This Is Why I Drink... Coconut Water with Nick Rado
In this latest episode of This Is Why I Drink... with Ben Rice, Ben invites New Zealand comedian Nick Rado to share his favorite beverage at his favorite spot to drink it.Since Nick was simply visiting Sacramento, CA, he decided to pick a spot he'd like to drink his beverage of choice, coconut water. And that choice...was Folsom Prison. But since that's a museum, Ben upped the danger by selecting the active California State Penitentiary, located in Folsom, CA. So we camped out across the street, with the beautiful Folsom Dam behind us, to record this episode about true crime, coconuts, advertising, and Nick's attempts to break in... to the American comedy market.THIS EPISODE IS ALSO AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE, if you wish to watch us imbibe this sacred beverage on such sacred ground. https://youtu.be/33CKu2_r0i8You can find out so much more about Nick Rado and his comedy, radio, and podcast adventures on IG @nickradocomedyYou can learn more about this podcast, This Is Why I Drink... with Ben Rice, the original podcast Barley & Me, Ben Rice, and Ben Rice's comedy and comedy shows on IG @barleyandmepod or at www.barleyandmepod.comIntro Music: "Functional Alcoholism" by Be Brave Bold Robot (@bebraveboldrobot)Interstitial Music: "JamRoc" by Breez (@breeztheartist)Logo by Jaclyn Weiand

This Is Why I Drink... Hazy IPA with CJ of The Friendship Podcast
Host Ben Rice chats with fellow podcaster (and musician!) CJ of The Friendship Podcast literally over Slice Beer Co and Old Town Pizza Lincoln (shouts to both for hosting us!) and a pint of Kessel Run Krusher, as we delve into his recent transition to drumming from his reed/brass beginnings, the status of TFP's reunion, showing up to SisQo's house parties, mechanical keyboards, why we podcast in general, the sound of modern metal records, as well as, obviously, why a hazy IPA from Slice is his beverage of choice. And you know we covered so much more ground, because that's what we do for a "living."Be on the lookout for the video version of this episode on YouTube! I fixed the issue from last episode but it's 2am, so give me some time to do the actual edit, please!Again, thank you to Slice Beer Co (@slicebeerco) and Old Town Pizza Lincoln (@otplincoln) for having us and letting us use your space on such short notice, and for delivering killer beer and pizza for years. Thanks to CJ (@g0dcomplex) for popping on the pod - be sure to follow his bands Chemical State (@chemicalstate916) and Dreamdebt (on YouTube only! @dreamdebt) and listen to the extensive back catalogue of The Friendship Podcast (@thefriendshippodcast)You can find out more about host Ben Rice, Barley & Me, This Is Why I Drink..., and his comedy (shows) @barleyandmepod or at www.barleyandmepod.comIntro Music: "Functional Alcoholism" by Be Brave Bold RobotInterstitial Music: "JamRoc" by BreezLogo by Jaclyn Weiand

This Is Why I Drink...Cider w/ Marketer Karen Lewis, at Nitty's Cider
In this episode of This Is Why I Drink... with Ben Rice, I sit down with my good friend and marketer extraordinaire Karen Lewis, an absolute dynamo who immediately seizes the means of production over a pint of Beautiful Blues at Nitty's Cider in Sacramento.WARNING: We are also there on cornhole night, so expect a lot of bang for your buck with this very much free episode.ALSO: There will be many references to the video of this episode, but one of the files got corrupted so...no. But we have a YouTube for this, I swear!Karens are gonna Karen, so Madame Lewis drives hard through conversations about the history of electronics, weird thumbs, pooping so hard you pass out, being raised by lesbians, stealing friends, and all the many, many reasons she drinks...cider and other gluten-free beverages due to Celiac's disease. Somehow, she undersells herself throughout the episode.Be sure to learn more about Karen at her website think4it.com or across social media @think4itNitty's Cider (now with beer!) can be found at nittyscider.com or @nittyscider. This Is Why I Drink... Well at Benny's/Q Street Bar & Grill, with Jesse Jones
