This love for wrestling ignited at a young age, as he watched his dad’s VHS tapes and became a self-proclaimed Hulkamaniac.  CAM!!ikaze recalls how he was initially traumatized by wrestling moments, particularly those involving Jake the Snake Roberts. CAM!!ikaze explains, reflecting on how he moved from mere entertainment to understanding the art of wrestling. It wasn’t until the late '90s, during the attitude era, that he found his footing again, inspired by legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. A pivotal moment was meeting a friend, Matt, who aspired to be a wrestler, which sparked CAM!!ikaze’s journey into the sport.At just 12 years old, CAM!!ikaze began his training in backyard wrestling, dubbing it *Crazy Mofo Wrestling*. “We practiced moves on a dummy and then on each other,” he says, laughing about the makeshift ring they created with garden hoses and steel posts. His backyard shows grew in attendance, culminating in 173 people showing up for his last event in 2004, which led to a noise complaint from the cops. “I had a golden childhood,” he reflects, grateful for the experiences that shaped him.Despite needing to be 18 to officially train, CAM!!ikaze was determined. He lied about his age and began his professional journey with Monster Pro Wrestling in Edmonton. “I hopped on a Greyhound bus with $500,” he shares, highlighting the leap of faith he took. His first match at 17 was a significant milestone, and he quickly realized the need for professional training. “I was like a sponge,” he says of his time under the tutelage of Chi Chi Cruz, absorbing everything he could.CAM!!ikaze debuted in September 2005, adopting the ring name that would define his career. Initially wrestling with a mask, he had to adapt to the challenges it presented. “I thought I had terrible cardio, but it was because I was being suffocated,” he laughs, emphasizing the learning curve he faced. These batteries can overheat, leading to dangerous fires. "The battery itself can very easily overheat, creating heat faster than it can dissipate," she explains. The compact design of these batteries can turn them into a mini bomb when they malfunction.  To prevent overheating, Kelli provides several guidelines:  - **Use the Right Charger**: Always use the charger that comes with your device. Off-brand chargers can send the wrong voltage, causing fires. "Over 300 Apple chargers are on the market, but only three are certified," she warns.- **Charge Outside**: For larger devices like e-bikes and lawnmowers, charge them outside and away from doorways to prevent fires from spreading into your home.- **Monitor Charging**: Avoid leaving devices charging overnight. Set a timer to check on them instead.  The Importance of Recycling Batteries  Kelli emphasizes that all batteries, including AA and AAA, should be recycled properly. Fires in garbage trucks due to compacted batteries are a growing concern. "It's important that all batteries get recycled," she states. For safe storage, use a plastic container to avoid sparks and explosions. Serena recounted how she was "roped in" by a gym owner, who enthusiastically informed her of their participation. They’ve been training, albeit reluctantly, with a focus on building their endurance. "I don’t really run, but if it’s for a good cause, I’ll do it," Haylie admitted, highlighting the passion behind their motivation.Haylie and Serena are aiming to raise $5,000 for their team, a goal that reflects the overall ambition of the event to surpass previous years' fundraising achievements. As of now, they’ve raised $380, but they’re optimistic about reaching their target. "We’re hoping this podcast will help raise more funds," Serena said, underscoring their commitment to the cause. The Amazing Race for Hunger will take place on August 22nd, and while the exact challenges remain a mystery, the excitement is palpable. The opening ceremonies are just 10 days away! We had the pleasure of chatting with Gavin Harker, a passionate ambassador for the games, who shares his experiences as an athlete and a bocce player.Meet GavinGavin is one of six athlete ambassadors that have been promoting the games all around our community. Gavin has been part of the Special Olympics for three years, participating in sports like curling, basketball, bowling, and, of course, bocce. His enthusiasm is contagious as he describes how much joy he finds in being around other athletes. "It's very fun being around like other athletes, being around like other people. I’m very excited for this!"Learning BocceAs we step onto the bocce court, Gavin begins to teach us the fundamentals of the game.  "First, I'm gonna throw this. Call it the Piccolina. Just a little ball."The objective? Get the larger ball as close to the Piccolina as possible. Gavin explains, "Then you hope it doesn't go over that line."The game is simple yet strategic, and as Gavin guides us through the nuances, it becomes clear that bocce is as much about skill as it is about fun. The Game in ActionAs we play, laughter fills the air. Gavin encourages us with tips on throwing techniques and strategies. "You'd basically just throw it like a bowling ball if you have a regular bowl."The camaraderie among players is palpable, and Gavin’s infectious spirit makes it easy to see why bocce is such a beloved sport in the community. The slogan of the Games is “We shine together.” It was very apparent that Gavin was going to help us to not only learn the game but he made sure that we