Burnout Banter - The Mid Year Trap: Why We Always Feel Behind - S4Ep6
By the middle of the year, something interesting happens. Whether we intend to or not, we start keeping score. We think back to January. The goals we set. The habits we wanted to build. The projects we hoped to finish. The person we thought we'd be by now. And for many ambitious professionals, one thought quietly begins to take over: "I'm behind." Behind at work. Behind on personal goals. Behind financially. Behind compared to other people. But what if that feeling has less to do with reality than it does with the way we're measuring progress? In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff Visnic and Rachelle Ray explore why the midpoint of the year often becomes a psychological trap—and why so many capable, successful people feel like they're falling short even when they're making meaningful progress. Together, they unpack the hidden pressure created by expectations, comparison, constantly moving the goalposts, and measuring ourselves against scorecards that may no longer reflect the life we're actually trying to build. You'll hear: Why June naturally becomes a time of self-evaluation The difference between being behind and feeling behind How comparison quietly distorts our perception of progress Why ambitious people rarely feel like they've done enough How outdated expectations create unnecessary stress A healthier way to evaluate progress and realign for the second half of the year This conversation isn't about lowering your standards. It's about making sure you're measuring your life against the right things. Because maybe you're not actually behind. Maybe you're just using a ruler that no longer fits who you've become. Join us monthly on Burnout Banter as we showcase and share the stories and insights of marketing professionals and technical teams in the construction industry. We aim to shed light on issues such as miscommunication, stress, and burnout. Please email us any burning questions you would like us to answer at [email protected].

Burnout Banter - The Cost of Constant Threat: How Fear Fuels Burnout
We live in a world where fear is constant. Breaking news alerts. Economic uncertainty. Layoffs. Political division. Artificial intelligence. Industry disruption. And for many people, the exposure never really stops. What most people don't realize is that the human nervous system was never designed to process this much threat information, this consistently, for this long. And in the AEC industry, there's another layer. Construction professionals already work in environments that require constant vigilance: anticipating problems managing risk staying ahead of deadlines catching mistakes before they happen In many ways, the industry rewards people for staying mentally "on." So when nonstop global uncertainty gets layered on top of an already high-pressure profession, the cumulative stress load becomes significant. In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff Visnic and Rachelle Ray explore the connection between fear, media consumption, chronic stress, and burnout. Together, they unpack why fear-based information captures our attention so effectively, what's happening in the brain and nervous system when we stay in a constant state of alert, and how the nonstop cycle of headlines, notifications, uncertainty, and professional pressure can quietly increase emotional exhaustion. You'll hear: Why the brain is naturally wired toward threat detection How media and digital platforms capitalize on fear and attention Why AEC professionals may feel this more intensely than other industries The connection between chronic nervous system activation and burnout Why people often feel exhausted even when nothing is "wrong" in their immediate life Practical ways to stay informed without staying overwhelmed This episode is thoughtful, practical, and deeply relevant to the world we're living in right now. If you've been feeling emotionally heavy, mentally exhausted, or like your nervous system never fully settles, this conversation may help you understand why. S4Ep4 - Burnout Banter - The Hidden Cost of Change (No One is Talking About This)
Change in the construction industry is an interesting paradox. On one hand, it's constant. New tools. New technologies. New expectations. On the other hand, it's an industry that has historically taken time to adapt. There's a familiarity in "this is how we've always done it." A reliance on proven processes. A natural resistance to shifting something that already works. So what happens when those two realities collide? When the pace of change starts to accelerate… but the systems and people experiencing it aren't built to absorb it that quickly? That's where stress begins to build. In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff Visnic and Rachelle Ray are joined by Heather Polivka, founder of Awesome People Leaders, to explore the impact of change on stress and burnout in the AEC industry. Together, they unpack why change can feel so disruptive, what's really happening beneath the surface when people struggle to adapt, and how the accumulation of change can quietly lead to burnout. You'll hear: Why resistance to change is often misunderstood What leaders tend to underestimate when introducing change How the pace of change increases cognitive and emotional load The connection between unprocessed change, stress, and burnout What individuals and leaders can do to navigate change more effectively This conversation is both practical and honest. Whether you're leading change, navigating it, or simply trying to keep up with it, this episode will help you better understand what's happening and how to move through it in a more sustainable way. Join us monthly on Burnout Banter as we showcase and share the stories and insights of marketing professionals and technical teams in the construction industry. AECTechCon-Versations_The Way We Work
