How to Overcome Insecurity and Stop Letting Fear Run Your Life with Jaemin Frazer

In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Günsberg sits down with life coach and author Jaemin Frazer for a thought-provoking conversation about insecurity, self-worth, identity and the stories we tell ourselves that shape our lives. They explore Jaemin's remarkable journey from church pastor to sought-after coach, including how questioning long-held beliefs transformed the way he understands purpose, responsibility and personal freedom, and ultimately deconstructed everything he knew about his faith. Jaemin discusses why he believes that insecurity isn't simply a lack of confidence, but the fear that our deepest doubts about ourselves might actually be true. Together, they unpack where those beliefs come from, why so many of us unknowingly sabotage our own happiness, and what it really takes to create lasting personal change. Osher and Jaemin also discuss the hidden "secondary gains" that keep us stuck, why agency is one of the most powerful tools we have, how our childhood experiences shape adult behaviour, and what parents can do to help their children build genuine confidence. Whether you're navigating self-doubt, feeling trapped by old patterns, or simply curious about challenging preconceived notions about yourself or your life, this episode offers practical insights that challenge conventional thinking and encourage a deeper understanding of yourself. Stop Avoiding Your Feelings: The Science of Emotional Agility with Susan David

In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, I'm revisiting a powerful conversation I had with world-renowned psychologist and author Dr Susan David about the science of emotions, resilience, and creating meaningful change. Susan shares the ideas behind her groundbreaking work on emotional agility - the ability to accept difficult emotions, understand what they’re telling us, and respond in ways that align with our values. We explore why fighting uncomfortable feelings often makes them stronger, how simply naming our emotions can change the way we experience them, and why discomfort is an essential part of living a meaningful life. She also offers practical tools for managing stress, anxiety, comparison, and self-doubt — including how to move from 'have to' goals to 'want to' goals, and how small habit changes through “piggybacking” can create lasting transformation. The Dark Side of Health Misinformation: How Desperate People Get Exploited with Hannah McElhinney

In this powerful conversation, Osher Gunsberg sits down with journalist and author Hannah McElhinney to explore the complex world of chronic illness, medical misinformation, and what can happen when people lose trust in the systems designed to help them. Hannah shares the deeply personal story that inspired her latest book - the loss of her cousin Lauren, and the journey to understand how someone searching for answers to chronic pain and illness could become drawn into alternative treatments, online health communities, and misinformation. Having had his own experience with chronic pain, Osher and Hannah unpack the desperation that drives some people to seek out alternative solutions, the need to feel heard, and the longing for a diagnosis or treatment when conventional medicine doesn’t have easy answers. They also discuss health anxiety, patient mistrust, medical misogyny, systemic failures within healthcare systems, and how vulnerable people can be exploited by those offering certainty and “miracle” cures. Hannah and Osher also explore why empathy matters when talking about health misinformation — and why understanding someone’s experience is often the first step toward actually helping them find their way back to evidence-based care. Everything That's Wrong With Australian Politics And How to Fix It with Punter’s Politics

Why does it feel like political conversations have become so hostile? And why are so many Australians losing trust in politicians, the media, and the systems designed to represent them? In this episode, Osher Günsberg is joined by independent political commentator Konrad Benjamin, better known online as Punter’s Politics. From his beginnings as a high school teacher in Newcastle to building a massive online audience, Konrad has become known for cutting through political spin and explaining Australian political system in plain English.  Osher and Konrad explore the growing divide in modern political discourse (particularly surrounding left vs right polarisation), the rise of tribalism, and how social media algorithms push people into 'echo chambers' Konrad shares why he believes Australians are actually less divided than we’re often led to believe, and why issues like political corruption, lobbying, housing affordability, and the influence of money in politics are now uniting people across the political spectrum. They also discuss the 'revolving' door between politicians and staffers and the corporate industries they regulate, removing big money and corporate donations from politics, the dangers of treating political opponents as enemies, and the importance of empathy when engaging with people whose views differ from our own. Enjoyment Is Efficiency: The Productivity Shift That Changes Everything

