Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  Well, we have another legend on this episode.  Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys.  Duane has been a friend to Harold and Russ for decades.  Let's have a seat with him and listen to his remarkable journey to the Oaks and hear about his incredible life and career.  Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Duane Allen..BIO:A native of Taylortown, Texas, Duane (“Ace”) Allen had formal training in both operatic and quartet singing before becoming a member of the Oaks in 1966. He is a member of the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame and has written a book on the history of Gospel music. He also holds an honorary doctorate from a Christian college.Duane graduated from Paris Junior College, and then Texas A&M University at Commerce, Texas. He received a B.S. in Music from Texas A&M, studying with Metropolitan Opera stars Richard Webb and William Abbott. For his classical music degree, Duane concentrated on voice, piano, and composition. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from both Paris Junior College and Texas A&M in 2017. He and his wife Norah Lee underwrite a scholarship fund for Texas A&M University Department of Music students.During the time he studied at Paris Junior College, two operettas were written based on Duane’s life—one entitled “College Go Round” and the other entitled “Let’s See Paree (Paris).” He received a music scholarship to Texas A&M, and, while he was a student there, he starred in a lead role of “Annie Get Your Gun.” He also sang in an elite chorale group, which toured through the United States, as well as internationally.In 2014, Duane received a special honor from his hometown community of Cunningham, Texas. On April 15, Lamar County officials dedicated the Duane Allen Memorial Bridge on the newly designated Duane Allen Road. The bridge crosses the Big Sandy Creek just a few hundred yards from where Duane was born and raised on the Allen family farm. While in Lamar County for the event, Duane and Norah Lee presented a check to the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial in Paris, Texas. Proceeds were used to support the memorial and to honor family members who had served in the military.On August 9, 2014, Duane was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony that included fellow members of The Oak Ridge Boys, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban as honorary inductees. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!   What a special episode this is.  Our guest today is a friend to Harold, Russ, and Wade and a friend to all who have had the good fortune to know him.  We welcome our dear friend, Rex Benson.   Rex is an American songwriter and music publisher whose career spans more than five decades in the music business.Bio:Beginning his songwriting career in the early 1970s, Rex went on to have songs recorded by an impressive list of artists, including Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks, Tammy Wynette, Don Williams, Joe Diffie, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mel Tillis, Bobby Vinton, Linda Ronstadt and Brad Paisley.His songwriting credits include “Unto You This Night,” recorded by Garth Brooks; “Glass Houses,” recorded by Tammy Wynette with Joe Diffie; “Healing Hands,” recorded by Don Williams; and “What That Means,” recorded by Kenny Rogers with Brad Paisley.Rex also co-wrote “Bed of Roses” with Steve Gillette. The song was recorded by several artists, including Kenny Rogers with Linda Davis, Chesapeake with Linda Ronstadt, Bobby Vinton and Mel Tillis. Tillis’ 1984 recording provides a special connection to Behind the Shedd — it was produced by legendary record producer Harold Shedd.Beyond writing songs, Rex built a successful career in music publishing through the Rex Benson Music Group. One of his greatest publishing successes came with “Buy Me a Rose.” Rex signed and helped place the song with Kenny Rogers, whose recording became a Number One country hit in 2000. We are back Behind the Shedd!  In episode 31, Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with a true renaissance man and a dear friend to our team, Tommy Jackson.  Tommy is a mentor, a leader, a life coach, a motivational speaker, a football coach, a money manager, an author, a music guy, a song man, and just a great human being.  Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tommy Jackson.Bio:Tommy’s journey is one of overcoming the odds to achieve tremendous success. At a young age, he realized that taking ownership of his circumstances could be achieved through self discovery and education. While juggling two jobs to help his single mother pay the power bill, Tommy earned an academic scholarship to Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). There, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Finance and a minor in Psychology.Years later, Tommy returned to AUM to experience a full-circle moment. In 2017, he was named Business Alumni of the Year, and the following year, he was honored as one of AUM’s Top 50 Most Influential Alumni.These accolades were the result of a career in wealth management spanning decades. Recognized as a top financial advisor, Tommy consistently ranked among the Top 1,000 Financial Advisors in the U.S. by Barron’s and Forbes. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In episode 30, Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with one of the greats, Lee Roy Parnell.  Leroy is not only a great songwriter, great guitarist, great performer, and great artist, but just a great guy to hang out with.   What a treat this was, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Lee Roy Parnell:Bio:Regarded as one of the world's preeminent slide guitar virtuosos, Lee Roy Parnell has become synonymous with the instrument and the music that has shaped his life from his youngest years.Born in Abilene, Texas to Roy and Anna Belle Parnell in the winter of 1956, Parnell was raised with an uncompromising work ethic, a healthy respect for tradition, and an unquenchable love of music. Nurtured by everything from the Grand Ol' Opry, to Cotton-country Blues, Hardshell Gospel and the inescapable sound of Bob Wills and Roadhouse Boogie that permeated the North Central Texas plains, that love grew into a passion before Parnell reached his early teens."It sounds a little like a press-release," he said recently, "but the truth is I was raised in a house filled with music. It was as much a part of the soundtrack of youth as my mother's voice and my Daddy's lessons. It was sustenance to me...like water. And it was my way out of Texas. This marked a turning point in his career, as he was soon to leave an indelible imprint on the country music scene.  In Nashville, Gibson held a publishing contract with a company owned by The Oak Ridge Boys. His songwriting prowess quickly caught the attention of prominent artists and led to collaborations that produced many chart-topping country hits.From 1990 to 1994, Gibson showcased his musical versatility as the frontman of the Gibson/Miller Band. Not only did he captivate audiences with his soulful voice, but he also penned many of the band's hits, including "High Rollin'", "Texas Tattoo", "Red, White, and Blue Collar", and "Stone Cold Country". He received the ACM award for ‘Best New Group’ in 1993. He’s also won six BMI awards, two NSAI awards, and was nominated for a Grammy. But for him, this is just the beginning.Gibson's portfolio of written songs is nothing short of impressive. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In episode 26 Harold, Brian, and Wade sit down with the iconic Nashville songwriter and producer, Bobby Braddock!  Some of Bobby's hits include: He Stopped Loving Her Today, Old Flames Have New Names, I Wanna Talk About Me, People Are Crazy, Texas Tornado, Time Marches On, I Don't Remember Loving You, Golden Ring, D-I-V-O-R-C-E,  and many others.  Bio:After arriving in Nashville, Braddock joined Marty Robbins' band as a pianist in February 1965. In January of the next year, a song he wrote for Robbins, "While You're Dancing", became Braddock's first record to appear on the charts. He then signed his first of five recording contracts with major record labels and a publishing contract with Tree Publishing Company, now Sony BMG. Braddock quickly established himself as a bankable songwriter, penning songs in the 1970s for such artists as the Statler Brothers, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Nancy Sinatra, Johnny Duncan, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Tommy Overstreet.Braddock continued his successful songwriting career well into the 21st century, writing songs recorded by artists including Lacy J. Dalton, T.G. Sheppard, John Anderson, Mark Chesnutt, and Tracy Lawrence. Braddock sometimes co-wrote songs with Curly Putman or Sonny Throckmorton, fellow members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.As a producer, Braddock's greatest success thus far is the discovery of country singer Blake Shelton, securing a recording deal in 2001. