Seed & Soil - The Kingdom Life
Recorded May 2, 2004 Bob recalls his early days growing up on a 300 acre dairy farm in W. NY state, where he learned about the soil, gardening, and farming. It was a transition time for farmers -from horses to tractors. Many changes from a corn planter they had that was 8’ wide to ones now that are 35’ wide and plant 25 acres an hour. Jesus used many parables, and one was about the seed where the soil determines the crop. One insight Bob had was “Can the farmer or the kingdom member do anything about the soil?” He had yet to hear a message on it! Bob feels it is possible for the kingdom member to prepare the soil with loving relationships. It would help the one who receives the word to accept it and grow. Then he asks “What can I do to make those who receive the Word to accept it and grow?”

Message on John 15 / Guess what?
Recorded April 13, 2003 Our grandson, Henry, 5 at the time, often would say “Guess what, Grandpa!”, then answer his own question. Bob uses that phrase often in this message on John 15. We had gone to an Alison Krauss concert with backstage passes Lori had given us, and Bob enjoyed talking with her band member, Ron Block, who wrote songs that we really appreciated about his spiritual journey with God. Also, one phrase that Bob appreciated from Dallas Willard was: “We are all unceasing spiritual beings with an eternal destiny, and we never stop existing…” and Guess what? “You can do nothing about it.” Only thing is to choose your destination. He also shares about the vine and branches Jesus talked about in John 15 by using an illustration from the Grape Belt where we were from in W. NY state.

A heartburn we all need
Recorded May 6, 2001 Bob starts by asking how to spell relief from heartburn or pain. Many people are stressed out by their jobs, but as he said, “I’ve been in ministry for 41 years and never have thought about taking a sabbatical.” He gives steps to go from a beating heart to a burning heart, and he lists three places where we can get enlightenment today. A heart that is concerned about the spiritual need of those around us is essential to reaching out to them. “You can’t keep something inside if it’s burning.”

Love - It's the Greatest
Recorded February 14, 1993 I Corinthians 13. Why is love the greatest? It moved God to do the unthinkable, it challenges us to do the impossible, it enables us to face the unknowns and fears of life, and motivates us to take positive action. Bob shares about our love and commitment to each other in our marriage.

Keys to happiness
Recorded March 13, 1988Pascal said “All men seek happiness.” It is found only in God Himself. As C. S. Lewis said, “God finds great pleasure in seeing us happy.” Our delight in the Lord will increase as we are fed by God’s Word, follow the leading of His Spirit, and spread God’s Good News. Ends with a thought provoking poem by Tim Hansel: “Pedal.”

When Fantasies Meet Reality
Date: 8/22/04A humorous start as Bob shares how he grew up with the Lone Ranger and how he rode his horse on his farm trying to bring that character into his life. Today we live in a world of fantasy--unrestrained imagination. We forget reality and the laws of nature. When Jesus walked on water to where the disciples were struggling in a storm, we don't know if He meant to join them or to walk on by. When Jesus passes by, what is our cry for help? He doesn't need our help to get from point A to point B. But we need His help to get from point B (birth) to D (death) to E (eternity).

Father's Day
Date: 6/15/03What do fathers think about on Father's Day? A lot about memories, and he asked several men to share (they were not on the microphone so difficult to hear). Bob gives advice beginning with being as positive as you can be to anticipate your children's next stage of life. Fathers should demonstrate a strong relational quality to give courage, hope, and confidence to their children. Much of a child's sense of spirituality comes from the father.

Kingdom Living in a Secular Culture
Date: 7/13/03Matthew 5: "You are the light of the world--let your light shine so they will praise your Father in heaven." Jesus left a powerful impact on His culture. He addressed the total needs of people: mental, social, spiritual, and physical. People should be able to see kingdom living in our life. Bob's life verse was Colossians 3:17. It guided him throughout his life. Illustration of the difference between the Teton mountains and the Alps.

The Secret of Love
Date: 2/9/03Do we have love figured out? I John 4:16-17: God is love. Jesus knew how to live life perfectly. He is the best model to follow. Bob gives 3 things to avoid, also 3 conditions to desire. One of the most important actions we do as kingdom members is to encourage one another to let God's love flow through us to others. Bob's favorite songwriter and singer was Ron Block, and he often read the words of Ron's song, "I'm not holding on to Jesus--He's holding on to me."

Harvest Workers--Paid and Volunteer
Date: 1/22/03Bob shares the challenge of the harvest on a farm (knowing when the harvest is ready) and how it applies to the importance of reaching out to our harvest--lost people. We need to come alongside people and introduce them to Jesus. What does it take to be a harvester? Illustration of Timothy (Philippians 2:19-22) and how he took a genuine interest in people. Are we prepared and willing to go to the fields and win people for the Lord?

The Significance of Christmas
Date: 12/8/02Just as we sing lullabies to our children to put them to sleep, Bob feels that Christians are being rocked to sleep concerning what Christmas is all about. Merchants open their doors early, stay open late. Materialism seems to take the place of the real meaning of the season. The story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19 shares the reason why Jesus came: to seek and save the lost. He came to provide abundant life and to make it possible for us to go to Heaven.

Confidence--Should a Christian Have It?
Date: 8/18/02In what are you confident? Confidence is a firm belief, trust, reliance, certainty, and assurance. Jesus said, "Come and follow Me." Following Jesus is an either/or commitment--not both/and. Illustration from a Colorado Caravan comparing a drought to a tree planted by the water. Also, ways you can see or experience the Royal Gorge. Don't let fear and doubt enter in. Satan tries to give us doubts. Following Jesus brings confidence.

