486: "What did worrying ever do for me?" Days of Creation 2026, Part 7/12
Today we discuss mechanisms for choosing our mindset, especially during challenging times. In this episode I introduce a question that’s been really helpful for me: “What would help me return to center after witnessing all of this?”This question helps me recognize when I’m trying to control circumstances beyond what I can actually control, and bring my focus instead to centering practices, like drawing, breathing, or enjoying small pleasures. We discuss identity, too. My example is of overcoming a 30-year identity issue related to being told I wasn’t an artist, and leading to something exciting! My upcoming solo art exhibition in October.Let’s remember that we get to choose… And part of that is about not letting others’ opinions change our sense of self.Nuts and Bolts* Read about – and play along at – the Days of Creation 2026 game (that this episode is about) by clicking here.* Here is my conversation from a few weeks ago with pleasure activist and violist Meena Bhasin.* Here is July’s workshop signup link, called Let's Go Outside – Channeling What Your Soul Most Wants to Create. You can find out more about it here.* For just about a year now I've been leading an online community for leaders who are learning to give ourselves the same love and care that we are so accustomed to giving to others. 485: "This is what it would look like if everybody just felt safe," with Kathryn Nicolai
Today I am here with Kathryn Nicolai, creator of the wonderful sleep podcast Nothing Much Happens, the amazing mindfulness podcast First This, and the lively and delightful podcast Stories from the Village of Nothing Much. Kathryn'new book, On the Street Where You Live, comes out next month, in July 2026. Here is her Instagram, a great place to see what’s going on with Kathryn and her creations!Kathryn is intentionally cultivating joy. She began drawing earlier this year, despite having aphantasia (lack of visual imagery – no sound, colours, shapes or forms) and is loving the playful creativity. She’s taking online courses and filling her walls with new designs. In our conversation today, Kathryn reflects on letting go of perfectionism and claiming the identity of ‘writer’ simply because she chooses to.How she got hereKathryn once believed she wasn’t creative, surrounded by artistic friends and family. Over time she learned creativity is a practice. She’s now 400+ episodes into Nothing Much Happens, on her second book and running three podcasts.Growing up in Flint, Michigan, she told herself bedtime stories from the age of four. After 20 years teaching yoga/meditation, storytelling was a more accessible way to help people rest and regulate.Kathryn has known sound designer Bob Wittersheim for some time and when she started working with him on Nothing Much Happens, he worked for free. Kathryn describes his compassionate and protective energy and credits him with grounding her.Characters and perspectivesKathryn realised early on that all her stories lived in the same universe. Writing in first person helps listeners to ‘pull the story around them’ and she includes a broad range of representative characters. Her upcoming book expands this catalogue of characters. She is now experimenting with a more eagle‑eyed view of the village while keeping her intuitive, centered style. She wants to stay inspired and genuine.InclusivityAs a queer woman, Kathryn values creating spaces where everyone feels safe. We discuss the joy of stories where characters live freely and fully.Anorexia and OrthorexiaKathryn speaks openly about her eating disorders, now seven years into recovery. She reflects on the years lost and the creativity gained since healing; she wants to model recovery.Recovery and identityHere is a lovely moment in our conversation – I share how First This supported me during a period of reclaiming my name and intuition. Kathryn emphasises that creators often help people they’ll never meet. She quotes the Regina Spektor song ‘Better’, with the line ‘If you never say your name out loud to anyone they can never ever call you by it’. Kathryn describes bodily awareness, connection, her dog beside her, and the joy of this conversation as what feels present for her in this moment.I’m filled with gratitude, to have had this conversation and to be able to bring it to you.Invitations to Play with Kay* I’m offering online workshops throughout 2026, and an in-person retreat here in Maine in September - see more at https://kaylockkolp.com/events* If community is something you value, consider joining Dreamers & Doers. 483: "Pleasure is a birthright," with Violist and Pleasure Activist Meena Bhasin
