Sorry we didn't have a BEHIND THE LENS show for you last week due to unforeseen circumstances, but I'm back this week with a fun interview with a very affable, engaging, funny, and talented director, writer, and actor REED ARNOLD as we talk about his feature directorial debut DO US PART. A fun, fun rom com, filled with a lot of heart, terrific performances, and some great physical comedy, DO US PART is the perfect relaxing summer entertainment. On what should be the happiest day of his life, Ryan's wedding is thrown into chaos when Rose, his best friend from college—and the woman who has secretly loved him for years—arrives uninvited, determined to finally tell him how she feels. As old emotions resurface, Ryan's best man, Mark, finds himself scrambling to keep a web of long-buried secrets from detonating before the couple can say "I do." For generations, historians, researchers, authors, and paranormal enthusiasts have searched for answers surrounding the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists. Science and documents have shown what theoretically happened, but with no definitive explanation ever discovered, the event remains one of the most debated mysteries in American history. It's another entertaining and enlightening episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to co-writer/director ANTHONY FRITH and his documentary MOCKBUSTER. Now, MOCKBUSTER isn't your typical documentary. This is a documentary directed by Anthony Frith concurrently with his directing of an Asylum Studios B-movie classic, THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. I know you know The Asylum, the studio responsible for the SHARKNADO franchise and a few hundred other glorious B-movie genre gems that inevitably revolve around sharks, aliens, dinosaurs, Nazis, Russians, nukes, bad accents, vampires, zombies, and generally a take-off on known blockbusters by altering titles and scripts ever so slightly into what have become known as "Mockbusters." Enter Australian filmmaker ANTHONY FRITH. Anthony has an interesting background but has primarily made a living making corporate video shorts and PSAs like "how to grieve" video manuals, but has long dreamed of directing a feature film. One day, the light bulb went off, and he got the idea to reach out to The Asylum, asking to direct a film. As luck would have it, The Asylum had a movie for him to direct – THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. Terrific! But, Anthony has to adhere to The Asylum model – 6 days to film, there is no script yet, and we want it shot in Australia. Okay! But Anthony took things a step further. He saw comedic potential in documenting the process of making a film for The Asylum and spoke with David Latt, CEO and Head of Production, about his idea to shoot a documentary of the making of THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT while he was shooting THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. Needless to say, Latt loved the idea and said go for it, which meant Anthony would be directing two films simultaneously – a documentary and a narrative, with the documentary capturing the entire Asylum process of B-movie filmmaking. Thus, MOCKBUSTER was born. MOCKBUSTER is a scream! And this conversation with Anthony is almost too much fun as Anthony and I dive into the logistics and challenges of directing two films concurrently. THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT was financed entirely by The Asylum, while it was left to Anthony and his documentary producers to find financing for MOCKBUSTER. And did you know that the Tiki culture, as it's called, started right outside of LA in Venice, California? Directed by JOSH DRAGOTTA who is a veteran editor specializing in commercial production, trailers and documentaries, along with editing on projects tied to La La Land, Bullet Train, Severance, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, CABALI marks his feature directorial debut. Focusing on the evolution of Tiki mug collecting from a niche hobby into a worldwide community rooted in design, craftsmanship, nostalgia, and preservation, the film also follows Doug "Fini" Finical, a longtime Tiki collector whose extensive collection of over 1000 Tiki mugs inspired the creation of Cabali, a modern speakeasy-style Tiki bar in Oro Valley, Arizona. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Another fun week on BEHIND THE LENS! Another terrific film and filmmaker! That's right! This week, it's all about THE GET OUT with director/co-writer DERRICK BORTE. What a fun ride! Wow! I laughed. I was entertained. I love the story. I love the third-act twist. The cast, led by Russell Crowe, is phenomenal. The production values are top-notch. Of course, how could they not be with Brendan Galvin as your DP and Mark Warner as your editor? Directed by Derrick Borte with screenplay by Derrick and Daniel Forte, based on the novel STRIP by Thomas Perry, THE GET OUT stars Russell Crowe, Luke Evans, Teresa Palmer, with the scene-stealing duo of Nina Dobrev and Aaron Paul. A fun premise, nightclub owner Manco (Russell Crowe) is on the verge of leaving his dangerous past behind for retirement with his girlfriend Sunny (Teresa Palmer). When masked gunmen Carrie and Jeff (Nina Dobrev, Aaron Paul) rob him and he finds himself squeezed by ruthless cartels, a mysterious newcomer, Joe Carver, (Luke Evans) arrives with an interest in buying Manco's business – money laundering and all. With danger closing in from all sides, Manco must navigate a deadly web of deception, power, and survival – where escape may no longer be an option. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's another week of BEHIND THE LENS shining a spotlight on DANCES WITH FILMS and a couple of the wonderful films and filmmakers in this year's festival, namely HEKLA and w/d MICHAEL GLOVER SMITH and THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGG and w/d DOUGLAS BREMNER. First up – MICHAEL GLOVER SMITH and HEKLA! HEKLA is a comedy/drama about the emotional cost of pursuing a creative life. Set over one hectic day in Chicago, it explores how ambition, identity, and vulnerability collide when you're chasing something as personal – and uncertain – as an acting career. Hekla Gudmunsdottir (Elizabeth Stam), a determined actress, races through auditions, breakups, and self-doubt, risking her heart and career to claim her voice and step fully into the artist and woman she's meant to be: Hekla goes on four auditions, gets new headshots, and plays Lady Macbeth in a dive bar, all while attempting to keep intrusive thoughts of a recently ended relationship at bay. Beneath the humor and dramatic momentum lies a story about the importance of showing up for yourself, even when the world isn't clapping for you yet. Shifting gears, and I do mean shifting, we move into a medical legal tale told from a very unique perspective – that of the medical expert. THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGG is inspired by a true story involving writer/director DOUG BREMNER. In addition to being a filmmaker, Doug is also a professor of psychiatry and a medical researcher. He did brain imaging research on the effects of an acne medication, isotretinoin (Accutane), on the brain, and as a result became an expert witness in multi-district litigation related to depression and suicide in teenagers who had taken the drug. Last week was all about Tribeca Film Festival on BEHIND THE LENS and some wonderful animated short films that had their premieres there. This week it's all about Dances With Films, which starts this week on June 18 and runs through June 28 at the TCL Chinese Theatre complex in Hollywood. And there are some great films for you to look forward to seeing, starting with the opening night film – the world premiere of YALE from director JAY SILVERMAN. I love this film! YALE is based on a true story about screenwriter Van Billet’s maternal grandfather. When he first learned about his family lore as a young teen, he couldn't believe it was true and knew he had to write about it. And not just any animation, but world premiere animation shorts – DEAR UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS and ROAR, both animated gems led by filmmakers with a Pixar pedigree – animation editor SARAH AFFLECK and writer/director JESSE WEGLEIN, respectively. First up, we're gonna roar with writer/director/editor/dp/and songwriter JESSE WEGLEIN and his beautiful short ROAR! ROAR follows a neurodivergent young girl with selective mutism who, after being uprooted from Tokyo to San Francisco, must navigate a chaotic new culture and an isolating silence by transforming her internal K-Pop soundtrack into a vibrant visual language to find her place—and her new roar. Then, more animation goodness for you from animation editor SARAH AFFLECK and DEAR UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS. DEAR UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS is the fantastical and all-too-relatable story of one woman's epic battle against her noisy neighbors for a good night's sleep. Welcome back to a new week and a new month of BEHIND THE LENS! I've got a terrific show for you today, thanks to actor and producer KATIE CASSIDY and director JON KEEYES talking all things SPEED DEMON! And what a film it is! A runaway train. A demon named Asmodeus. A nun called upon to perform an exorcism. On paper, it sounds like the kind of high-concept supernatural action-horror mash-up that could easily veer into camp. Instead, director Jon Keeyes and star/producer Katie Cassidy deliver something far more compelling. Beneath the demonic possession, biblical imagery, and escalating terror lies a deeply human story about grief, addiction, faith, and self-discovery. And at the center of the story is Sister Lu. The official synopsis of SPEED DEMON is: When Father Novak and Sister Lu board a train from Montreal to New York City, they aren't prepared for the danger and evil that would pursue them. This week on BEHIND THE LENS, we turn our attention to the Miami art world and first-time feature director JING AI NG with her film FORGE. I thoroughly enjoyed this film from a story perspective and from a directorial and production perspective. As I've been seeing in quite a few films of late from first-time feature directors, once again, production values are high, but story and character are at the center of it all. On seeing FORGE, I would never believe that this was Jing's first feature directorial effort. And she is the screenwriter, as well! FORGE is written and directed by JING AI NG and stars Kelly Marie Tran, Andie Ju, Brandon Soo Hoo, and Edmund Donovan, among others. Some fabulous artisans showcasing their talents on FORGE, including cinematographer Leo Purman, editor Briana Chmielewski, production designer Arielle Ness-Cohn, and composers Marco Carrion & Ian Chang. What a terrific show I've got for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to introduce you to a wonderful British filmmaker, writer/director JOHN MICHAEL KENNEDY, who makes his narrative feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller, AN ENEMY WITHIN. Not only is this John's narrative feature directorial debut, but as I found out, this interview that you are about to hear was his very first interview, something I found surprising given the excellence of his short films. So this is a real treat for all of you – and for me. