#110 Love, Sex, but no Dhoka Part II

Hello Boju Bajai fam, nearly five years after the अपार सफलता of our episode Love, Sex but no Dhoka, we’re back with Part II! We couldn’t have imagined this in the pandemic world of 2021 but - spoilers alert - dating apps kind of suck now. There’s so much talk about burnout and fatigue amongst millennials and Gen-Zs who are, of course, our target demographic, and we felt compelled to look into the matter. So, in this episode, we discuss the diminishing marginal utility of dating apps and the alternative to an increasingly enshittified digital space, and hear from some current and former app users along the way. You can listen to part one of Love, Sex, but no Dhoka, when things were simpler and the world of online dating felt more hopeful ;p https://open.spotify.com/episode/7aBPJP3dFi5NBjwZoKua2l?si=a0vm9IzGTCy8Y1ykE5Lftg Reporter: Nikita TripathiEditor and Boju Bajai theme music: Flekke :Disclaimer: Some names have been withheld or changed to protect the privacy of those who agreed to speak with us. :References (in order of mention):Why people have fallen out of love with dating apps, The Economist, August 2024 https://www.economist.com/business/2024/08/08/why-people-have-fallen-out-of-love-with-dating-appsDating App Revenue and Usage Statistics (2026), Business of Apps, April 2026 https://www.businessofapps.com/data/dating-app-market/People are dumping Tinder. #107: Will Balen govern better than he raps?

Nepal held its historic election on March 5, and today, on March 27 , former Kathmandu mayor/rapper/structural engineer, 35-year-old Balendra Shah aka Balen will be sworn in as the country’s prime minister, marking a generational break. #MillennialRepresent. In this episode, we speak with journalist/researcher/urban studies graduate/rap music को ज्ञाता friend Nikita Tripathi for some chunaab chirfaar and discuss our hopes for a new Nepal. We hope the new guard—overwhelmingly male (and as populist as they come) — which has promised a “Nepal 2.0,” will respect the constitution, mend its old ways by ensuring equitable and meaningful representation by making room for more women and people from marginalised to thrive in national politics. Also, please less theatrics and more work and room for dialogue. We hope the geruwa effect from across the border doesn’t last beyond Balen’s swearing in ceremony. #SecularismFTWOnly then, will the Nepal’s fifty percent population (the Kylies, the sailis, the mailis et all ) might consider forgiving Balen for his not so savage verses about “sundress to undress to fundraise” 🙃🙃 IYKYK!—---Read and subscribe to our newsletter Cold Takes by Boju Bajai https://bojubajai.substack.com/p/take....Boju Bajai regularly works with reporters and researchers to bring compelling audio stories that center and amplify women’s experiences. #103 Guff Gaff with Sukmit Gurung

    Introducing our series “Rewind with Boju Bajai” where we talk about all things nostalgia. And in this episode, we take a walk down memory lane with singer Sukmit Gurung, Nepal’s OG pop music icon. Sukmit Gurung talks about her childhood in Sikkim, getting a break as a teenager to sing alongside Om Bikram Bista, shifting trends in Nepali music and four decades of singing and performing for Nepali audiences around the world. Also, please watch more episode of our series on nostalgia. - Where did Wave magazine go? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOg75WdVLqk&t=1s- Raja Aau, for real? 🙃 The not-so-Royal Nepal of the 90s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glhIs1vs5OIFollow Boju Baja wherever you are:Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/bojubajaiInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bojubajai/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bojubajaiTikTok: @bojubajaiTwitter: https://x.com/bojubajaiSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/bojubajai-------Credits:Camera: Bikram Rai, Elite JoshiResearch: Reena MoktanVideo music: Good Days by Yung Logos / @yunglogos Video of Sukmit Gurung singing Pal Pal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B42xKKSKvkVideo of Sukmit Gurung at Golden Kite Festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV5AGPSid68Video of Sukmit Gurung singing “Timilai Hasera” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqlMUzXE2Go

    Where did Wave magazine go?