I'm excited to bring you today's deep, beautiful, very warm and loving conversation.Today's guest, Mheena Bhasin, is a violist, mother of two and Pleasure Activist living in Noe Valley, San Francisco. Her work centers the arts as a vital part of civic life and community wellbeing.Mheena feels deep gratitude for her life, her family and her community. She has co-created a concert series with her husband, that brings world-class artists into neighbourhood spaces and sees music as a vehicle for community care and connection.Programming includes concerts for neurodivergent youth, lunchtime town-square performances, and wellbeing concerts.Pleasure activism is integrated into her work, especially with women, through music, movement, meditation and love as a source of energy. How she got hereMheena began her training in music at the age of four. Her early classical training was intense and rule-bound. Music was always her way of feeling deeply and now she teaches others to access that same inner wellspring.About ten years ago music had become a source of anxiety and pressure and Mheena experienced burnout. Moving from New York to San Francisco gave her a clean slate to rebuild her relationship with music. She learned to pause, reset and choose what to return to. Pregnancy and early motherhood planted the seeds for her current work. How did pleasure activism come into her life?Mheena was inspired by adrienne maree brown’s book Pleasure Activism and Audre Lorde’s essay Uses of the Erotic, which helped her understand that pleasure is a birthright, not a hierarchy or commodity.Pleasure is not escapism, but feeling safe, beautiful and fully alive. Society often misinterprets pleasure as indulgence or hypersexuality, when it can be as simple as sensory presence and love.Mheena doesn’t label herself an activist but sees activism as putting a stake in the ground, naming your values, being willing to be seen and going first so others feel permitted to follow. At the time of our recording, Mheena was on day 11 of a gratitude practice. She encourages building a toolbox of small, accessible ways to return to love and aliveness to yourself. On her website, www.Mheenabhasin.com, she offers a free pleasure meditation and a 75-minute meditation practice for those who’d like to go deeper.Mheena welcomes conversations with anyone exploring pleasure in their life.Hope you enjoy this one!Invitations to Play with Kay* I’m offering online workshops throughout 2026, and an in-person retreat here in Maine in September - see more at https://kaylockkolp.com/events* If community is something you value, consider joining Dreamers & Doers. Greetings from 1987!
I’ve been on retreat, and I learned lots.. sharing with you today. Here’s what the Zoom Summary had to say about today’s episode, I think it’s pretty spot-on.Kay shared her experience taking a week-long digital detox, disconnecting from the internet entirely to immerse herself in a retreat-like experience reminiscent of 1987. During this time, she discovered how frequently she relied on the internet for information and how many automatic digital habits she had developed. Kay discussed specific examples of how she adapted, including visiting an art museum to learn about framing principles from a curator, exploring a local bookstore, and continuing work on her memoir by writing in a physical notebook rather than on a computer. She reflected on the benefits of reduced digital distractio for herself, including increased focus for creative work and a return to more intentional human connection. Kay emphasized the importance of taking brave steps toward living in ways that feel authentic, noting that people don't want us to break ourselves in service to them and that doing what's best for ourselves in integrity is ultimately beneficial for everyone involved.I am wishing you well - see you next time!Art Creativity & Wellbeing is a reader-supported publication. I am SO excited to share this one with you! Here is how Zoom summarized our conversation, I think it did a pretty good job..Melina shared her personal mental health journey, including struggles with depression and anxiety during high school, hospitalizations, and how she found healing and purpose through her work with Rebels for Peace after completing an internship there. She discussed how the organization helped her feel supported and valued, leading to a permanent role where she now helps train new interns and facilitate programs for youth. The conversation explored themes of self-care, family dynamics around mental health, and the importance of letting others grow independently rather than trying to solve all their problems. 479: "We need to stop separating ourselves from each other" with Rebel for Peace Devlin Chestang