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep decide to solve the crime themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn't as simple as it appears in books. The other film you must see, also based on a novel, is REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES on Netflix, starring Sally Field as an older widow named Tova, whose life is changed by a friendship with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, and Cameron, a new-in-town employee looking for his father, played by Lewis Pullman. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

I'm very excited about this week's BEHIND THE LENS because I get to talk about RENNY HARLIN and his new film DEEP WATER! After 33 years of chatting with Renny and talking about his films, he truly is not only one of my favorite filmmakers, but one of my favorite people. His intelligence, his skill, his dedication to the craft of moviemaking and storytelling, his directorial vision, and his kindness. I adore him. Chatting with Renny is always a joy, and no matter how long we talk, it's never long enough. And that's what happened last week when we sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss DEEP WATER. Renny wanted an hour. Publicists said no and offered 4 minutes. I begged and got 15 minutes. BUT, undeterred, when the formal interview (which ran 20 minutes) ended, Renny and I spent another 30 minutes together on our own, talking about the film, filmmaking, and other things. For those who aren't familiar with the film as yet, DEEP WATER is the story of an airline flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai that goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they're not alone, and they must survive the shark-infested waters. Simple right? Not the way Renny Harlin tells it. This week on BEHIND THE LENS it's all about "To See or Not To See", and after hearing today's exclusive interviews with BEN WHEATLEY discussing NORMAL and ANEIL KARIA talking all things HAMLET, I think you'll agree that the answer will easily be – Must See. Both of these films are fresh and fantastic, from story to performances to production values. First up today is director ANEIL KARIA talking about HAMLET starring Riz Ahmed. It takes guts to handle Shakespeare and adapt and reimagine, but director Aneil Karia did an amazing job with HAMLET. One of the most interesting aspects of the film comes courtesy of Michael Lesslie's screenplay. Michael did a wonderful job adapting "Macbeth" for director Justin Kurzel, and once again delivers a Shakespearean adaptation that is relatable and attainable for today's audience with HAMLET. Switching gears and genres, we head to the small town of NORMAL with director BEN WHEATLEY. I love Ben Wheatley's work, be it High Rise, Free Fire, Rebecca, Meg 2, or now, NORMAL. Ben can tackle any genre and always delivers first-rate films with high production values, excellent performances, and, in many cases, go-for-broke action and intensity. I have to put NORMAL in the latter category. Directed by Ben Wheatley and written by the brilliant Derek Kolstad, and starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL is the latest collaboration from this powerhouse team. Described as a kinetic neo-Western action film with Odenkirk as an unassuming substitute sheriff with a troubled past who, after moving to a quaint Midwestern town, responds to a bank robbery and unknowingly uncovers something far more explosive. NORMAL is weird, wacky, and wonderful, brimming with originality, spurting blood, fantastic action, great deadpan humor, and first-rate performances. It is an absolute blast. OUR HERO BALTHAZAR marks Oscar's feature directorial debut, but it is certainly not his first time in the cinematic rodeo given his prior directing experience with some episodics and shorts, but also serving as a producer on films like UNCUT GEMS and FRANCES HA, as well as working his way through the various components of filmmaking, including sound recording, editing, production design, and more, giving him a nice grounding for a feature directorial experience. OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR is a brilliant directorial calling card for Oscar. Co-written by Oscar with Ricky Camilleri, OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR stars Jaeden Martell and Asa Butterworth, along with Chris Bauer, Jennifer Ehle, Pippa Knowles, Avan Jogia, and more. In this exclusive conversation, Paul dives deep into the making of his horror-comedy SCARED TO DEATH, a self-described "love letter to horror movies" that blends satire, absurdity, and genuine genre reverence. This week, we're taking a look at WORLDBREAKER, an apocalyptic, action-oriented, sci-fi, creature feature with a dad and daughter dynamic that is told from the perspective of a young teenage girl, directed by BRAD ANDERSON. Described as a pulse-pounding sci-fi action thriller about survival, sacrifice, and a young woman's fight to step out of the shadows and into the war she was born to face, we encounter this apocalyptic world at a time of war following "The Stitch", a rift in the earth