Your culture, your relationships, your visual surroundings will all have an influence on you AND your art (if you let it). ☁️ Like the podcast? You’ll love the Patreon. Join our Artsy Friends Patreon group for exclusive videos.Selling art online, in person, or anywhere in between is a task you actively do. You’re not selling art because you’re not SELLING it to people. You’re not marketing. Making the value clear. Telling the backstory. Showing the price. To sell art every day, you have to put in effort. Artists don’t like to hear it, but this is what takes you from hobbyist to full time artist. Small beginnings and messy middles are more than stepping stones on the way to the top. This period likely takes up the majority of your art journey. Which is why you shouldn't wait until you've "made it" to start photographing, writing about, and documenting your progress. There are tangible reasons to document and share your artist journey too: building an audience, fostering connection, and of course, nostalgia. 52: Three focus areas of successful artists (in order)

The order you do things in matters. Hindsight is a clear 20/20 vision and looking back, my art journey moved a lot slower because I focused on marketing before focusing on my product. In this episode of the Artsy Friends Podcast, we're reviewing the three focus areas of any artist in business: product, marketing, and delivery. In that order. ☁️Need to go back and refine your product? Elements of Art Style is open now! Price goes up on March 15th, so don't hesitate. ☁️Like the podcast? 51: Make art worth talking about

There's no such thing as bad press. But the best press is free. And for artists, word of mouth is the most top-tier advertising you could ever hope for. Getting people talking about your artwork, sharing it with each other, and making commentary about it is the fastest way to get "press." Especially in the age of digital media and going viral, which makes sharing artwork much easier than it was in previous generations. But it's more than advertising. It's also making work that is meaningful, impactful, and moving. Shallow gimmicks are only worth mentioning for a moment. Deeper art is worth debating over for a century. Let's talk about how we can make art that achieves all of this. 49: Decide to cut off your options

In 2018 there was a moment where I decided I would make being an artist my career. This wasn't the same day I realized I could make money with art; it wasn't the same day I quit my job. It was it's own moment, filled with bitterness and jealousy. But without that experience, I would never have reached where I am today: a full-time artist and crafter with my own home studio. Have you made the decision to make art your career? Or are you still one foot out the door? You've got to have a home base for making the transaction. Are you using a self-designed website? A marketplace platform like Etsy? Maybe a print-on-demand situation like Redbubble? 19: Being an artist should feel easy + what to do if it doesn't

Full-time or part-time artistry should feel easy. Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life, right? In this episode I feature an older video recording that digs into the topic of effort, making work of your hobby, relationships, and mindset around need vs want. I also lay out 3 major things to tweak if you're feeling like being an artist is actually really hard for you AND when to know if it's time to give up art as a career. 18: Should you make political artwork?

If you're expressing yourself fully, chances are you've made political art. But as a working artist, should you? In this episode we talk about my experience with social commentary paintings, overtly political topics in art, how it affected my business, and how it changed the way I viewed my own creativity. We also talk about what it means to include political subject matter as part of your official art style. Dive right in, folks, we're getting dirty in this one.