As we go through this magical series of conversations with the leaders of the Rebels for Peace, I just keep feeling more and more inspired… Hope you enjoy this one! Here’s the Zoom summary…In this heartfelt conversation, Kay interviewed Devlin Chestang, the Lead Youth Facilitator at Rebels for Peace, about his personal journey and his work with young people in Chicago. Devlin shared his challenging upbringing, including growing up in a single-parent household and dealing with undiagnosed ADHD, which led to him being labeled as a "bad kid" in school. He described how a close friend's death in 2021 inspired him to pursue his creative passions, leading to a career in multimedia and eventually to his current role at Rebels for Peace. Devlin discussed his approach to teaching and mentoring young people, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for them to express themselves and overcome the stigmas they face. He also shared his personal philosophy of "knowing myself, trusting my intuition, and taking accountability," which he uses to navigate his busy life balancing his work at Rebels with his own creative projects. The conversation concluded with Devlin offering insights on how society can better support young people, including reducing assumptions, combating consumerism, and breaking down labels that separate individuals.Nuts & BoltsFind Devlin in LinkedIn by clicking here.Find Rebels for Peace in Instagram by clicking here, and in Facebook by clicking here.Next up: Rebels for Peace Lead Trainer, Lead Facilitator, and Lead Bilingual Facilitator Melina Navarette.Thank you for being here Invitations to Play* I’m offering online workshops throughout 2026, and an in-person retreat here in Maine in September - see more at https://kaylockkolp.com/events* If community is something you value, consider joining Dreamers & Doers. 477: "Love yourself. That's how you create something magnificent," with Rebels for Peace Executive Director Prince Jimmar
WHAT a conversation we get to experience today! Rebels for Peace Co-Founder and Executive Director Prince Jimmar joins me to share deeply about his own journey, and how connected his journey is with the beautiful organization he now leads. Growing up, Prince felt cast into roles that were the opposite of how he knew himself to be. Hearing him share about breaking free of those roles, it becomes clear how inevitable Rebels for Peace was. How inevitable that Prince found a way to serve and support from his full and open heart.Over the coming weeks we’ll get to spend time with several of Prince’s Rebels for Peace team (we heard last time from Program Coordinator and Lead Facilitator Logan Griggs-Mitchell), and we will wind up the series with a Roundtable. 475: Verbs to help us reclaim and reconnect with ourselves
Once I began reflecting on the verbs that got me into trouble as a kid, I got curious about two things:First, how might these verbs show me myself as I am now?And second, what are your verbs?Zoom Summary:In this episode of Art, Creativity, and Wellbeing, Kay Lock Kolp discussed the concept of identifying and examining "verbs" as a way to understand behavior, curiosity, and interests. Drawing from her experience as an early childhood educator and personal reflections on her health journey, Kay explained how focusing on verbs can help people reconnect with activities that bring joy and well-being. She shared how certain behaviors that were once seen as problematic, such as talking excessively or creating art, can be reclaimed as positive aspects of life. Kay announced a series of upcoming workshops focused on various themes including favorite verbs, creativity, and well-being, with the first workshop "A Few of Your Favorite Verbs" scheduled for April 27th.InvitationsUpcoming workshop: A Few of Your Favorite VerbsLearn more and register at my events page.Come to the retreat that I’m hosting in SeptemberOr, hear more about itCome be in company with some like-minded soulsConnect with me to talk about coaching or facilitationOr, apply to work 1-1 with meThank you for being here with me. 473: Aliveness, Part 4
3 A’s Framework for AlivenessKay discussed the final portion of a series on aliveness, focusing on the “3 A’s” framework which includes awareness, acceptance, and agency. She explained how agency represents growth that continues beyond these stages, creating a spiral of ongoing development and self-understanding. Kay mentioned that the podcast, which has over 470 episodes, is approaching its 11th birthday in May and is available on the Substack platform.Agency and Feeling AliveKay discussed the concept of agency and its relationship to feeling alive, explaining how the words “disconnected,” “exhausted,” and “fearful” represent states before having awareness, acceptance, and agency respectively. She outlined the three components of agency as courage, choice, and creativity, using examples like a woodpecker’s creative problem-solving and the idea that people always make their best choice at any moment. Kay encouraged listeners to reflect on times when they demonstrated courage, made choices, or acted creatively, emphasizing that these actions are fundamental to experiencing agency and feeling alive.Agency and Control Diagram DiscussionKay discussed the opposite side of a diagram representing missing agency, focusing on feelings of