that released the Breakers, monsters that infect and twist their victims. There are also the Hybrids, the term for infected humans when attacked and injured by the Breakers. Men succumbed first to the Breakers, leaving women to lead the fight. Willa's mother is one of the war's fiercest warriors. Her father, a battle-scarred veteran not yet infected by the monsters, hides with Willa on a remote island, training her to survive. This is a fun week for me on BEHIND THE LENS, given the two films that we're talking about and the two filmmakers I'm speaking with. It's a great way to kick off my 44th year as a film critic (although I was published with reviews going back 5 years before that)! Today you'll hear from one of my all-time favorite directors, RENNY HARLIN, as we talk about THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 3, which now completes his trilogy of the rebooted classic. And, then a new fave writer/director BRYAN FULLER, who makes his feature directorial debut with the sumptuous and fun visual feast, DUST BUNNY. First up – RENNY HARLIN and THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 3. The Strangers began back in 2008 thanks to w/d Bryan Bertino, who treated us to the tale of James Hoyt and Kristen McKay, who visit an isolated vacation home to enjoy some time together. Hopeful bliss turned into terror, making their stay a bloody nightmare. In 2018, director Johannes Roberts, with a script by Bryan Bertino and Ben Ketai, rebooted the franchise with The Strangers: Prey at Night, starring Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, and Christina Hendricks. It was always Johannes's intent to do a sequel, but that didn't pan out. But then in 2024, RENNY HARLIN stepped into the franchise with what has become a three-chapter series with all three films shot at the same time over 53 days of principal photography, with a cast led by Madelaine Petsch. Now, we have the final piece of the puzzle with THE STRANGERS CHAPTER 3. Maya is again the last woman standing. She survived what she thought was the worst of the worst, but now she must move on. But how to do that, when she must face the masked killers one last time in a brutal, full-circle reckoning of survival and revenge. This final chapter is very internalized, very observational as Maya tries to absorb what all has happened while trying to understand the psyche of these masked psychopaths. Where lighting and lensing were the key tools in the cinematic toolbox for Chapter 2, sound becomes all-important with CHAPTER 3. And that's what Renny and I focus on in this exclusive interview. Switching gears into a film that I absolutely love is my conversation with writer/director BRYAN FULLER, talking DUST BUNNY. This is a cacophony of creativity and truly a sumptuous visual feast! How the work of production designer Jeremy Reed was ignored by the Academy members in Oscar nominations is beyond me. His work, in concert with that of costume designers Olivier Beriot and Catherine LaTerrier, and cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, is vibrant, alive, and magical. STOP TIME tells the intertwined stories of Peter de Vries, a photographer, and Adrianna Maier, a theatrical lighting designer. Both are carrying heavy burdens of sadness: burdens that mutual friends of theirs believe each could lighten for the other. Over the course of 24 hours in New York City, their lives circle, until they meet at the opening of Peter's gallery show, which leads them both down an unexpected path. With no water, no exit, and the city oblivious to their cries for help, the heat and hunger push them to the brink, both physically and mentally. As desperation sets in, a bond forms between them, blurring the lines between fear, trust, and something deeper. But as their bodies weaken and the ledge starts looking like the only escape, they must decide: wait for a rescue…or take fate into their own hands. He's got one last job to do, and that is to take out his rival Charles Mangold. Unfortunately, Hayden gets double-crossed by his boss, who has hits out on Mangold AND Hayden. Now marked for death, Hayden unexpectedly finds himself partnering with Mangold to outrun his boss and the third hitman in the mix. I'm excited for this week's BEHIND THE LENS, thanks to a director whom I adore and have been chatting with for multiple decades, RENNY HARLIN, who goes in-depth with me for THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2, and writer/director MATTHEW BISSONNETTE, who brings us a film I immediately connected with, DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN starring Gabriel Byrne. First up, Johnny Danks and SHAKEY GROUNDS. What began as a short film about coffee and a coffee shop, after 15 years, morphed into the feature film we have today, SHAKEY GROUNDS, which is not about coffee, but a film that features grunge music and captures Seattle's 1990s vibe. SHAKEY GROUNDS is the story of a troubled musician and his band as they navigate personal demons and a shot at redemption with a disgraced record executive. After multiple obstacles, they rise together, finding purpose in their music and each other. Switching gears, we move into the world of boxing with BANG BANG, an exquisite character study courtesy of director and editor VINCENT GRASHAW. I love this film and every element of the storytelling. In BANG BANG, retired boxer Bernard "Bang Bang" Rozyski finds a renewed sense of purpose when he reconnects with his estranged grandson and begins training him in the