The Argentine anthropologist and cultural studies scholar, who grew up in Germany, analyses the dangers of globalised, digital capitalism in the wake of the attacks of 11 September 2001 on the Twin Towers in New York. Fascist conformity is taking hold amidst the loss of global cultural diversity, driven by the total commodification of all areas of life and experience. The destruction of humanity does not come with the loud bang of an atomic bomb, but creeps in on tiptoe as the gradual dispossession of all individuality. 🎓 Birgit Mahnkopf im Gespräch mit Christoph Burgmer. Birgit Mahnkopf arbeitete an der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht in Berlin. Sie ist Mitglied im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat von attac Deutschland und im Kuratorium des Institus für Solidarische Moderne. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die ökonomischen, politischen und sozialen Dimensionen der Globalisierung sowie europäische und internationale Politik. In diesem ersten Teil erörtert sie zunächst die Veränderungen der Arbeitswelt in der Globalisierung seit den 70er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. She is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of attac Germany and of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Solidarity-based Modernity. Her work focuses on the economic, political and social dimensions of globalisation, as well as European and international politics. In this first part, she begins by discussing the changes in the world of work brought about by globalisation since the 1970s. 🎓 Die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 veränderten nicht nur das globale Staatengefüge nachhaltig, sie veränderten vorallem die US-amerikanische Demokratie bis in die Gegenwart. Es zeigte sich, dass die amerikanische Verfassung nicht geeignet war, die amerikanische Gesellschaft vor dem Abbau der Bürgerrechte zu schützen, dass die Vereinten Nationen zu schwach waren, die unilaterale amerikanische Aussenpolitik einzudämnmen und sich die amerikanischen Bündnispartner in der NATO, angesichts der Billiardeninvestionen der USA in militärische Aufrüstung, als abhängige und einflusslose Vassallen Washingtons erwiesen. Diese in einer Demokratie bislang einzigartige politische Machtfülle, konzentriert auf den amerikanischen Präsidenten, bestimmt bis in die Gegenwart die amerikanische Politik. George W. Bush, der 43. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, stellte dazu alle notwendigen Weichen. Peter Kreysler erkundet in seiner Reportage, wie es George W. Bush gelang, aus der amerikanischen Demokratie mit ihren checks und balances ein autoritäres, demokratiefeindliches Staatsgebilde zu formen. It became apparent that the US Constitution was not equipped to protect American society from the erosion of civil rights, that the United Nations was too weak to curb unilateral US foreign policy, and that, in the face of the US’s quadrillion-dollar investments in military rearmament, America’s NATO allies proved to be dependent and powerless vassals of Washington. This concentration of political power – unprecedented in a democracy to date – centred on the American President continues to shape American politics to this day. George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, set the course for this. In his report, Peter Kreysler explores how George W. Bush succeeded in transforming American democracy, with its checks and balances, into an authoritarian, anti-democratic state structure.