overwhelm, paralysis, and suffering that arise when individuals don’t feel in control. She encouraged participants to reflect on when they feel most agency and invited them to use the chart as a tool for self-reflection when facing challenges. Kay shared a personal example of how the diagram helped her during a morning walk, demonstrating how it can provide clarity and guidance in navigating difficult situations.Dynamic Aliveness and Money PerspectivesKay discussed the dynamic nature of aliveness and shared insights from the book “Love Money, Money Loves You,” which describes money as beings that observe and facilitate human requests. Kay noted how people often panic when positive changes begin to happen, thinking they cannot handle the new experiences, but emphasized that they actually can manage these changes. The discussion concluded with an invitation for the audience to use the series for personal growth and experiencing life.Workshop and Community AnnouncementsKay announced plans to offer a workshop on the “3 A’s to feel alive” later in spring or summer 2026. She invited listeners to join her Dreamers and Doers community and mentioned that while her one-to-one coaching practice is currently full, interested parties can join a waiting list by responding to a series of questions. Kay also announced an upcoming series featuring interviews with the leadership of Rebels for Peace, a youth-led initiative in Chicago.Invitations from MeCome to the retreat that I’m hosting in SeptemberOr, hear more about itCome be in company with some like-minded soulsConnect with me to talk about coaching or facilitationEnjoy some love from the pinesLove, KayArt Creativity & Wellbeing is a reader-supported publication. 472: Aliveness, Part 3
In Part 3 of our series on feeling Alive, we explore the second of the three A's: Acceptance.Hope you enjoy this one!Zoom Summary:The Three A’s to Feeling AliveKay discussed the second installment of a series focusing on the three A’s to feel alive, following awareness with acceptance. Kay emphasized the importance of personalization in learning, encouraging participants to engage with the content in a way that works best for them rather than adhering to a strict structure. Kay then transitioned to discussing the concept of awareness, inviting participants to reflect on its meaning for themselves.Venn Diagram of Aliveness ConceptsKay discussed a Venn diagram about aliveness, explaining that movement through the diagram starts with awareness and then moves to acceptance. She noted that the word “disconnected” was near the awareness circle and “exhausted” was near the acceptance circle, suggesting a connection between being disconnected and lack of awareness, and between exhaustion and acceptance.Radical Acceptance Concepts DiscussionKay discussed the concept of radical acceptance, explaining how it involves allowing circumstances to be as they are rather than trying to control them. She outlined three qualities of acceptance: “own business minding” (practicing appropriate involvement in others’ lives), curiosity, and trust.Own Business Minding Concept DiscussionKay discussed the concept of “own business minding,” which involves understanding and accepting one’s own truth while letting go of control over others’ actions. She emphasized the importance of acceptance over judgment, referencing Walt Whitman’s idea that curiosity is better than judgment. Kay encouraged participants to reflect on their own experiences related to these concepts and invited them to share their thoughts via email.Components of Acceptance DiscussionKay discussed the components of acceptance, which include curiosity about someone’s experience, open-mindedness, and trust. Kay emphasized that trusting can be challenging due to fears of betrayal or misplacement of trust, but emphasized that acceptance involves embracing reality as it is rather than wishing it to be different.Acceptance and Aliveness ConceptsKay discussed the concept of acceptance as part of a series on aliveness and agency. Choosing How I Show Up for My Body: Days of Creation 2026, Part 2/12
What an interesting podcasting experiment, to return to the same subject matter once each month and see what shows up. I see progress with strengthening my muscles of staying with what's aligned, and of remembering that I can give my body feelings of safety and love, no matter the environment that I find myself in.Also - I am hosting an in-person retreat on a beautiful lake here in Maine in September! It is six days, beginning Thursday, 17 September to Wednesday, 23 September. The theme is Grown-up Summer Camp. It's an antidote to the stress, the overwhelm, the burnout that is so prevalent right now as we grown-ups work to find solutions for what's wrong in our society.Stay tuned for more info on that, I am so excited to be able to offer it out. 462: Cultivating a Positive Money Mindset, Part 1