The architecture, engineering, and construction industry has built highly capable organizations designed to deliver complex projects with precision and consistency. At the same time, many professionals—and leaders—are experiencing increasing pressure in how that work gets done. Tight timelines. Growing coordination demands. Layered responsibilities across teams and disciplines. In many cases, that pressure is accepted as part of the job. But when you look more closely, it doesn't just sit with individuals—it moves through the systems organizations rely on. It shows up in how teams communicate, how decisions are made, and how work flows across disciplines and firms. This episode explores that reality. Rather than focusing on solutions or alternative structures, the conversation centers on what it feels like to operate inside AEC organizations today, and what leaders are beginning to notice about how those systems are functioning under increasing complexity. AECTechCon-Versations: Old Tools, New Tech - What We're Rediscovering About Craft, Technology and the Way We Build (A Burnout Banter Production)
The construction industry continues to push forward with new tools, new technologies, and new ways of working. But at the same time, some of the most compelling work happening today doesn't feel entirely new. It reflects a renewed interest in traditional materials, time-tested methods, and a deeper connection to craft. In this episode of AECTechCon-versations, Jeff Visnic is joined by Dan Marty and Matt McMahon of Snøhetta to explore that intersection. Rather than focusing on a specific project, this conversation takes a broader view of how the industry is beginning to integrate modern technology with traditional ways of building—and what that might mean for the future of design and construction. Together, they discuss: • Why technology is accelerating, but the conversation often focuses only on what's new • How decades of optimization for efficiency, scale, and predictability have shaped the industry • The growing interest in material honesty, craft, and human connection to the work • How many of today's innovations are rooted in ideas and methods that have existed for generations This episode creates space to explore a deeper question: Are we simply innovating… or are we rediscovering what has always worked—now supported by modern tools? S4Ep3 - Burnout Banter - The Multitasking Myth: Why Doing More is Draining You Faster
Multitasking has become the default way of working in architecture, engineering, and construction. Emails during meetings. Messages during focused work. Constant switching between drawings, deadlines, and conversations. It feels productive. It even feels necessary. But what most people don't realize is this: Multitasking isn't making you more effective. It's training your brain to stay in a constant state of fragmentation. In this episode, we break down the science behind multitasking and why it doesn't work the way we think it does. We explore what's actually happening in your brain when you switch between tasks, how it increases cognitive load and stress, and why it can quietly accelerate the path to burnout. Drawing on research from cognitive science and workplace psychology, we'll unpack: Why the brain doesn't truly multitask and what "task switching" actually costs you How constant switching increases mental fatigue and reduces performance The role of dopamine and why we get hooked on distraction How multitasking keeps your nervous system in a low-level stress state Why this pattern leads to feeling behind, even when you're working all day. This episode is both practical and eye-opening. If you've ever ended the day feeling exhausted but unsure what you actually accomplished, this conversation will help you understand why and what you can start doing differently. AECTechCon-Versations_Why Technology Isn't the Hard Part (A Burnout Banter Production)
The construction industry isn't short on innovation. What it often struggles with is adoption. New tools are introduced. Platforms promise efficiency. Processes evolve. And yet, many organizations quietly fall back on familiar ways of working. Why? In this episode of AEC TechCon-versations, Jeff Visnic sits down with Alex Ayers and Matthew Halveland, organizers of this years AEC TechCon, to explore the often-overlooked human side of technological change in the construction industry. Together, they discuss why adoption can feel harder than expected, how pressure and responsibility shape responses to change, and why many professionals experience these challenges in isolation—even though others are navigating the same things. The conversation also explores how connection and shared learning—through conferences, user groups, and peer networks—can help reduce stress, normalize challenges, and make learning feel like relief rather than another obligation. If you've ever wondered why technology that makes sense on paper can still struggle to gain traction in practice, this conversation will resonate. This discussion also sets the stage for Jeff's keynote at AEC TechCon: "The Stress of Change: Building Human Resilience in Times of Technological Change." AEC TechCon brings together contractors, technology leaders, and innovators from across the construction industry to explore how technology and people work together to shape the future of construction. S4Ep1 - Burnout Banter - This Isn't Sustainable: How to Talk to Your Boss About Burnout
Even the most capable AEC professionals hit a breaking point — but saying, "I'm burned out" to your boss can feel like a career risk. In this episode, we're exploring how to have that conversation before burnout wrecks your motivation, productivity, or relationships at work. Drawing from Harvard Business Review's guide on burnout conversations, we'll unpack what to say, how to say it, and why you don't have to choose between protecting your well-being and protecting your reputation. You'll learn: What makes this conversation so hard (especially in hierarchical, deadline-driven teams) How do you prepare? A simple 3-step prep framework: Name. Claim. Ask. How to tailor the conversation to your boss's communication style What to do if the response is dismissive — or worse, performative This episode is equal parts practical and honest. S3Ep9 - Burnout Banter - The Fall Frenzy: When Urgency Becomes the Default