very sport that destroyed his life. As the bond between them grows, questions arise about Bang Bang's true motivations – including from an old flame who witnessed his explosive rise in the 1980s and his bitter rivalry with her cousin, now a formidable political figure and Detroit mayoral candidate, Darnell Washington. Written and directed by Miki Magasiva and starring Anapela Polataivao, Antonia Robinson, Zac O'Meagher, Beulah Koale, Dalip Sondhi, Nicole Whippy, and Jamie Irvine, among others, TINA is an inspiring drama, a light-hearted rhythmic tear-jerker, and the story of Samoan teacher Mareta Percival. Struggling after the death of her daughter in the Christchurch earthquakes, Mareta reluctantly takes on the role of substitute teacher at an elite, wealthy private school and is surprised to find children crying out for guidance, inspiration, and love. Using the symphony of her culture to empower her students, she forms a choir, bringing them together while unexpectedly rediscovering her passion for being a teacher and mother. Then, we shift some gears with director CHAD HARTIGAN's THE THREESOME. Directed by Chad and written by Ethan Ogilby, THE THREESOME stars, as our threesome, a flawlessly funny and heartfelt Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Ruby Cruz, with some wonderful supporting performances by Jaboukie Yang-White and Josh Segarra, among others. As you can imagine, an impulsive night leads to a wild threesome between Olivia (Zoey Deutch), Connor (Jonah Hauer-King), and Jenny (Ruby Cruz), leaving both women facing unexpected consequences, thrusting all three into the raw and beautifully messy chaos of adulthood. And we've got a brief recap and some congratulations for this weekend's Creative Arts Emmy Award winners, including Supervising Stunt Coordinator Jon Koyama and this stunt team for The Boys who got two pieces of hardware, the amazing soundies at Formosa Group who picked up Emmys for their work on multiple shows (Yay, George Haddad!), and the team at Jeopardy! (including my friend, writer John Duarte), as well as other winners like Barack Obama, who nabbed his third Emmy for Outstanding Narration of the documentary Our Oceans, while Julie Andrews picked up gold for her work as Best Character Voiceover on Bridgerton. A fun show this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to take a look at two new films that just opened in theatres on Friday and speak with three filmmakers whom I've spoken with in the past, all of whose work I admire, respect, and in the case of one director, can't get enough of. I'm talking about the wonderful filmmaking team of MICHAEL ANGELO COVINO and KYLE MARVIN and their hilarious new non-rom com rom com, SPLITSVILLE, along with one of my fave filmmakers and the man who I believe helped put Taylor Sheridan on the map as a writer with the fabulous "Hell or High Water", director DAVID MACKENZIE and his new thriller RELAY. So let's kick things off with the comedy stylings of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin and SPLITSVILLE. It's a story of two couples. Ashley and Carey. And Julie and Paul. All best friends. And all with personalities as different as night and day. But while Ashley and Carey are on a road trip, driving down a multi-lane highway, out of the blue and left field Ashley asks Carey for a divorce. Let the hilarity and hijinks begin! Good-natured and kind of wimpy, Carey runs to besties Julie and Paul for support and a place to crash while he figures out what to do. It's then that he finds out their secret to their happy marriage. It's an open marriage. Shocked and curious, things take a left turn with Carey crossing the line, resulting in chaotic madness and mayhem for all concerned. So now, let's switch gears and ratchet up the thrills and tension with RELAY and director DAVID MACKENZIE. I have been champing at the bit, sitting on this interview with David since early June, as the publicity team asked me to hold it until the film's release. Now the release has arrived, and I can share this interview with all of you. RELAY is a tense, New York thriller which has a timelessness to it while echoing the great paranoid thrillers of the 70s. In RELAY, Riz Ahmed plays Ash, a world-class quot;fixerquot; who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client named Sarah (Lily James) needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. RELAY is like a puzzle, with each production element integrating or interlocking with another. It's always fascinating to get inside David's mind and understand his vision, and what a vision this is with RELAY. We're going a bit dark this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to writer/director JEREMY RUDD and his directorial feature debut with DIE'CED: RELOADED, and the fabulous veteran director CHUCK RUSSELL and his latest dive back into the darkness with WITCHBOARD. Let's kick things off with JEREMY RUDD and his feature debut, DIE'CED: RELOADED, which follows the story of Benny, an infamous serial killer who escapes a high-security asylum on Halloween night, turning 1980s/90s Seattle into a blood-soaked nightmare. Reborn behind a twisted scarecrow mask, he leaves a trail of carnage across the suburbs, as whispers of his gruesome past resurface, fueling panic in a city soaked in neon and fear. But Benny isn't just killing for pleasure – he's hunting someone. A young woman unknowingly tied to the darkest chapter of his madness becomes his fixation, and the closer he gets, the bloodier it gets.
