Deuteronomy in Context/Overview:The Israelites are about to enter the promised land. Deuteronomy is written in the form of a treaty or covenant, but ultimately no-one can live up to this on their own.In Moses first address, we learn of God’s care for the people and know that as we trust God we too can look to him for help, care and protection.

Today's episode is a discussion leading into the seven-week series where we will cover key points of the book, which will give an overview of Deuteronomy.Later in the year we will return to look at the book in more detail, focussing on some of the laws and their application to us today.

Building on the RockThe sermon ends as it began, being a follower of Jesus means living wholeheartedly for Jesus, where every area of our life is His. We perhaps prefer a softer option with choices about what we devote to Jesus and how we express our devotion. But those who build their lives on the rock are those whose trust is only and always in Jesus. The only other option has all the stability and surety of soft sand.Matthew 7 v 24 -29Tim Ellis

Practice makes PerfectFrom this point on Jesus teaching is concerned with practice. We will read the words “bear” “do” “perform” “put into practice”. The choice in each case is stark only ever two options to follow Jesus on the narrow road or the crowd that walks the broad road. There is no opportunity to compromise.Matthew 7 v 13 – 23

Other PeopleIt would be nice if everyone was like me, we might think, but of course never say out loud. Our attitude can make us too quick to judge others, without thinking about our own faults. Do Not be AnxiousEasier said than done we might say, life today is complicated, fast moving and full of stress. The advertising industry feeds our minds with ideals that define life today. Jesus by contrast singles out the basics of life as examples and tells us that our priority is to seek first above all else the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.Matthew 6 v 25 – 34David Campbell

Where is my heart?It has been said that we would only really know how much we love Jesus if all we had in life was Jesus.