Renovation from the Inside Out
Date: 7/7/02Comparing the renovation of a house to the renovation of our heart, Bob starts by sharing steps that must be made to turn a "handyman special" into your dream home. We need three things: a vision, intention, and means--or "VIM." A house has no power to renovate itself...the same is true of our heart. Jesus modeled for us life as life was meant to be--not just going to heaven, but living life here on earth to the fullest.

This Makes Sense
Date: 11/25/01Some things just make sense. If we treat people like we want to be treated, we should be able to get along. Jesus is the greatest leader Who ever lived. Get to know Him. Bob gives a fascinating illustration on windmills and how it applies to our lives. He ends the message with another great account of someone challenging a speaker who claimed there was no resurrection.

What it Means to Follow Jesus
Date: 8/12/01YFC Caravans started in 1972. This year Bob was the speaker and over 200 students came. He spoke on Jesus the Creator, the Healer, the Rescuer, Lord, and Friend. The commitment to follow someone is not frivolous. You cannot do it half-heartedly. Following Jesus is an adventure. Bob gives a great illustration of God's protection while on this Caravan. Near the end of Bob's message, he shares this truth for us: "The closer I am to Jesus, the better off I'll be."

The Master's School of Life
Date: 10/15/2000A humorous illustration of the difference between a 7th grade track meet and the athletes winning Olympic gold...also a beginning violin player and a concert violinist. Those who make great accomplishments all started as beginners, then worked hard and made a commitment to excel. Are we willing to learn from Jesus in His school of life? We will never get lost if we follow the right Person.

Things to Ponder
Date: 7/9/2000Illustration from illusionist Andre Kole and insights Bob got in a class at Regent College by Dr. Dallas Willard, also from his trip to Italy. One of the most important things to ponder is the greatness of God, also the principle of domain. One challenge Dr. Willard gave was to learn to say: "I need to live my life as Jesus would live my life if He were me."

Reflections of a Sojourner
Date: 8/22/99A sojourner is someone who is on the move. We need to see life through God's perspective. Life is a journey--not a trip...Life is about fruit and not leaves...Life is about the eternal and not the temporal. Our bodies are wasting away, but what's happening on the inside is most important.

The Difference a Mother Makes
Date: 5/9/99Bob shares seven ways Mothers touch our lives. They are nurturers, playmates, teachers, encouragers, among others, and in many other ways they make a difference. As a child runs to a parent with outstretched arms, God desires to take us in His arms.

Jesus--a Man in the Know
Date: 8/24/97People know about certain things. Jesus knew about life. He knew where He came from and where He was going, that the Father had given Him authority over all things, and when His time had come. He made it possible for us to know Him and to go with Him when we die. Now that we know these things, we should experience life as God meant it to be.

Bottom Line
Date: June 1996Bartering is a way of buying in some cultures. Finally, you agree on a price: the bottom line. "The simplest and most basic truth about a given situation." There are 3 bottom line virtues to please God and be approved by Him: righteousness, peace, and joy.

Our Church
Date: 5/26/96Bob starts by telling about his family and how members of a family contribute to the home. Our church is more than a building but a family. We need to provide a positive atmosphere for seekers to know and believers to grow...to provide opportunities for people to serve...and worship experiences to glorify and lift up God.

God's Favorite Word
Date: 3/19/95Find out what Bob thinks is God's favorite word. God's invitations are motivated by love, for everyone, and to receive what we need...forgiveness, a mission, rest, and hope beyond this life. It demands an either/or response. I John 5: He who has the Son has eternal life.
-

Why Ask Why?
Date: 3/28/93A tragedy causes us to ask "why?" It forces us to consider the important issues of life--to look beyond ourselves. We can see how it looks, but God alone knows the whole picture. In Matthew 4, Jesus was tempted, but He said "Man shall not live on bread alone..." Bread represents what we can do for ourselves. The Word is what God can do for us. Bob shares his own testimony and the verse that guided his life: Colossians 3:17.

I wish I had--I'm glad I did
Date: 3/29/92Life is full of choices. The consequences are like this title. Everyone can say "I'm glad I did" if they do 3 things:Be wise by preparing for the future--think beyond the now; Be ready for the situation; Prepare for your eternal future. Make each day count.

When Jesus Passes By
Date: 8/26/90Begins with a report on YFC World Congress in Kenya with 52 nations represented. The theme: One Message, one family, and one Lord. During DC 88, President Reagan was introduced to the delegates, and they were very impressed with him. When Jesus passes by, what is our reaction? Ends with an illustration by Ravi Zacharias.

Competent to Minister (No resume needed)
Date: 5/15/88Scripture: II Corinthians 3What qualifies us to minister? First, our availability. It is not dependent on past behavior. The past is forgiven, and the new has come. Is God's "to do" list for us getting done? He gives us faith and love--it needs to show itself in our everyday relationships. When God is at work in us, it will be seen.

Mother's Day Message
Date: 5/8/88Scripture: Luke 2:41-52 "To do" lists: Moms use them more than others. What do Mothers do? They treasure things in their heart...they care for their children...pray for their children, among many other things. How does a Mom do these things? Their work produced by faith, labor prompted by love, and endurance inspired by hope.

Be Still, My Soul (Why am I here?)
Date: 3/6/88Scripture: Acts 16:16-34 Using illustrations from his Army days and other experiences, Bob says we often ask: "Why am I here?" then "And now what?" You know you're right with God when you find yourself singing praise to God when things aren't going your way. Ask: "Who will my life impact this week?"