In this episode, Osher revisits one of the most impactful conversations from the show with productivity expert and bestselling author Ali Abdaal. Ali breaks down a radically different approach to productivity — one built around enjoyment, play, and designing systems that actually work with your brain instead of against it. Osher and Ali explore why “enjoyment is efficiency,” how stress quietly sabotages performance, and why procrastination isn’t a character flaw - it’s usually just a systems problem. Ali also shares practical ways to make even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable, explains the difference between hardware and software problems in our lives, and reveals the simple tweaks that helped him stop wasting hours doomscrolling at night. It's an episode packed with practical tools for anyone feeling overwhelmed, burned out, distracted, or stuck in the cycle of trying harder and getting nowhere. Kids Don’t Need Perfect Parents, Just Present Ones with Lisa Taylor

Is the way we were brought up the best way to raise our kids today? In this deeply honest and insightful conversation, Osher speaks with family therapist, educator and author Lisa Taylor to explore the emotional patterns that shape family life — often without us even realising it. From childhood “heartprints” and generational conditioning to emotional regulation, repair and connection, Lisa explains why parenting is less about control and more about awareness. Lisa shares her own journey from overwhelmed young mum to one of Australia’s most trusted parenting voices, opening up about grief, perfectionism, anxiety and the moment she realised there had to be a better way to parent. She also unpacks why children’s behaviour is all about communication, how unresolved childhood experiences influence our reactions as parents, and why "rupture and repair" is an essential part of healthy relationships. This conversation also explores boundaries, teenage behaviour, emotional resilience, social media, discipline, and the pressure modern parents feel to “get it right, all the time". Whether you’re raising toddlers, teenagers, or reflecting on your own upbringing, this conversation offers practical tools, compassion and reassurance for anyone trying to build deeper connection within their family. The Lessons From Death That Will Change How You Live

What happens when you spend more than 20 years standing at the crossroads between life and death? You learn A LOT. In this powerful conversation, intensive care doctor and author Dr Matt Morgan shares the lessons he's taken from caring for hundreds of patients who have experienced cardiac arrest, near-death experiences, and life-changing moments in the ICU. Matt reveals the moments that have reshaped the way he thinks about regret, forgiveness, relationships, and what truly matters when everything else is stripped away. He also shares practical advice having witnessed people lose everything they thought defined them. In those moments, he's seen what remains: connection, love, memories, and meaning. The Mindset Behind Daniel MacPherson's Transformation for latest film 'Beast'

My guest this week is someone many Australians have grown up watching — perhaps on Neighbours, maybe on Dancing With The Stars, perhaps even Strike Back. Now Daniel MacPherson has taken on one of the most physically and emotionally demanding roles of his career for the film Beast. In this conversation, we go far beyond the world of film and television, delving into identity, fatherhood, mental health, discipline, addiction, physical resilience, reinventing yourself in your 40s, and what it's really like to work with Russell Crowe. Daniel opens up about the making of his new film Beast, the brutal physical preparation behind it, and why the story connected so deeply with him on a personal level. We also get into the realities of chasing purpose after success, the pressure many men carry silently, and the role movement, breathwork, training, and community can play in staying mentally strong. It's an honest, thoughtful, and surprisingly vulnerable chat with a guy who’s spent years pushing himself physically and creatively, and who’s now doing some of the best work of his life. What Would Dannii Minogue Do?: Two Showbiz Lessons For Everyday Life from the Aussie Icon

Watching the Kylie Minogue documentary on Netflix with Audrey the other night, I was so happy to see my friend (and Kylie's sister) Dannii Minogue appear. There was a time when I thought I knew all about Dannii - that was until I worked with her for the very first time in 2009. I had been called in at the very last minute to work with Dannii to cover a prominent breakfast radio shift, and was immediately blown away at how this incredible woman handled herself just with absolute grace, absolute commitment and focus at all times. I then had the pleasure of working with Dannii again on The Masked Singer Australia. I have learned so much from her. I continue to learn so much from her about what it is to show up, what it is to be in business, how one can stay afloat in times of uncertainty, how one can stay focused in times of pressure.  In this episode, I'm taking a look back at two big showbiz lessons Dannii shared with me on the show a few years ago. 'Comfort Is Holding You Back': Secrets to Growth and Confidence with Ant Williams