Host Ben Rice visits Sacramento dive bar mainstay Benny's AKA Q Street Bar & Grill to chat with STAB! Comedy Theater owner Jesse Jones about why he drinks well. Well, well, well, there are so many reasons and ways to pair well vodka with cranberry juice in a desperate attempt to keep costs low and your joie de vivre high! Some might call it the bottom shelf, some might call it cost-effective drunkenness, and for others like Jesse, it's just because the flavor isn't why we're here. Walk down Jesse's long road of life, taking him from the burgeoning Sacramento sketch and improv scene to the fast-paced, high-flying, Chicago-influenced sketch and improv scene of Los Angeles in the early aughts, and back to Sacramento, where he has spread his wings to develop one of the internet's most inexplicable comedy game show/podcast/writing competitions, the long-running STAB!, which existed before its titular comedy club STAB! Comedy Theater. Bask in Jesse's well-crafted improv character stylings and scene chewing recurring characters and act outs, his self-published book, his glancing mention in the New York Times. Are host Ben Rice and guest Jesse Jones perhaps the same person, splintered at some unknown and unknowable crossroads, forever indebted to lifting those around them no matter the cost? Or are we both just bottom shelf vodka crans, more sugar than juice, more hydrating than intoxicating? So many questions, so many answers, to be found here, on the latest episode of This Is Why I Drink...with Ben Rice. And if your questions remain unanswered, consider joining (from a vast distance) Jesse Jones on his yearly voyage to the desert for Burning Man, in search of those remains.STAB! Comedy Theater can be found physically at 1710 Broadway, Sacramento, CA, on YouTube, Twitch, or elsewhere @stabcomedy or stabcomedytheater.comJesse Jones is...around, and also at those same places, nearly every hour of every day!Thank you again to Benny's/Q Street Bar & Grill for allowing us to record - they can be found at 2013 Q Street in Sacramento or on IG @bennysofficialqstreetYou can find out more about host Ben Rice, Barley & Me, This Is Why I Drink..., and his comedy (shows) @barleyandmepod or at www.barleyandmepod.comIntro Music: "Functional Alcoholism" by Be Brave Bold RobotInterstitial Music: "JamRoc" by BreezLogo by Ben Rice and Jaclyn Weiand

"I Don't Want To See Your Sad Person Memes" - Femme Fest organizer/improvisor Lacey Carroll, over a Saison at Pangaea Bier Cafe
Welcome to the inaugural name pending offshoot of Barley & Me, where I (host Ben Rice) sit down with interesting people over their favorite drinks at their favorite places, whether it be beer, hard alcohol, coffee, or anything else.Today, we're talking to improvisor Lacey Carroll (@lacey.m.carroll) about this weekend's (Friday March 28/Saturday March 29, 2025) Femme Fest at Sacramento Comedy Spot (tickets at www.saccomedyspot.com/femmefest) while seated on the patio at Sacramento's first Belgian beer bar, Pangaea Bier Cafe.Lacey is a big fan of saisons, so we started with Sante Adairius's Jaybird, a foudre-aged saison with mango. We then tried a beer both of us were hesitant on, a hoppy brown from Ghost Town called Rust & Ruin.Aside from Femme Fest, we also discussed Lacey's attempts to get into improv at the age of 12, why she loves a good saison, merch-making, marketing, corporate comedy, and how local news journalists have some of the worst background work instincts on the planet. All this and more on...Bevy of Bevvies? Joining us for the conversation is comedian Jon Lehre, who is also the booker at Santa Rosa's premier comedy club Barrel Proof Lounge. Episode 181: Sacramento Beer Week 2024 (w/ Chris Keeton & David Weiss)
Host Ben Rice travels to Sacramento, CA, to sit down with Sacramento Area Brewers Guild president Chris Keeton (head brewer at Alaro) and vice president David Weiss (brewer at Blue Note) to talk about Sacramento Beer Week 2024 (happening April 26-May 5). We discuss this year's iteration of the Rising Together guild collaboration (among other things). In past years, it's been an IPA using certain ingredients, but this year, in honor of the Sacramento Brewers Showcase happening on Saturday May 4 (at Heart Health Park), they're honoring May the 4th Be With You, by letting breweries choose the Light Side or Dark Side, allowing for a wide range of beer styles and flavors, and reminding consumers of the vast array of beers available in the beer scene and what differentiates each brewery. Plus! Taprooms and bars are back in business at Sac Beer Week 2024! Internal strife has diminished that in recent years, but those are the sins of the father, not the current administration, who is working hard to recapture the spirit of Sac Beer Week. This episode is not only a celebration of what Beer Week and the beer scene once was, but an exploration of where it's going and how it will handle a more educated and less alcohol-friendly next generation of consumers. We also shout out some people who keep the scene alive and show that, even when day-to-day excitement may be down, there's still a strong supportive and passionate base of brewers, marketers, and drinkers. David Weiss damn near gets emotional on the episode and Chris shows why he was put in charge in the first place. Episode 178: New Helvetia Brewing's New Co-Operative Model (w/ current owner Dave Gull)