had fun together while playing.Final ThoughtsGavin's journey in Bocce is a testament to the joy of sports and community. Six years ago, Ivan Reimer, along with a team of passionate individuals, launched this initiative after recognizing the challenges faced by families with children suffering from rare diseases. The first benefactor was a young boy named Keilan, who was fighting VHL disease, a condition that leads to tumor growth in the body. The foundation’s efforts helped raise funds for his treatment, and since then, it has continued to grow, now registered as a charitable organization.The foundation organizes annual charity motorcycle rides, where participants come together to raise funds. Local businesses, community members, and even children contribute to the cause, showcasing that it truly takes a village to support those in need. In the latest charity ride, the foundation raised an astounding $118,613.40 in just three months, underscoring the generosity of the community, even amidst economic challenges. Fundraising is a collective effort, with various activities contributing to the cause. From pancake breakfasts sponsored by local hotels to live auctions featuring unique items, every dollar raised counts. The stories of the children who benefit from the Ridin' for Kids Foundation are nothing short of inspirational. For instance, this year’s benefactor, four-year-old Emerson Wikkerink, will receive motorized legs to aid his mobility and motor skills. These devices are crucial for children with similar conditions, helping prevent muscle atrophy and enhancing their quality of life. His experiences in the Canadian Winter Games, where he met Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, further fueled his dedication to boxing. After years as a boxer, Wade was introduced to refereeing by his mentor, Bill Page. Wade quickly found success, working his first national championships just a few years later in 1989.Wade took a ten-year hiatus from officiating to focus on family life after his daughter was born in 1992. However, in 2002, he returned to boxing, motivated by his son’s interest in the sport. Wade’s experience and dedication allowed him to seamlessly reintegrate into the boxing community, further establishing his reputation as a skilled referee and judge.Throughout his career, Wade has officiated numerous national and international competitions, eventually earning the opportunity to referee at the Olympic level. These women recently participated in the students artists in residence program at Medalta.Anaies began her journey with ceramics almost by accident. Initially enrolling in a ceramic class for fun, she quickly discovered that her passion for painting was overshadowed by her love for working with clay. The tactile nature of ceramics and the continuous engagement it requires allowed her to immerse herself fully in the medium. Charlotte says working with clay can be very grounding and meditative. She notes that ceramics can transform people and places. When people see her art they gravitate towards it and want to touch it. She says this is a great way of sharing. During her time in Medicine Hat she has been inspired by the horse. She notes that horses are able to do incredible labour and yet in her art she purposefully elongates their legs to symbolize their fragility.The women emphasized the importance of collaboration during their residency. Working with fellow students, they shared knowledge and ensured that everyone was well-rested and supported during the labour-intensive firing processes. This sense of community fostered a nurturing environment where they could learn and grow together.What makes this program stand out is that it is the only one of its kind in Canada. Many people don't realize that rattlesnakes often find their way into residential areas, prompting fear and concern. She realized that there was a gap in consistent coverage for snake relocations, which often fell to local law enforcement or bylaw officers, who could be unavailable when needed. With the necessary permits, she began providing a valuable service to the community. As she worked, she found that education was just as crucial as relocation. People needed to understand the behaviour of snakes, why they pose little threat when left undisturbed, and how to create safer environments for both humans and snakes. Sheri’s mission expanded to include educational outreach, helping people to appreciate these creatures rather than fear them.One of the most challenging aspects of her work involves finding suitable release spots for the snakes she relocates. Rattlesnakes have a strong homing instinct, and if they are moved too far from their capture site, they can become disoriented and unable to find their way back to their dens. The law requires that she release them within 100 meters of where they were found, but with urban expansion and habitat loss, finding a proper location can be very difficult. Education is at the heart of what Sheri does. It’s not just about relocating snakes; it’s about changing perceptions. To facilitate this, Sheri offers training to various groups, including biologists and law enforcement, on safe handling practices. Using fragile items like eggs or ripe tomatoes as practice tools helps trainees learn the right amount of pressure to apply without harming the snake. Additionally, she shares knowledge about the ecological role of snakes, their behaviours, and the importance of preserving their habitats.