I HAD NO IDEA how negative my money mindset used to be. Lack was the word that best describes it.Over several years I’ve opened more and more to feeling abundance.Even with all that growth, 2025 blew the absolute doors off of any abundance mindset I’d ever had.Between the dream home and property my life partner and I now live on, and the up-leveling of service that I have been able to provide with my better money mindset, both as a coach and also creatively, I simply have one thing to say:If I can do it… You can too.I’m taking you into how, with a multipart series on cultivating a positive money mindset.Today we start with two important questions. I’d love to hear your responses to each of them, and your questions about cultivating this mindset too.But the key person who will hear you, is you.So open up the notes app on your phone or find yourself a journal, grab a cup of tea and your favorite blanket, and let’s hop in!Write to me at this link with questions and commentsAnd/orSubscribe to the newsletter form of this podcast so that future episodes land right in your inboxThank you for being here! 461: Three Questions for a Great 2026
Happy new year! For this episode I share three questions that have been super helpful for me in envisioning a wonderful 2026. I share my responses to them… With such curiosity about you. I wonder how you would answer these questions? Here are the questions:1. These next two come from my conversations with my AI thinking partner:“What does 2026 wish for you to remember about your own aliveness – especially in the quieter, slower, or less certain moments?”“What felt newly possible for you in 2026 – something that once lived only in your imagination, but that this year brought into form, presence, or even just tangible steps forward?”I hope they help you create a really wonderful coming year!Come Play a Game with MeToday I share about Days of Creation 2026, a way to "proactively build your coming year.” Click here for the post where you can download your complimentary copy of the Game Book and then we can play together!Come Be in Good CompanyLast year I founded Dreamers & Doers, a group that has grown into a really wonderful and quite magical place. 459: What does it take for you to allow ease into your life?… Quickie Self-Care Practice #5
On 23 December 2022 I sustained a head injury that took me many many months to recover from. I spent half the following year in physical therapy supporting my eyes to work properly again. The head injury permanently changed how I engage with print and reading. It had one other, very beneficial, effect: at the hospital I was told “You need lots of rest. If you want to get truly better from this you must take it easy.”It was two days before Christmas. How in heck was I going to “take it easy” two days before Christmas? For the first time in a very long time, I did. The ease that that brought into my life made it one of the most pleasant Christmases in years.Ease. That’s what we’re talking about today.I share a quickie self-care practice that can help us remember that there’s such a thing in the world as ease, and that maybe we can allow some of that into our experience.I also bring a question for you:What does it take for you to allow ease into your life?I would love to hear. 454: Kay's Universal Laws of Human Dynamics, and where they might come in handy in your life
Greetings friend! I'm geeking out a little bit today on something that's been both a passion of mine and my professional work for more than three decades: human dynamics, the study of how humans interact with each other. We human beings are fascinating creatures. We can seem very unpredictable to someone who’s not inside ourselves. We can even seem unpredictable to ourselves at times.Over the last several months I have reflected on and developed two Universal Laws of Human Dynamics. They are based on my work over the decades as an educator and coach – there's been lots of opportunity to observe humans over all of this time – plus the many years of dedicated learning that I started with as an undergrad and continued with into my graduate degree. These two Universal Laws invite looking at our neighbors and ourselves through a different lens, one that you might find extremely useful in interacting with others.Hope you enjoy this one!Invitations for You* I am offering an art sale at my website! Through Friday, 5 December, use coupon code GRATEFUL2025 to get 50% off your purchase over $200. I’m adding more items throughout the sale and I’m even experimenting with offering prints of my art for the first time ever. So if you’d like to add to your collection… or enhance somebody else’s… Visit kaylockkolp.com/art. What fun!* I’ve been growing a group community over these last few months. It’s called Dreamers & Doers. The people in this group – and I include myself in this – have been enjoying the community as a place to take a breath and be in good company. To feel understood and loved.