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In episode 25 Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with legendary Nashville super agent, Tony Conway.Bio:Tony opened his first talent agency in Lexington, KY. In 1975, he moved to Nashville, TN, and soon met renowned talent agent, Buddy Lee. Lee quickly took notice of the energetic and driven young Conway and asked him to come to work for him. That was the beginning of a long, mentoring friendship and career for Conway at Buddy Lee Attractions, Inc.In 1987, Conway was named President of Buddy Lee Attractions, and he eventually became CEO and co-owner of the company in 1998. During his tenure at BLA, Conway represented some of music’s most beloved and legendary artists, including Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, The Highwaymen (Willie, Johnny, Kris, and Waylon), Bill Monroe, The Dixie Chicks, Roy Orbison, George Strait, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Ronnie Milsap and Emmylou Harris. Tony has helped guide the successful careers of some of Country Music’s biggest stars, such as Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Tracy Lawrence, Jason Aldean, Lorrie Morgan, Sawyer Brown, Miranda Lambert, Jamey Johnson, Ricky Van Shelton, and John Michael Montgomery among others. Some major successful tours booked by Conway include The Highwaymen Featuring Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings; Neil Young & Crazy Horse; Garth Brooks’ World Tour; and The Dixie Chicks World Tour.Tony Conway is also widely recognized as a leader in the production area of live entertainment. The coordinator of the very first FarmAid show, held in 1985, Conway has worked closely with many of those shows since. He was Executive Producer for the annual CMA Music Festival (formerly Fan Fair) for eleven years and has also served as the Executive Producer of the annual Verizon Wireless BamaJam Music & Arts Festival in Enterprise, AL and the new ShowMe Music & Arts Festival in Springfield, MO.The recipient of numerous industry awards, Conway has been honored with the following: two-time CMA-SRO Agent of the Year, Performance Magazine Agent of the Year, four-time Nominee for Pollstar/Third Coast Agent of the Year, and the Hubert Long Lifetime Achievement Award from the NATD. He also received the IEBA Talent Agent of the Year award, and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. Tony was a recipient of the CMA President’s Award for leading the redesign and transformation of Fan Fair to the CMA Music Festival.In 2010, Tony took his 35 years of experience and industry contacts and struck out on his own, forming Conway Entertainment Group/Ontourage Management. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In episode 23 Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with a engineer, writer, executive and Nashville icon, Doug Johnson.   Biography: Doug Johnson is a Georgia born American record producer and songwriter. He began in the 1970s working as an engineer and mixer for the Lowery Group. His first production credit was for The Burch Sisters, an act that signed with Mercury Nashville in 1988. A year later, Johnson helped Doug Stone secure a contract with Epic Records. While at Epic, Johnson became the vice president of A&R, helping the label to sign Patty Loveless while producing for Ty Herndon, John Michael Montgomery, and others. Johnson also assembled the members of the Gibson/Miller Band, which recorded two albums for Epic. He was promoted to senior vice president of the label in 1994, then moved to Giant Records in 1997, becoming president of that label. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In episode 20 Harold, Russ, and Wade hang out with legendary guitarist, Joh Willis.   John is best known for his work as a session musician, producer, and songwriter.Biography:John Willis was raised in St. Martinville, Louisiana. At age 15, he learned to play banjo and then guitar. At age 22, Willis moved to Los Angeles, where he studied guitar at the Guitar Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, Willis moved to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where he began playing guitar in sessions for Shenandoah, Brian McKnight, The Impressions, and others.  Upon the suggestion of David Briggs, Willis moved to Nashville. Since then, Willis has played on many hit records for Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Willie Nelson, and many others.Willis’ songs have been featured on television networks and video games. He also produces custom albums, songwriter demos, jingles, and voiceovers in his studio, Mount Willis Productions.  In 2002, Willis won the Guitarist of The Year award from the Academy of Country Music. Boyd.  This trio of friends have seen all sides of the music business in Nashville.  Sit back and relax and enjoy today's stories.  This is Behind the Shedd.More about today's guests:Mark  McGuinn was signed to VFR Records in 2001, a newly formed independent record label, which released his first album, Mark McGuinn, in May that year.  