As Q4 ramps up, everything suddenly feels urgent. Deadlines move closer. Teams scramble to "finish strong." And somewhere along the way, urgency becomes the default operating mode—whether it's necessary or not. In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff and Rachelle explore the seasonal pressure that hits many AEC professionals in the fall. The push to hit year-end metrics, wrap up key initiatives, and juggle increasingly complex schedules can leave teams running on fumes before the holidays even start. We'll unpack the difference between true urgency and manufactured urgency, why leaders often (accidentally) escalate pressure, and how to spot when you're caught in a frenzy that's doing more harm than good. Most importantly, we'll share strategies to slow the spin, prioritize what matters, and lead without panic. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who feels like the calendar flipped to October and suddenly everything became a fire drill. S3Ep8 - Burnout Banter - You Don't Need Time Management. You Need Boundaries
Even the most experienced professionals in the AEC industry—people who manage complex projects and navigate high-stakes deadlines—still struggle to hold their boundaries. It's not a time management issue. It's a culture, communication, and identity issue. In this episode, Jeff and Rachelle explore why boundaries feel so elusive, even for high performers. They dig into how people-pleasing, perfectionism, and unspoken team norms wear down even the clearest intentions. From vague client expectations to the "hero" mentality of being the one who always steps in, AEC professionals are often rewarded for boundary-breaking behavior—and punished (implicitly or explicitly) for pushing back. You'll hear real-world examples, practical communication scripts, and a mini coaching framework to help redefine boundaries not as limitations—but as strategies for aligned leadership and long-term sustainability. Whether you're burned out from always being "the fixer," or just need a better way to protect your time and energy, this episode will help you reflect, reset, and reinforce what matters most. S3Ep7 - Burnout Banter - Out of Office, Still on Edge: Why Vacation Isn't Fixing Your Burnout
We assume vacation is the antidote to burnout—but for many AEC professionals, it's just a brief escape before diving back into chaos. In this episode, Jeff and Rachelle unpack why we're getting vacation wrong and how to shift from escape mode to recharge mode. They explore the myth of the summer slowdown, the false belief that vacation is the ultimate fix, and how poor boundaries and internal pressure prevent true rest. The conversation invites leaders and professionals to look at how they prepare for, experience, and return from time off—and what that says about the rest of their work life. You'll hear honest reflections, real-world examples, and practical strategies for using vacation as part of a sustainable energy management plan—not just a temporary relief valve. If you've ever returned from vacation and immediately felt behind, guilty, or like nothing's changed... this one's for you. S3Ep6 - Burnout Banter - Move Something: The Burnout Cure That Has Nothing to Do with Hustle
In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff and Rachelle explore one of the most underused tools in the burnout recovery toolkit: movement. Most people immediately think of exercise when they hear "get active," but physical activity is only one piece of the puzzle. Drawing from both research and lived experience, Jeff and Rachelle break down five types of activity—physical, creative, social, organizational, and reflective—that help shake off the fog of burnout and get people moving again. They dive into why burnout thrives in stillness and how intentional movement, in any form, can help restore momentum, confidence, and emotional regulation. This episode is for anyone who feels stuck, exhausted, or overwhelmed—and especially for those who say, "I know I should exercise, but I just can't right now." The good news: You don't have to run a marathon to move forward. You just have to move something. S3Ep5 - Burnout Banter - Clocked In, Burned Out: Rethinking the 40-Hour Work Week
In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff and Rachelle take a hard look at one of the most ingrained norms in modern work culture: the 40-hour workweek. From its gritty roots in the Industrial Revolution to its popularization by Henry Ford and eventual legalization in 1938, they trace the surprising history of how the "9 to 5" came to be—and why it's no longer working for so many. Despite its original purpose to protect workers, the 40-hour standard is often exceeded, especially in the AEC industry, where tight deadlines and site-based work demand more than what's on paper. Jeff and Rachelle examine whether the structure still serves today's workforce or has become an outdated relic, exposing the productivity myths and mental health trade-offs hidden behind those extra hours. You'll hear about real-world alternatives—from Iceland's reduced workweek pilot to flexible and compressed schedules—and why more companies should consider rethinking time, not just tasks. If you've ever asked yourself, "Why am I still working this much?" this episode offers both historical insight and a hopeful path forward. You'll hear surprising stats on hybrid work, gender disparities, loneliness, and the real productivity cost of burnout. S3Ep3 - Burnout Banter - What Type of Introvert Are You - And Is It Burning You Out?