Host Ben Rice travels to Sacramento, CA, to pay yet another visit to New Helvetia Brewing. This time, he sits down with current owner Dave Gull to discuss New Helvetia's newly-announced move to a public co-operative model and their recent 11th anniversary (and Ben's secret lineup pop-up show at said anniversary party). While we do get into specifics about what the co-op model means for him, the company, its employees, the city of Sacramento, and potential members, first, we take our sweet-ass time getting there by wishing Dave a happy 50th birthday (because he was kind enough to sit down with me on his birthday), discussing a variety of topics, such as reincarnation, Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Ben's past career in music journalism, Sacramento's odd behavior toward the arts and passion projects, Sacramento history lost to time, capitalism's war on positive change, and that old bugaboo Nationalized Healthcare. Plus! Again, so much detail about what this co-operative is, how it will work, what you can expect and how you can plan for the unexpected if you wish to join the membership, its efforts at equity, hyper-focusing on improving Sacramento while getting it drunk at the same time, and its $300 lifetime membership!Find out more about this co-op effort and how to get involved (and answers to questions we maybe didn't answer on the episode) or just to see what they've got on tap and available to devour (I WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR HERE: AFTER THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED, I HAD THE BIRRIA BURGER FROM CHEF NATE SOTO AND IT IS THE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD AND IS IN THE TOP 10 THINGS I HAVE EATEN OF ANY KIND - TRULY, IF YOU SEE THIS ON SPECIAL, ORDER IT. Leonard Malting Reviews! One Pint at a Time (w/ director Aaron Hose, producer Brigitte Hose
Welcome to a brand-new episode of Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting, host Ben Rice's beer-centric movie podcast with co-hosts Paulina Olivares & Corky McDonnell. On this episode, we discuss the new beer documentary One Pint at a Time, with director Aaron Hose and producer Brigitte Hose.Unfortunately, Corky could not attend the recording due to a family event and Ben had to miss the documentary screening for similar reasons, so Paulina handles this one almost entirely on her own. And does an EXCELLENT job.One Pint at a Time is a beer documentary focusing on Black beer history, from the invention of beer, early brewing, up to the modern day, where many still see it as odd if a Black person likes, let alone makes, beer. Through discussions with Black brewers and brewery owners, and trips to breweries throughout the world, regardless of ownership, the Hoses try to provide proof to everyone that if you have a dream or a passion, it is worth pursuing."We" also discuss energy vampires, correcting ignorance, the documentary festival circuit, the founding of the NB2A (National Black Brewers Association), 25+ years of documentary filmmaking, the first-ever Black beer festival FreshFest, and so much more.If you have a beer-centric or heavily-beer-involved movie recommendation, let us know and maybe we’ll do this again! This campaign goes to support local cancer-fighting charity Albie Aware. You can support by grabbing a collaboration pint at Urban Roots on October 7, at Flatland on October 14, at Claimstake on October 21, and/or at Crooked Lane October 28. Episode 168: Saison's Greetings w/ Comedians Stephen Furey, Emma Haney & Becky Lynn
Host Ben Rice invites his favorite comedy friends (and lover oh my) Stephen Furey (@scubastevefurey), Emma Haney (@ehaneycomedy), and Becky Lynn (@ohthatsbecky) into his (their) home for his/their yearly winter recap. This year, we're tackling saisons for our year-end Saison's Greetings episode! We go from THE definitive saison, to clones of that saison, to slight variations to wild experimentations, while recapping our years, bickering like old friends, praising the Sacramento comedy scene as being unlike any other in the world (and why that seemingly self-important stance is provably true), and getting, well, let's face it, progressively drunker, as this episode carries on. All told, we drink, discuss, and review ten, count em, 10, different saisons from around the world (but mostly the California area, with a HEAVY emphasis on Peter Hoey/Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse creations). Barbers! Brussel sprouts! Ballpark Hot Dogs! Ben's Condiment Bindle! Biscuits and Gravy! Bleu Cheese! Ben's Infamous Blackout! Being banned from comedy clubs (and Bars!)!(unrelated to previously-mentioned blackouts) Bullying! Beer! Beer donations! Things that don't start with B! (In case things like ASMR, alarm clock harmonies, apricots, ah crap that's all A's, ok, take 2 - in case things like parking tickets, favorite cereals, secondary fermentations, the fickle fortune of fame, disrespectful comics and booking requests (ah crap, booking starts with B), and global domination tickle your fancy)Look, there's a lot to unpack here and maybe we resolve some stuff and maybe we don't. Do some of us have multiple 3rd favorite saisons? Probably. Do we appreciate the art and science of it all? Mostly. Do we do this for us? No! We do it for you. Ep166: Maira Kimura, Yumi Shimada & Fernanda Ueno of Japas Cervejaria & Pooah Alon of Beerternational
