Beyond Streets

Rethinking How We Move, Build, and LiveBeyond Streets explores the everyday impact of transportation on our lives, neighborhoods, and futures. More than roads and rails, transportation is a mirror of our values — safety, connection, opportunity, and access. In each episode, we go beyond the headlines and into communities, talking with organizers, policymakers, builders, and residents who are reimagining what it means to move through the world. From housing to health, climate to equity, we uncover how smarter, people-first transportation can unlock better futures — and what’s standing in the way. If you're ready to ask bold questions, challenge ineffective systems, and explore what's truly possible, you're in the right place.

Pilots, Progress, and the Future of NYC Transportation with Arthur Getman

In this episode, Sam Roxas and co-host Greg Rodriguez sit down with transportation planner/data engineer (and new parent!) Arthur Getman to unpack how practical, measurable street fixes in NYC ripple out nationwide and what the next NYC administration must do next.We get into:Why “small wins” (LPIs, hardened centerlines, slow-turn wedges) add up to big safety gains and how they scaled from pilots to citywide programs. The quick-build playbook: paint, posts, and proof before pouring concrete.Queens Boulevard’s transformation and what a real feedback loop with communities looks like.Data as narrative: defining success with the public before you design.Future of NYC: the first 100 days playbook for a new mayor + DOT leader -- clear metrics, faster buses, relentless community comms, and a commissioner who blends vision with operations. The “free and fast buses” debate, trade-offs, and why speeds often improve when fares disappear. How big-city choices (busways, plazas, congestion pricing) ripple to every other cityPractical, not precious. Can Abundance be... Abundant? With Tahra Hoops and Gary Winslett from the Chamber of Progress and The Rebuild

In this kickoff episode of our Abundance series, we’re asking the big question: Can abundance actually be abundant? We’re unpacking the buzzy optimism of Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s “abundance agenda” and confronting the messy realities of implementing it. From housing fights in California to cost-of-living politics, and permitting bottlenecks to the psychology of scarcity, our guests Tahra Hoops and Gary Winslett of the Chamber of Progress (and writers of The Rebuild) join us to explore what it takes to move from rhetoric to results.Together, we question whether abundance can scale beyond think pieces, and how cities, states, and everyday people can actually build toward a future where “enough for everyone” isn’t just a slogan. Because right now, as Sam puts it, “we’re barely scratching the surface of what abundance means in practice.”Help us grow: please rate, review, and subscribe! Reach out with questions, ideas, and feedback: [email protected] up with us on LinkedIn: Greg RogersGreg Rodriguez Samantha Roxaswww.beyondstreets.org

COME CORRECT: Oakland's Warren Logan on making cities work and building better partnerships, block by block

Warren Logan doesn’t just talk about change, he clears the path for it. Whether it’s translating between city departments and private developers, batch-submitting 311 requests, or reworking zoning rules down to the inch, this man makes room for progress in places where inertia and red tape usually wins.As the Director of Government Partnerships and Community Affairs for the Northlake project and Principal Advisor at Progress Public Affairs, Warren is helping reshape how cities and private partners collaborate. In this episode, we dig into how he's transforming a once-overlooked stretch of downtown into a neighborhood that actually works for people. It’s not magic—it’s a well-functioning, healthy risk-taking, sandbox. One where the public sector gets support, the private sector shows up with more than capital, and everyone involved knows what role they play.We talk about creating safe spaces for risk, building shared vision across sectors, and what happens when you design a process that helps every partner do their job better. The Safe System Approach & Putting Vision Zero Into Action - Jonathan Adkins, GHSA

American roads are becoming more dangerous for everyone – especially those traveling on foot, in a wheelchair, and on a bike. Jonathan Adkins, CEO of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), joined us to discuss the need for widespread adoption of the Safe System Approach, putting Vision Zero into action, the greater risks that larger vehicle designs pose to vulnerable road users, and why Al Roker, one of America's favorite TV personalities, has become a champion for walking. We interviewed Jonathan ahead of GHSA's Annual Meeting in New York City from August 13-16, so we were also able to get a sneak peek at the safety topics that will be discussed at the conference. In this episode, we explored...- The national challenge of improving traffic safety. The U.S. finally has a national goal of zero traffic deaths through the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy – but in the same year that was released, we hit a 16-year high in traffic deaths. Fatalities have exceeded 40,000 for the past two years, reaching levels we haven't seen since before the Great Recession. - Pedestrian fatalities are at a 41-year high, and increasing faster than all other traffic-related deaths. See GHSA's latest pedestrian safety report here: https://www.ghsa.org/resources/Pedestrians23- The Safe System Approach, which has been adopted by USDOT, presents actionable strategies for enhancing traffic safety by looking at the entire system rather than addressing individual contributors to risk. Operationalizing AV Safety with Nat Beuse, Aurora (TRB ARTS 2023)

Building a safe autonomous vehicle isn’t just about installing sensors and programming software – it’s about building a safety culture, operationalizing safety processes, and communicating safety approaches to the public. It’s a massive undertaking, and even harder to translate into terms that most people can understand, which is why we made it a priority to catch up with Nat Beuse, Chief Safety Officer at Aurora, during TRB ARTS. In this episode, Greg Rogers and guest co-host Sophie Jantz speak with Nat Beuse about:-A day in the life of Nat Beuse as Aurora’s Chief Safety Officer-Why Aurora publicly published its AV Safety Case Framework-The importance of a strong safety culture, safety management systems, and operationalizing safety across an AV company-Voluntary standards development-The past, present, and future of the AV industryResourcesLearn more about Aurora here: https://aurora.tech/ See Aurora’s public safety case framework here: https://safetycaseframework.aurora.tech/gsn Follow Nat on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nat-beuse-9691baa As always, you can follow The Mobility Podcast on Twitter: @MobilityPodcast, @MoveGreg, @Pete_Gould, @SmarterTranspo.Help us grow: please rate, review, and subscribe! Reach out with questions, ideas, and feedback: [email protected] up with us on LinkedIn: Greg RogersGreg Rodriguez Samantha Roxaswww.beyondstreets.org

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Rethinking How We Move, Build, and LiveBeyond Streets explores the everyday impact of transportation on our lives, neighborhoods, and futures. More than roads and rails, transportation is a mirror of our values — safety, connection, opportunity, and access. In each episode, we go beyond the headlines and into communities, talking with organizers, policymakers, builders, and residents who are reimagining what it means to move through the world. From housing to health, climate to equity, we uncover how smarter, people-first transportation can unlock better futures — and what’s standing in the way.