In this episode of Burnout Banter, Jeff and Rachelle explore how introversion, while often misunderstood, can be a surprising contributor to burnout. Using the HuffPost article, "There Are 4 Types Of Introverts — Which One Are You?", as a launch point, they break down the four main types—social, thinking, anxious, and restrained—and examine how each may be vulnerable to specific patterns of burnout. They also challenge the common narrative that being an introvert is a barrier to connection, growth, or leadership. Many people use the label "introvert" as an excuse to avoid necessary social or professional interactions, which can actually increase stress, create isolation, and amplify burnout. This episode offers a fresh perspective on how honoring your introverted nature doesn't mean hiding from the world—it means learning how to engage with it in ways that support your energy and wellbeing. This constant juggling act can lead to a sense of overwhelm, as deadlines loom large and commitments pile up, leaving little room for rest and relaxation. As the pressure mounts and we feel like we are letting others down, our resilience is eroded and our energy reserves are sapped. Over time, this relentless pace can take a toll on both our mental and physical well-being, paving the way for burnout to take hold. The demands that are placed on us exceed our capacity to cope with them. Poor time management can exacerbate this imbalance, leaving individuals feeling chronically depleted and disillusioned. Without intervention, burnout can have serious impacts on our job performance, our relationships, and our overall quality of life. Addressing the root cause of poor time management is crucial for mitigating the risk of burnout and fostering a healthier, more sustainable approach to work and life. S2Ep2 - Burnout Banter - Storytelling and Burnout
Leadership is more than just directing tasks; it's about inspiring, motivating, and connecting with people on a deeper level. This is where the art of storytelling becomes a critical skill for leaders. Good storytelling engages, inspires, and communicates complex ideas in a relatable way. Leaders who can craft and share compelling stories about an organization's vision, values, and journey create a narrative that resonates with team members. These stories humanize leaders, building trust and fostering a sense of connection. Moreover, storytelling is an effective vehicle for transmitting culture, facilitating learning, and navigating challenges. Leaders who master the art of storytelling not only convey information but also shape a compelling narrative that guides, motivates and unites their teams toward shared goals. While the stories we tell others can inspire, the stories we tell ourselves, often referred to as our internal narratives or self-talk, can also either inspire us or significantly impact our well-being, including increasing our susceptibility to burnout. Episode 7 - Burnout Banter - Am I Really Burned Out?
In 1974, psychologist Herbert Freudenberger became the first person to coin 'burnout' in a medical journal, after studying the lasting impacts of excessive stress and workplace demands on individuals, resulting in symptoms like depression and anxiety. For a long time, burnout was a blurry cultural concept that defied attempts to create a specific consensus definition that scientists could agree on. In fact, there have been hundreds of studies conducted on the subject in an attempt to define it. In May 2019, the World Health Organization defined it and stated that burnout should be considered a disease in the newest version of the International Classification of Diseases. They define burnout as a "syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed". They also point out that while it relates to work, it shouldn't be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life. According to the WHO, Burnout is caused by three factors: Feelings of Energy Depletion or Exhaustion Increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and reduced professional efficacy Burnout has become a bigger problem than ever due to employees working more and feeling like they aren't being fairly compensated. It has a big impact on employee retention and also prevents professional success. If it sounds serious, it is. You might be asking yourself, am I burned out? or, What do I do if I am? Let's find out! Episode 6 - Burnout Banter - You Can't Say That! Can You?