Host Ben Rice travels to Sunnyvale, CA, to sit down with Japanese-Brazilian Japas Cervejaria's co-founders Maira Kimura (brewer), Yumi Shimada (creative director), and Fernanda Ueno (brewer), plus Beerternational co-founder and CEO Pooah Alon, after a day of complete madness as a part of the Japas & Friends Celebration, which celebrated their collaboration with Tetra Hotel in Sunnyvale. We talked about their current attempts to infiltrate the U.S. market with Beerternational's help (10 states and counting), the insanity of their promotional trip to introduce their product, and their focus on blending their Brazilian and Japanese roots when crafting their beers.Plus! Intertwining their past and present to build their future, Brazil's prohibitive craft beer pricing (the answer shouldn't surprise you), an exciting use of cacao, and their very special Maru series of beers, which honor the 110th anniversary of Japanese integration to Brazil (I won't spoil the full story they uncovered)! In this episode of Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting, host Ben Rice and half he crew (Paulina Olivares of Drake's Brewing and president of the Sacramento Pink Boots Society and NOT Corky McDonnell of the Dare Daniel Podcast) discuss and review the new beer documentary, Girl Beer, with surprise guest, directorMarena Domingo. This episode was recorded at Drake's The Barn in Sacramento immediately after a showing of the film and a women in beer roundtable (which was also recorded, with permission, for this episode!)We discuss Paulina's years-long efforts to help Marena make this documentary a reality and get it viewed in Sacramento (even longer than Leonard Malting has been a thing!), what "girl beer" is/isn't, and the differences in treatment of male vs female taproom/brewery staff by customers. Plus! The endless doubt of knowledge, expertise, and experience of female-identifying workers, adorable skunks, and responsible kid ownership. Episode 159: New Year, Old Beer (At Campus Brewing w/ Corky McDonnell & Paulina Olivares)
Host Ben Rice travels to Campus Brewing in West Sacramento to complete his 2021 recap/2022 preview episode with his Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting co-hosts Corky McDonnell (Dare Daniel Podcast) and Paulina Olivares (Pink Boots Society/Drake's). Alas, by the time you hear this, Campus will be no more, as the cards were stacked against it. And that's kinda the vibe here, as we all brought a beer that was at least one year old, starting strong with Corky's pick of Great Divide Barrel Aged Yeti, sliding back to reality with one of COVID's early victims, San Leandro's Cleophus Quealy's barrel aged farmhouse ale Dark Horse, then ruining the reality of love with Paulina's pick, a Pliny the Younger TIPA bottled on 2/14/2020. From the best of bestiality (jokes) to the secret joys of colonoscopies, this episode shines a light on the absurdity that has been our past two years, with a sarcastic and, sadly, dejected eye on 2022. Oh, and we have two secret additional beers you need to tune in to find out about, because we've learned at least one thing from this experience. So sit back, relax, and accept the absolute clusterfuck that is episode 159 of Barley & Me. Host Ben Rice travels (digitally) to Walla Walla, Washington, simply for an excuse to say Walla Walla, Washington over and over again. While there, he also manages to interview Troy Robinson of Quirk Brewing and Phil Neumann of Mainstem Malt about locally-sourced, salmon-safe ingredients in Quirk-y craft beers (and more streamlined ones as well, stream/salmon pun intentional), as well as the challenges of being deemed "organic", and getting local farmers to buy in on craft beer. Plus! Mainstem's fundraising campaign through WeFunder (ends November 18th! Buy in for as little as $100!), malt-chewing ASMR, spineless beers, and Ben's attempt to solve the out-of-state distribution law issues using this one clever trick! Host Ben Rice meets up with podcaster KinkySudz of Sudz Under the Sun and the Black Nerd Friday podcasts (plus two upcoming projects) at Sacramento's Oak Park Brewing to discuss their freshly-brewed limoncello beer collab, which is set to release on August 6.
