. Then the next.Aim small. Miss small. Keep the goal small—and when failure comes, learn from it and move forward. If you're interested in USPSA, competition shooting, firearms training, personal discipline, and becoming a more faithful follower of Jesus Christ, welcome to Armed Disciple—where we're forever Front Sight Focused.Chapters02:10 Lessons from a Disappointing Match04:32 Stage 1 – Classifier06:17 Stage 207:28 Stage 308:35 Stage 409:41 Stage 511:09 Looking Back at the Footage13:10 Develop a Repeatable Pre-Stage Routine14:24 Focus on the Next Faithful Step15:54 Check Out the ArmedDisciple.com Store16:37 ConclusionI’m shooting a CZ Shadow 2 Carry in Carry Optics as I continue working toward becoming a better competition shooter and reaching USPSA B Class. Front Sight Focus | Armed Disciple Podcast | Episode 1
Front Sight Focus | Episode 1What does front sight focus have to do with following Jesus?Every marksman knows that accuracy comes from focusing on the front sight rather than becoming distracted by the target. Hebrews 12:2 reveals a remarkably similar principle for the Christian life: fixing our eyes on Jesus. In this inaugural episode of the Armed Disciple Podcast, Kevin Tooley explores how a foundational principle of marksmanship becomes a powerful illustration of biblical discipleship. We'll discuss why our focus matters, how distractions pull us away from Christ, and what it practically means to live with our eyes fixed on Him.Whether you're an experienced shooter, a new believer, or someone simply seeking to grow closer to Christ, this episode will challenge you to examine what—or who—has your attention.Scripture:• Hebrews 12:2If this episode encouraged you, please follow the Armed Disciple Podcast, leave a review, and share it with someone who could use the reminder to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus.New episodes every Friday."Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith." — Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)