What if the key to a better life isn't avoiding discomfort - but actively seeking it? In this powerful conversation, Osher sits down with performance psychologist, leadership coach, and world-record holding freediver Ant Williams to explore why some of life's greatest breakthroughs happen when we step into fear rather than run from it. Drawing on decades of experience helping athletes, leaders, and high performers build their resilience, Ant shares remarkable stories from the extremes of human endurance, including deep ocean freediving, swimming beneath ice, encounters with sharks, and moments where staying calm was the difference between life and death. But this episode goes far beyond adventure - Ant also reveals practical strategies for managing anxiety, building resilience, handling difficult conversations, improving performance and developing the self-awareness needed to grow through life's challenges. He also opens up about leaving a fundamentalist church, overcoming fear-based thinking, and how deliberately embracing discomfort transformed his life. Whether you're navigating career pressure, parenting challenges, relationship struggles, or simply looking to become more mentally resilient, this conversation offers actionable tools to help you stay calm, focused, and confident when it matters most. What Gangsters and Hackers Can Teach As About Thriving in the Modern Economy

In a world where the old 'social contract' has been tossed out the window, where AI is taking over human resources and the 'traditional' path feels more like a dead end - where do you look for the new rules of survival?  Do you look to the old school executive leaders or do you look to the fringes, the creatives, the disruptors? Perhaps there are still ideas and business models which come from well outside the norm that can offer unconventional ways we could move ahead and possibly even achieve unreasonable results? In this episode, we’re looking back at my chat with economic historian and author of The Misfit Economy Alexa Clay, who spent years inside informal, grey, and black markets, talking to gang leaders, hackers, and pirates, and discovered that they weren't 'just criminals' - they were the most agile entrepreneurs on the planet. And while the story we’re often told about great business leaders is almost always 'the lone genius with a venture capital war chest', Alexa noticed that the most radical innovation happens when there is zero safety net. So could this 'grey market' be the blueprint for an increasingly uncertain economy? How Radio Star Robin Bailey Kept Going Through Unimaginable Grief - Twice

It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with Brisbane radio veteran Robin Bailey for a deeply honest and emotional conversation about the extraordinary highs and devastating lows of her life behind the microphone. I first met Robin in the mid-90s at B105 - I was the overnight guy, she was a new breakfast producer. From there, she quickly cemented herself as a staple and a survivor of the brutal commercial radio industry. In Brisbane alone, she's worked across three commercial station, been sacked at least three times (and most recently re-hired after a month thanks to listener backlash). But away from the microphone, Robin has endured a number of tragedies that many of us would struggle to come back from - and she's done it time and time again - all under the spotlight of her radio audience. In this conversation, Robin shares the moments that shaped her career - and her life. She opens up about losing her former husband Tony to suicide, then another husband Sean to cancer, raising three sons through grief, navigating public scrutiny, and why authenticity became her greatest strength. We also unpack memories of our radio careers, and how Robin would like to see the industry evolve, particularly for female presenters, producers and journalists. This is a raw, powerful and ultimately hopeful conversation about survival, healing and choosing love in the face of pain. And a note, this episode deals with suicide, mental health and grief. How to Communicate Better in Every Conversation with Jefferson Fisher

In this episode, trial lawyer and communication expert Jefferson Fisher explores the real art of communication — from difficult conversations and emotional regulation to ego, relationships and the hidden psychology behind how we speak to one another. Drawing on his experience as a courtroom advocate and one of the internet’s most trusted voices on communication, Jefferson shares practical insights into staying calm under pressure, handling conflict without escalation, and learning how to truly listen. Together, Jefferson and I unpack why so many of us struggle with communication, how our upbringing shapes the way we argue and connect, and what happens when we replace human connection with screens and text messages. We also cover the prevalence of public speaking anxiety, emotional intelligence, humility and the importance of curiosity over ego. Along the way, Jefferson offers simple but powerful tools for navigating heated moments, understanding what people really mean beneath their words, and becoming more intentional in the way we show up for others. Movember: The Simple Idea That Changed The Face Of Men's Health

In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, we revisit a powerful conversation with Adam Garone, co-founder of Movember, to explore how one of the world’s most successful grassroots movements began not with a strategy or manifesto, but with a simple dare among friends. What started in a Melbourne backyard as a playful challenge to bring back the moustache quickly evolved into a global campaign for men’s health. Over time, Movember has grown into a worldwide movement spanning more than 20 countries, engaging millions of participants and raising over a billion dollars for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health initiatives. This episode unpacks the surprising mechanics behind Movember’s success: why playfulness can be more powerful than seriousness in capturing attention, how trust and community participation fuel organic growth, and why the organisation’s biggest innovation may be treating participants not as audiences, but as co-creators of the movement. We also hear how Movember has helped reshape medical research itself—connecting previously isolated researchers across the globe and fostering collaboration that accelerates breakthroughs in men’s health. It's a conversation about rethinking how change happens, and challenging the idea that movements need perfection or authority to begin. Instead, curiosity, connection, and a bit of irreverence can actually drive real-world impact. The Reality of Living In The Outback: Brendan Cullen's Journey from Pain to Purpose