If you've ever struggled to say "no" - you aren't alone. Saying no can be challenging because of social and cultural conditioning that values compliance, agreeability, and a desire to please others. Fear of rejection, disapproval, or conflict can also play a role. Additionally, saying yes to requests can give a sense of validation or importance, while declining can feel like a loss of opportunity or control. It takes practice to overcome these obstacles and feel comfortable saying no - but it also helps to know the right way to say no. In this episode, we're joined by Jen McGovern, CPSM. Jen is a senior regional marketing manager for VHB, a 1,800-person engineering, planning, environmental, and technology consulting firm. With a background as an editor, Jen fell into the A/E/C industry in 2012 and found a passion for proposals and infrastructure projects. A prolific author and presenter, Jen is a past president of SMPS Washington, DC, and was named the 2022 SMPS Chapter President of the Year. She also serves on SMPS's national Editorial Committee and Certification Committee. She achieved her Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) credential in 2015. Jen is going to help us all learn how to say one of the most difficult words - "no". Episode 4 - Burnout Banter - Workplace Dynamics
There's no single stressor that causes burnout. There are, of course, several commonly recognized causes of burnout. In the workplace, these include a lack of control, unclear job expectations, workplace dynamics, and chaotic activity. Ultimately, many of these chronic stressors are initiated by, or end up damaging, our professional relationships. Dysfunctional workplace dynamics put undue stress on us and our colleagues, which often results in burnout. In this episode, we are joined by special guest Andrew Pelloso. Andrew is an Environmental Consultant/Regulatory Specialist with 29 years of experience navigating complex permitting and regulatory challenges in both the public and private sectors, focusing on environmental requirements at the local, state, and federal levels. Together, we're going to explore these chaotic workplace dynamics. Specifically, we're going to look at how technical staff, or SMEs, and proposal professionals are often at odds, how they can better work together, and how other groups can emulate good habits for positive workplace dynamics. Episode 3 - Burnout Banter - What do you Value?
Core values inform our thoughts, decisions, and actions and help us align our career or life path to what's important to us (yes, to us). They remind us - and others - who we truly are. In a 2022 Article, Sarah Kirstenson, an Author for the websites, Happier Human and Developing Good Habits, did a great job defining five reasons why personal core values are important: They help us do an inner evaluation of ourselves. They aid us in making decisions. They keep us motivated in the face of adversity. They help us set healthy boundaries for ourselves and those around us. They give us inner peace that we are making the best decisions. Without being aware of our core values, we have no direction, no plan, or purpose for what we do or how we operate. Knowing our core values can change how we live our life. They can help us show up as our authentic selves more often and help us enjoy a greater sense of purpose. By defining and acting on our values, we can be more deliberate in planning the path our career and life will follow. In this episode, we talk about the connection between core values, how you can figure yours out, and how they can help us prevent getting to the point where we are burned out. Episode 2 - Burnout Banter - Building Your Community
In researching the book, The Happiness Track in 2017, the authors found that 50% of people reported being burnt out. More importantly, they found that there is a significant correlation between feeling lonely and work exhaustion. The more exhausted we are, the lonelier we feel. Loneliness and isolation can have serious effects on individuals, impacting both psychological and physical health. In fact, research by Sarah Pressman of UC Irvine shows that while drinking reduces longevity by 30%, and smoking reduces it by 50%, loneliness can actually reduce our longevity by an astonishing 70%. On the flip side of this, research from Carnegie Mellon University shows that strong social networks are associated with stronger immune systems and lower rates of anxiety and depression. In this episode, we talk about the connection between burnout and isolation as well as the importance of building a community to both overcome and prevent burnout. Episode 1 - Burnout Banter - Your Definition of Success
In a 2009 blog post that by 2012 had been read by eight million people, Bronnie Ware, a palliative care specialist, identified the Top Five Regrets of people who were dying based on her experience with them at the end of their life. The top five regrets were: I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. I wish I hadn't worked so hard. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. I wish that I had let myself be happier. How do so many of us reach the end of our life filled with so much regret? The cause is much simpler than you might think - it is because we pursue success as defined by others. When we define success for ourselves, it becomes easier to focus on where we are going, what matters the most in our lives and align our decisions with the pursuit of our definition.