Initially, the label had planned to release "That's a Plan" as the album's first single. After a disc jockey at KPLX in Dallas, Texas, began playing "Mrs. Steven Rudy", another track from the album, other nearby stations soon followed suit. Due to the reaction the song was receiving in this market, the label released it as McGuinn's first single, with "That's a Plan" on the B-side.Upon the release of "Mrs. Steven Rudy", McGuinn was considered a "dark horse" on the country music scene, due in part to his jazz background and beatnik image, which were considered outside the norms of country radio.  Mrs. Steven Rudy" was a top ten hit on the Billboard country music charts, and the highest-selling single on the country singles sales charts for five consecutive weeks.  His album entered the Top Country Albums chart at number 18, setting a new record for the highest entry on that chart for the first release from an independent label.Bobby E. Boyd (aka 'Bandera Bob') is a Grammy Award Winning Songwriter with his most recent hit "Bless The Broken Road" (co-written with Marcus Hummon and Jeff Hanna) recorded by 'Rascal Flatts' . The song was No.1 for 6 weeks in 2005 and won a Grammy for Country Song of The Year in Feb. 2006 . It was also the most played song of the year , NSAI Song of the Year and has been awarded a Million-Air Certification by BMI (the 3rd for Boyd) . The Album - 'Feels Like Today' , driven by "Broken Road" , "Fast Cars & Freedom" and "Sarabeth (Skin)" , was the top selling Country Album of 2005 . Boyd's other hits include the No.1 song "In Pictures" by the group 'Alabama' (co-written with Joe Doyle) and the Top 10 song "Working Man's Phd." by 'Aaron Tippin' (co-written with Tippin and Philip Douglas) . These songs are also Million-Air Award Winners from BMI . Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In Episode 15, Harold, Russ, and Wade get in the huddle with Coach Barry Switzer.  Coach Switzer is a  former college and professional football coach. He served for 16 years as head football coach at the University of Oklahoma and four years as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He won three national championships at Oklahoma, and led the Cowboys to win Super Bowl XXX against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dean is a singer, song writer, guitar and fiddle player, recent steel guitar player, but best known for his role in The Newbeats.  The Newbeats were a 1960s American pop vocal trio, led by Larry Henley with Dean and his brother, Mark Mathis. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd!  In Episode 13 Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with legendary music producer and real cowboy, Eddie Kilroy.  Harold and Eddie met in engineering school in Texas in 1959!!   A lifelong friendship was born.   Here's a little about Eddie  - After moving to Nashville, Kilroy gained a position as a producer at Mercury Records. Kilroy's first studio record, produced in 1968, proved to be a hit for Jerry Lee Lewis — and made Kilroy the "one man responsible" for changing the fortunes of Jerry Lee Lewis' flagging career. Kilroy was a producer at Westpark Records in the early 1970s, and became president of Playboy Records when he founded the label for Hugh Hefner, for whom he signed Mickey Gilley. He recorded "Roomful of Roses" in 1974 with Mickey Gilley, and the album became a number one country western hit – Gilley went on to create six number one albums with Playboy. From there Kilroy moved to become the co-president of the MCA Nashville Records office. This week on Episode 9 - Mr. David Ferguson, or Fergie, the legendary sound engineer and producer who started with Cowboy, Jack Clement, and worked with Johnny Cash, Johnny Paycheck, John Prine, U2, Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers.  Fergie has it done it all in Nashville so this week he sits down with Russ Zavitson and his ol' breakfast buddy, Harold Shedd.  Sit back relax and enjoy this trip Behind the Shedd.About Fergie:Fergie's career began in 1980 when "Cowboy" Jack Clement hired him as a runner at Clement's Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa, in Nashville, Tennessee, where Ferguson worked as an engineer after a couple of years. Also managed creative for theme park rides, cartoons, TV series, 40 movies, and the occasional ice show. In addition to Disney creative, set up foreign sub-pub deals, business affairs, HR, operations, licensing, biz dev and copyright IP digitization. Co-ran Leiber and Stoller Music for two years, did deals with Buick for "Stand By Me" and got the ball rolling for a little Broadway show called "Smokey Joe's Cafe".