Australia’s outback is world-renowned for it’s beauty, it’s uniqueness and it’s people. But what often isn’t spoken about is the sheer isolation living in these remote communities. My guest on this episode is a man who has lived at the extremes — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Brendan Cullen has lived his life on the land. He’s navigated childhood trauma, isolation, depression and alcohol dependency - and come out the other side a better person and a better father. In this conversation, Brendan opens up about the moment things caught up with him - when the mental load eventually became too heavy to carry alone and he could no longer wear the mask. He talks about the reality of living with depression, the brutal isolation of the rural Australia, and what it took to finally ask for help. He also talks about finally finding purpose, and how he managed to train to swim the English Channel in the middle of the outback. It’s a candid yet important look at mental health, particularly in rural communities where silence and self-reliance are often the status quo. Brendan stands as a beacon of resilience forged the hard way, and proof asking for help can make a real difference. Anger Is Not Failure: Rethinking Motherhood with Lauren Novak

One of the hardest parts of parenting is one not many people talk about. In this episode, we dive into the reality of “mum rage” — the intense, often shame-filled anger that can surface in the daily grind of parenting. Lauren Novak is a journalist, author and mum herself. Her new book 'Melt Down' explores the raw and often unspoken angry emotions that many mothers go through, yet few feel safe admitting.  This honest and deeply personal conversation explores the gap between what we’re told parenting should feel like, and the pressure-filled reality it often is. We unpack the invisible mental load, the impact of sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and the relentless demands that can push even the most loving parents to breaking point. You’ll also hear about the anger–guilt cycle, why it happens, and how it can quietly erode wellbeing if left unspoken. If you’ve ever felt overstretched, overstimulated, or just not good enough as a parent, this conversation will feel both validating and illuminating. Because the truth is: you’re not the only one — and talking about it might be the first step to changing it. Better Make it Quick: Dr Ian Chung

Dr Ian Chung has been practising for nearly fifty years in Sydney, Australia. We’ll get into his story shortly - however, he made a name for himself as "Dr Rock”, the doctor to call when you have a major international performer that can’t make the show and there are 20,000 people who have bought tickets and are on the way to the gig as you speak. That’s when you called Dr Chung. If you’ve read my book, you’ll know how I came to meet him - but I can’t tell you how glad I am that I did. Not only was he and the first doctor to diagnose me with social phobia (which was the first time everything started to make sense) but he was the first doctor that I saw about my head that taught me real skills to deal with what was happening rather than just talk about it. I’ll never forget when Dr Chung got angry at me when I told him I’d rather have a few beers to calm down my anxiety than take antidepressants, and it was his anger and frustration that shook me out of my stubbornness and lead me to take those meds - which not only gave me incredible relief but made me lament refusing them when I was first offered them nearly ten years beforehand. A quick note - just because Ian helped me, doesn’t mean he’s the only person who can help. I’ve had many doctors since Ian and they’ve all helped me get where I am and stay where I am today - he’s just the one who set the standard to which I held all other doctors accountable to. There are many, many excellent doctors who can help you if you need help. It’s important to allow time to find them. You might not click straight away, it might not work for you, that’s ok - they’ll work for someone else and that’s fine. It’s important to keep trying, keep trying to find the doctor that you click with, one you can trust, one that makes you want to do what they tell you to do. Because if you’re at the point where you're seeing a Dr, you’re at the point where your ideas have run out of usefulness. So be quiet, listen to what they tell you to do, and do it. And it was in doing what I was told by Doctors that helped me get to a place where I’m a lot healthier than where I once was. It’s not hyperbole to say that Dr Chung changed my life - and I am so very grateful that you now get the chance to hear the story of this incredible man. Ladies and Gentlemen, Dr Ian Chung. Tickets for live shows are here:MelbourneSydneyStay up to date on more upcoming shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else?