Wave was the most popular English language magazine among young Nepali readers in the 1990s and the 2000s. Launched in 1994, Wave became an instant hit because of its fresh take on music, fashion, youth culture and the concerns of young urban Nepalis. And remember the iconic lyrics book with guitar chords (this was when the internet wasn’t as accessible) and the glossy poster of international musicians that came with the magazine every month! It was also one of the very few and first Nepali media outlets to have a vibrant online presence through its website. Sadly, much of it is no longer available in the public domain. In this first episode of our brand new series called “Rewind with Boju Bajai” we sat down with Wave magazine’s founding editor Yubakar, assistant editor Tsering Choden, and Shashank Shrestha, who interned there. We asked them about their time at Wave, their favorite/most memorable cover stories, and what they most fondly recall about working at Nepal’s most iconic youth magazine. New Year, Same Ol’ Nostalgia

Introducing our new series “Rewind with Boju Bajai” where we talk about all things nostalgia.  In this episode, writer Anbika Giri and computer scientist/educator Dr. Dovan Rai talk about growing up in Nepal in the 90s, where access to media and information was limited to Saturday films on Nepal Television, music videos on Image Channel, renting VHS tapes and a handful of magazines. They also reflect on their formative experiences during the years of political upheaval in Nepal, from Panchayat rule to multi-party democracy, followed by the Maoist insurgency, King Gyanendra’s direct rule to Nepal’s historic transition to a federal republic. This episode was recorded in 2024 so it doesn’t contain any reference to the recent raja baddies protest in Nepal. This episode is part of our new series “Rewind with Boju Bajai”. The first video in the series explores the origin story of Wave magazine. UAF_EP1: ‘A’ for Activism

Care at the Centre: Voices from the Majority World At the heart of this series is care - the life-affirming, life-sustaining practice of honouring our interconnected relationships and our commitment to the wellbeing of ourselves, our environments, and each other. But in an increasingly hostile world, how do women, trans, and non-binary activists in the world visualize care and protection today at both the individual and organizational level? What are the specific risks to the lives and works of activists, human rights defenders and advocates from the majority world, and how do activists imagine and practice care in their unique contexts and locations? These are some of the questions we will explore in this six-part series on care produced by Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific. In the first episode of the series, we will talk about what it is that makes activists continue relentlessly on their paths, despite the risks, the challenges, and the threats they encounter on a daily basis by reflecting on their personal experiences and their socio-political and cultural locations and contexts that shaped their personhood and their activisms. Our gratitude to artists and activists from Nepal who lend their voices to bring to life the experiences and testimonies of activists featured in the Urgent Action Fund report - “How Can We Ground Ourselves in Care and Dance Our Revolution”. #81: Everyday is not Women’s Day (Re-release)

It’s that time of the year again! What are we marching for this year? Re-releasing this episode from a few years ago because, well… we are so tired of telling people to stop telling us “everyday is women’s day” when clearly it’s not, especially not in Nepal! Just look at how the Nepali state treats women - Nepali women are unequal by law because of the discriminatory citizenship provision in the constitution, the judiciary mostly takes side of male perpetrators in cases of sexual violence against women, and Nepali women’s mobility for better job opportunities abroad is severely restricted. So here’s our “tyaaau tyaaau” once again reminding everyone that giving women’s day discounts and a public holiday on March 8th will not make the world a better place for us womaniyas! Hope you enjoy this episode! #75 Abortion Rights in Nepal, Part 2

Abortion is legal in Nepal, but it is still criminalised. What does this mean for reproductive justice and what impact does it have on the reproductive health of women? Why are women still being driven to seek unsafe abortions? Why does our society still view abortion as something shameful and how does that affect the health and mental wellbeing of women? Reporter Srijana Khadka speaks to healthcare workers from Ramechhap and Syangja about the degree of safety and level of access of abortion services available to women. She also interviews the Executive Director of FWLD and leading advocate Sabin Shrestha who has been working in the area of legalisation and decriminalisation of abortion. This is the second part of our series on abortion rights in Nepal. We discuss about the cultural attitudes surrounding abortion in our homes, families and hospitals, and what that means for young Nepali women when they seek such services. And how does American politics around abortion rights actually could have an impact down the line in countries like Nepal.
